Everyone who has been walking around downtown, has seen the glass canopy covored staircases that seemingly decend into boarded up oblivion. But has anyone ever actually seen what is below the wood?

yes, it's where the cool people hang out, which is why you've never been down there!

They might be connected to the Shanghai Tunnels. If you're unfamiliar with those do search on Portland Shanghai Tunnels. There are literally miles of them underneath the west side of the city. Captains used to pay bartenders to drug guys and then they'd use the tunnels to smuggle them on to boats in the river. Portland used to be one of the most dangerous cities on the West Coast.

It's a subway tunnel. If you're ever down by the onramp for the rossisland bridge by the seven eleven downtown... you'll notice there is another stair case leading down there that goes to the subway system as well.

It's not part of the shanghai tunnels, although it is connect rumor has it.

Pshhh, Cool people hang out under the bridge...

Hmm.Theres a one near the Pearl district too. And these pop out of streets, like any normal Subway station entrance would... But perhaps they really are just elaborate entrances to the Shanghai tunnels..

according "portland monthly" magazine in their "portland 150th anniv. issue," the glass covered one on 9th and alder is actually a now defunct public bathroom.. i think the metal one across from pioneer courthouse square might be to the old subway tunnels..

like Roddimus said, Portland has never had a subway system, just the Shanghai Tunnels and underground restrooms.

The underground entry ways are to the old public restrooms, which was the popular public restroom style at the time.

Seattle had a few restrooms identical to those in Portland. Seattle's were boarded up after the second World War.

History Link article on Seattle's public, underground restrooms. (http://www.historylink.org/essays/output.cfm?file_id=2950)

If you want really good underground stuff, go check out the abonded warehouses I mentioned before. They're behind the UOP in Nopo, between the university and the river. Lots of bad ass graffiti down there too...

Haha. So much for urban infiltration. I guess I will just have to go check out the old warehouses.

Dooood...We just moved to Nopo and cruised down to the end of our road in search of what was around because we don't know crap about North Portland. We saw this little road that leads to the waterfront and some kickass old warehouses that look like they've been burned.
We cruised around there for an hour and plan to go back. Some awesome art and stuffs!
But these have to be the same ones you're talking about since we had to go through the University to get there.
Awesome.

Yep that is them. It's a hot spot now though. A homeless kid died there last summer and now it's super watched...

oh yeah... it's also covered with creosote... hence it's a no trespassing zone. "Somebody" spray painted over the no tresspass sign. Not that it matters. People god own there all the time.

Portland is older than Seattle, thus has more history and culture than Seattle will ever have.

What good is that history if Portland's residents do not care enough to educate themselves about it?

Do not assume that, based off a few people that think Portland had a subway at one point, that knowledge of Portlands history by its residents is null and void.
