Heavy rains and floods wipe out part of Highway 35

12:04 PM PST on Thursday, November 9, 2006

By CRAIG EDWARDS, kgw.com staff

People heading to Mount Hood will have to find a different route this ski season. Heavy rains and a rockslide have overwhelmed Highway 35, taking out part of the freeway between Baseline road and highway 26.

Heavy rains and rock slides wiped out Highway 35 near Mount Hood Meadows.

Highway 35 is the main route for skiers driving to Mount Hood Meadows. A major wall of debris came down, changing the course of the White river. It took out much of the road and even created a 20 foot deep river channel.

“Evidently, something gave loose by the glacier up there and it just kind of all came down at once” said ODOT’s Bob Sork.

oph shit....that suxors.

i remember up here for two season we had to use "alternate" routes up to stevenspass ski area...what a mess.

hopfully there's better routes then what they gave us up here.

I am soooo upset about the road being washed out. Hopefully it gets fixed before meadows opens...supposedly the 17th.

There are literally hundreds of roads up in the mountains that got seriously fucked up that are not only gonna screw with people skiing, but will limit summer activities next year too. Possibly for several years. There are still roads in Washington that haven't been fixed from the 2003 floods.

I'll be out there in January and again in February. Just got my Un. Inc 160 in the mail w/ C-60 bindings from Burton. I stuck with my boots from last year, as they still feel awsome. i hope I can ride with a few of you when I get out there. We'll have a blast!!!!!!!

Hehehe, man I got these dope boots from heelside in 2002 and haven't switched since. You cook the liners in the oven, put them on your feet, and they custom form. I've never had better feel while I ride before.

Now my bindings though... those need to be upgraded... and some new lenses for my oakly a frames.

Hehe, I used to ride carbon bindings. They are fucking rock solid. I found them to be too stiff for my tastes.

BE CAREFUL GETTING ON AND OFF SOME LIFTS WITH THEM. As the high backs are so stiff and made of a rigid material, they can get stuck under the seat and they will sometimes SNAP if it's cold enough out.

Ive heard that! hopefully i can keep em intact..i took em out last weekend with my new NS t5, and together its really weird/stiff riding compared to my old board/bindings that were real flexy and "surfy:

Well you got a high performance board and the most rigid freestyle bindings on the market. It's not a very forgiving setup, but you can really lay it down with that board, espsecially in the pipe!

These are the actual bindings I received. Burton CO2, not the C-60.
You can't really tell in this picture, but the high-backs are asymetrical, with both a right leg and left leg high-back. They're very, very light and ultra responcive. The heel is a soft gel pad with no base plate under neith. It feels so nice when landing onto flatter pitches. I am concerned about them breaking in the cold, but Burton now has a lifetime replacement on all their bindings now. Well see.
