I work at a clinic at one of the major portland hospitals, and I am looking for one full time and one part time person to staff our front desk. The job is HARD - you need a HS degree or GED and at least 2-3 years of office/receptionist experience, in the health industry is best. Bachelor's degree preferred.

You'd be working with cancer patients, so the ability to develop a good relationship while not getting too attached is key.

This is NOT an entry level position for somebody to get into a desk job - I am looking for upbeat, competent, detail-oriented individuals with lots of good experience. The pay starts around $14/hr.

I'm posting here as a last resort, you would not BELIEVE how hard it is to find good people for these jobs. Anybody know anybody?

You have to pass a drug test.

PM me for more info!

Hey! We're looking to hire a front desk person in my clinic too. Same requirements. Patients are children so you gotta like them. BUT the job isn't going to be posted until November.

To Nomad...really, Bryan? WTH

You have to pass a drug test. Is $14 dollars an hour a lot in Portland money?!?

Seems like most basic medical reception jobs in the Seattle area start at $17/18 an hour plus benefits, and do not require things like drug tests, the stress of dealing with terminally ill folks on a personal basis, or having an advanced college education. Hell - a lot of nurses and medical assisiants just have Associates degrees!

Check Craigslist and see what the basic rate for receptionists is, and tack on a few extra bucks per hour if you want one with a college education. Perhaps if potential job applicants knew they would be compensated fairly, they would be more interested in this grueling and stressful job position.

cost of living is way higher up there......one of the things holding me back from making the final decision to move up when im done with school....

Yeah - $14 an hour is a good "entry-level" wage for Portland. You'd be part of a union however, so you get great benefits like paid health insurance and guarenteed pay raises.

(And yes Ben - I had the slim hope that somebody on here has a sibling or something that is wanting to be in healthcare)

Thus making the assumption that anybody on the board wouldn't be a good fit for the job... But hopefully they have an uncorrupted sibling?

Its a good start if you don't have any college education, the average rent for a room in an apartment in PDX is $350, meaning for a 2 bedroom, you pay $700. The average rent for a room in a house is $425, so yea you can live off $14 an hour. plus theres no sales tax on anything, so its pretty easy. Its not spectacular either. You would be suprised at how many people are ok with making much less then that though.

The free (good) health insurance makes up for the possibly relatively low starting pay as well. You also get a retirement account, dental, and life insurance paid for.

The basic pay they post on craigslist is never what they pay. I had 4 years medial reception and billing experience with a childrens clinic and orthopedic surgeons office and the most I got offered when applying was $11 or so an hour. Unless you work for the public health and then they start you around $17 an hour but those are hard to get.

Which is pretty normal for a receptionist in Portland I think, entry level at least. Sucks, but everything else is usually cheaper down here too.

I've had doctors with tattoo's.

Last time I checked unless it was on your neck or hand you can cover it up with a long sleaved shirt or lab coat.

It really doesn't matter in 2006.

I told my mom about the openings at your clinic and she declined. She doesn't want to deal with humans. Too stressful.

That's what I thought too but she would rather work with machines...which is what she is doing right now. She's floor supervisor at Warn industry. They make the truck accessories like the grills and the tow lines, etc.
