Paradolia is defined as the human ability to creatively perceive coherent images in randomness. This is an unusual word by anyone's standard but then Alex Menzies (aka Mr Smoke) is an artist very far from the usual. A Rorschach test this is not, more a sonic experiment that explores the parameters of Alex Smokefs potent psyche.
Alex remarks on its significance "I guess the album is the pattern and the tracks the randomness as I didn't have a plan to tie everything together. I also think it describes really well the appeal of music that at first sounds random but makes sense as a whole."
It is almost twelve months since Soma unleashed eIncommunicadof, Smokefs masterful debut. Lauded by critics upon its release in March 2005 it portrayed his instinctive maturity in constructing emotional, deep grooves with intricate production techniques. eIncommunicadof enveloped a myriad of influences including dub, electro, grime and minimal techno. One of the album highlights, eDonft See The Pointf demonstrated his desire to incorporate his own vocals in innovative ways, while voicing his frustrations at the current political climate. This pivotal release augmented the fact that his music was not confined to the dancefloor and could not be pigeonholed by genre.
With 'Paradolia' he has taken this blueprint and pushed the boundaries for a composition that is swollen with ingenuity and experimentation. The development of his unique sound is clear to hear, crafting a beguiling symmetry of melancholy and melody. The result is an a listening experience that is more cohesive and inspirational than his debut outing.
Like its predecessor, Alex has once again interpreted styles of music that make an impact on him. With 'Paradolia' he has gone a step further, welding disparate genre's into mindbending opusfs. 2005 has been the year which has witnessed this young producer's rapid ascent through the ranks of the techno elite. Since the release of 'Incommunicado' he has been booked to play the clubs and festivals of the UK, Europe and beyond.
His coveted releases on Berlin label Vakant have cemented his club credentials and found their way into boxes and laptops of innovative DJ's everywhere. Not content with a slew of killer twelves, Alex Smoke remixes have constantly been in demand, recently renovating Mylo, Alex Under and Vector Lovers. 2006 is already shaping up to be another monumental one for Alex Smoke with the release of 'Paradolia' and subsequent UK and European live tour.
Alex Smoke will be debuting his live set in Japan at Unit, Tokyo on the 5 May 2006.

UK-based minimal techno / house producer Alex Smoke (real name Alex Menzies) unleashed one of last years minimal techno delights with his debut Incommunicado album on Soma, which received widespread acclaim and was held by many to be one of the strongest British techno records in recent years. Combining a highly emotive approach with intricate production in manner similar to labelmate Vector Lovers sweeping constructions, Incommunicado showed Menzies fusing together an extremely wide range of influences spanning from John Carpenter / Eno-esque ambient electronics right through Matthew Johnson-style minimal techno rhythms, and focussing on creating a coherent listening experience, rather than worrying about genre conventions. A scant year on from Incommunicados release, this follow-up Paradolia (a title which refers to the human brains creative ability to perceive coherent images in random patterns such as clouds) arrives swiftly on the heels of a string of 12 releases for Berlins Vakant label, and shows Menzies taking his lush fusion of emotional immediacy and meticulous production to an arguably even more potent level.
After an opening Paradolia Intro that certainly sets up epic atmosphere, with brooding cello orchestration and the sampled rush of what sounds like flowing water slowly building beneath cycling synth drones, Persona snaps things straight down into shimmering minimal techno rhythms, the delicate sound of looped chiming tones nicely counterpointed by sharp-focus beat programming, electro-influenced synth bass patterns and slightly distorted snares, calling to mind some of Matthew Audion Dears recent work for the Ghostly International label. Never Want To See You Again represents a particular highlight moment, with Menzies layering his own processed vocals over a smooth, undulating backdrop of brooding synth orchestration, minimal clicking rhythms and soft bleeping tones in a track that particularly calls to mind some of Swayzaks more icily melancholic explorations, before album centrepiece Prima Materia shows the classically-trained producer combining swelling cinematic cello orchestration and brooding bass drones with a clicking pulse of minimal house rhythms, resulting in one of this records most enveloping, widescreen moments.
