Ignite is the Portland Burning Man weekly. Ignite is open to all people. The basic idea is that those of us organizing Ignite will provide music. The art, the performances, the fire, and whatever your mind conceives is up to you. Please contact us if you have an idea of something you would like to do.
This week we welcome Sappho and Lil Roj.
Sappho was born in the Nerdery. Raised on a steady diet of seventies prog rock and uselessfacts pertaining to music, she quickly became a lover, listener and a player. Sappho attended her first rave in 1990 where she saw Deee-Lite perform and officially fell in love with what we all now know as the dance party. Sappho partied her little candy-ravin' ass off for the next ten years till she got crappy turntables and a shitty mixer of her own in 2000. She spent a very long time thinking she was the worst DJ ever. But...she is now widely known and loved throughout the Pacific Northwest for her unusual ability to mix practically any and all styles of music (much like a Cuisaneart)!!! From clickhop to hiphop to cheezy pop to straight up T E C H N O, Sappho gets a dance party going and keeps it going till everyone is all sweaty. So, she's pretty happy with that action and would love it if you were a part of it in some way.
When speaking with and watching Lil Roj you can see the sheer passion for the music that this man possesses. Roj is originally from a small town in south Louisiana where he got his start mixing in 1992. In the mid-nineties he gained popularity and played clubs and large events all over Louisiana. He has been fortunate enough to share the stage with many great performers such as Union Jack, Deep Sky, Frankie Bones, Monk, Bassbin Twins, Scott Henry, Christopher Lawrence, Vicious Vic, Ani, Carlos, Deiselboy, as well as many others. In contrast to Roj's bright smile are his dark and gritty beats. Dabbling a bit in breaks and bit in techno Roj looks forward to a long future here in Portland. Keep your eyes on this rising dj.
