Ignite is the Portland Burning Man weekly. Ignite is open to all people. The basic idea is that those of us organizing Ignite will provide music. The art, the performances, the fire, and whatever your mind conceives is up to you. Please contact us if you have an idea of something you would like to do.
This week we are very excited to welcome Bryan Zentz(intec, soma, primate, disruptor) and The Perfect Cyn (spandecks syndicate/ www.sexyrobotmusic.com) .
Bryan Zentz (aka Barada, Faculty X, Bryan Never) is known as The Professor amongst the Intec posse, a thoughtful individual who takes an intelligent approach to his music. A skilled musician who takes pride in writing rather than sampling the vast majority of his music he leaves many others behind with the breadth of his versatility whether it's techno, house, electro, ambient or industrial.
Bryan's first release on Intec was the Skufftones 1.0 EP which included the stunning "Algebra", a real techno disco workout that blew up for a variety of DJ's such as Danny Tenaglia, Derrick May and Slam. His current release "Watch The Sun" is destined for greater things as he blends Latino piano with slap bass, showing why he's a true original in the techno scene.
Taken in by hip-hop, punk, graffiti, design, and different forms of electronic music, this Virginian has lived a creative youth. From playing in bands and being surrounded by a strong musical family (his father still performs), his ears are tuned when it comes to hearing an original sound. From an early love with hip-hop and house music, he found other roots of electronic music as influence. Devo, Kraftwerk, Inner City, Cabaret Voltaire, Skinny Puppy, Eric B & Rakim, Basic Channel, Rob Hood, and Jeff Mills - they've all held Bryan's ears closely at one time or another.
Bryan first made his name in electronic music as Barada (the name was taken from a Star Wars character) on Richie Hawtin and John Acquaviva's legendary Definitive label with now classic releases such as "Medicine Drum" and "Glue". After a string of singles on labels like EXperimental, Bush and Clashbackk among others, the time came for a full length Barada album "Strategies for a Deeper Design" released through Definitive and Virgin Canada. And it was that rare thing, a house album that told a story.
Bryan is one of the few 'performing' artists of the house/techno genre and boasts one the meanest live sets in dance music that has rocked The End in London, Bugged Out! in Manchester, Florida135 in Barcelona, Twilo in NYC and The Arches in Glasgow.
Somewhat of a studio workaholic his unrelenting output has lead to the release of high quality gems on labels such as Zozan Music, Primate, Tronic, Electrix and Superbra to name a few.
I, The perfect cyn, am a music freak, perfectionist, & lover of dirty, twitchy dance music. As a dj i've been instigating trouble on dancefloors and in clubs since 2001. With a reputation for bringing uncompromisingly cutting edge music to the people, my Spandecks Syndicate partner Derek Fisher and I have avoided being pigeonholed into any one genre, dubbing our own style of "sexy robot music." This mission has brought us to share the stage with the likes of Richie Hawtin, Ellen Allien, Matthew Dear, T. Raumschmiere, Damian Lazarus, Pheek, Someone Else, Bryan Zentz, Lowfish, and Smash TV, as well as a slew of regional superstars all over the Pacific Northwest.
Over the past 5 years the Spandecks experience has evolved significantly from where it began. We graduated from crashing house parties to hosting small club events in 2002 at the Portlands unlikely M bar. Right across the street at Bastas Trattoria, Spandecks hosted one of Portlands longest running Thursday night weeklies for over two years (starting back up on Wednesdays on 5/3!!). We've been resident DJs for almost three years at Saucebox, a Portland institution. Picking up where Seattle's Robo.Trash left off in '03, we helped continue the energy by helping create the now defunct Seattle electroclash bi-monthly, Shameless. We've hosted regular club nights at Holocene since 04, most recently with Matthew Dear as Audion April of 06. In July 05, with help of longtime friend Kill Jill, we embarked on Phonique - a Spandecks Syndicate venture at the intimate Noir Lounge the second Friday each month, including guests such as Lowfish, Kris Moon, Jerry Abstract, Bryan Zentz, Someone Else, Pheek, and the Famous Players. And due to our rediculously infectious enthusiasm about music, Spandecks events continually gain momentum to present day, in our weekly internet radio program Robot Revolutions on Sobroken.com internet radio every Monday at 8pm PST, and summer outdoor events with our pals Bassland Collective, as well as the Pan-Zen crew at Autonomous Mutant Festival.
Further 2006 plans include bringing Matt Tolfrey (www.leftroom.com) to perform for the Phonique 1year party in July, tenative gig dates for D&C in Scotland this summer, plus big plans for Decibel Festival in Seattle, and a baby vinyl label perhaps to be born. Please check out our website, www.sexyrobotmusic.com, hosting several mixes including cyn's gammaKon and makeAsound both available on the music page. The website will always have our upcoming events in detail. Wake up & smell the party, people - Spandecks has your dancin' ass covered!
Pala is located at 105 NW 3rd Ave in Downtown Portland. Pala is a smoke free lounge serving absolutely delicious food and spine tingling beverages. There is no cover on Wednesday's. Please bring your ID as this is a 21+ affair.