After this voyage out into contemplative atmospherics, Snider kicks things straight back towards stripped-down Detroit techno rhythms, zapping laser-gun style stabs, rolling xylophone-esque tones spinning delicately back and forth as subtle electro basslines power their way beneath and the beats gradually pick up a sharp-focus jacking kick to them that offsets the other dreamier textures, while We Like It Insipid takes things into moodily atmospheric downbeat electro, skeletal cracking beats tracing a jagged path beneath fuzzed-out overdriven analogue synths, fluttering electronic noises and what almost sounds like digitally-processed guitar feedback, in one of this albums most emotionally poignant moments. Anima reintroduces Menzies heavily-processed vocals over a sinister backdrop of distorted electro rhythms, eerie delayed-out piano notes and dark, lurking sub-bass tones, his delayed-out delivery suggesting Peter Gabriel at points as dramatic cello orchestration rises up in the mix, before Left Drift takes things to a close, fluttering knife-sharp minimal techno rhythms pushing against what sounds like sampled flamenco guitar strokes and rich string pads, as digitally-treated harmonic tones trace their way back and forth.
An excellent second album from Alex Smoke that shows this hotly-tipped young UK producer taking the spell-binding fusion of orchestral melancholy and meticulous minimal techno programming he fashioned on Incommunicado to arguably even more potent levels. Fans of intricate techno with a deeply emotive pulse will be pleased indeed fans of the likes of Matthew Dear and Vector Lovers glacial elegance should most definitely give Paradolia serious investigation.

n 1954, some Canadians believed to have seen the Devil in the Queens hair on a piece of their currency. In 1996, an image of the Virgin Mary appeared in the window of an office building in Clearwater, Florida. The Rorschach Test, the face on Mars, or the faces and shapes one can sometimes see in the clouds theyre all examples of paradolia: the tendency to recognize familiar images where there are none. In conjunction with his previous album, Incommunicado, the name given to Alex Smokes current effort seems to make sense. At least in title, both are dealing with absence and the perception of that absence. And from there, its not much of a jump to begin considering things like spectrality and spatial dynamics, which makes even more sense when considering the approach taken by Smoke on his full lengths versus his more dance friendly 12seven more so than Incommunicado, this album seems at times to flirt with the idea of completely leaving the disco, but stays to destroy it.
Although it generally seems like a good idea to avoid reifying the opposition between full lengths and other kinds of releases, in the same sense that one might hesitate to privilege the novel over a poem, artists like Smoke make it difficult to avoid such comparisons. With shorter releases that seem ready for any DJ willing to take things in the direction of a pessimistic Superpitcher, like late last years Vakant 12s Schwingnut and Schminimal, Smoke seems to be giving credibility to terms like micro-goth. However, an album like Paradolia seems to place an even greater value on mood over movement and finds a way to reappropriate, in both a less obviously playful and more melancholy approach, the often twee glitchmatics of an artist like Keiran Hebden.
Meany is the first single, and a smart one. A timely plip-plop buzzes and fizzles in all the right places, it eventually breaks into a jumpy melody that would translate into a series of staccato hammer-ons had it been played on a guitar, but instead this synth line flirts with a slightly overdriven bass that pulses along at a late night pace before the two inevitably converge. The most obvious pick would be Snider. As a track that could be considered a follow-up to Smokes Titti, it deserves the closest comparison to Hebden, albeit from the opposite end of the emotional spectrum; both chimes and moody post-rave synths top a schaffel beat. Destined to garner comparisons to Dont See the Point, Never Want to See You Again is the closest thing to a concession on this album. However, while presenting Smokes distinct vocals, the piece completely avoids recreating any previous tricks. If anything, it proves that talent extends even beyond a mastery of moody dance and ethereal melancholic pieces into a realm that is as close as minimal will ever get to pop music.
While it should probably be no shock that Alex Smoke has a background in classical music, tracks on this album like Prima Materia, We Like it Insipid, and Left Drift make it almost obvious. From the epic strings and dub of Prima Materia, to half-speed polyphonic melody juggling on We Like it Insipid, Smoke clearly demonstrates his ability to create truly beautiful arrangements. Left Drift, on the other hand, trades in post-apocalyptic imagery as Smoke picks up where Throbbing Gristle and Front 242 have left off. From disorientation to hope, this track seems to be the aftermath that rebuilds itself. First slowly, and then more rapidly, it takes pieces of what is left and begins to reassemble. What is reproduced is something beautiful toward which groups like Eluvium or M83 can only aspire.
The fact that those artists cant jump as easily as Smoke does between mood and movement, or combine the two just as effortlessly, are part of what place him above so many others. But, then again, with music, there is always the chance that we are seeing something when there is nothing, lost in sound.
