View Full Version : What genre do YOU hate/dislike/avoid?

So we all know that I don't really like Reggae. I mentioned that there is some that I like and that I can respect artists and innovations from the genre.
However, people still cried and started calling me homophobic names... as happens often around here when I say something that differs from what is usually posted on here.
This got me thinking:
EVERYBODY has at least one genre that they usually don't like. I mean, maybe you have found multiple country artists that you kinda like, but generally don't like hip-hop?... maybe the reverse?
Also, why is it okay to say you hate trance but not reggae? Why is it okay to hate country? What about classical -- how many of you ACTUALLY listen to classical? Blues? Folk/bluegrass?
So out with it -- and let's try to let people be honest here. It shouldn't be thought of as 'evil' and 'hating' to express music that annoys us.
Things to keep in mind:
'Pop' is not a genre -- you should specify some artists that you think of as 'pop' if you want people to know what you are talking about.
'Indie' is not a genre either. You must be more specific.
It should be okay to say you don't really know much about something but have generally disliked it.
Finally -- I am not asking this for any weird ulterior motives beyond that I am curious to hear what people have to say... because people rarely discuss music on here and everytime I post about something I DO like it falls off the first page in a day or two.

oddly enough the only genre i would say i dislike as a whole is trance. hmm...
all the other stuff you've mentioned, there are good and bads in it. over the years, i've been into lots of different jazz... certain blues, early rock, folk, rockabilly, bluegrass and country. funk. garage rock, punk rock, indie rock, new wave, etc. a lot of hip hop, house, techno, electro, acid. dub, jungle, hardcore, garage, various forms of minimal, experimental, ambient/noise.. idm, etc. i also wouldnt say i hated "classical"... although thats a huge umbrella. all of those have really great things and REALLY shitty things within them.
generally, the less gimick oriented and the less money is important to them, there is probably something good and creative there
trance, although i will admit its been a while since i took somebody up on a recommendation and listened to it. i havent heard any at all that i like. i'm sure theres lots of variations within that maybe i'm ignoring, but everything i've heard is too anthemic, story like, and predictable.
i also have disliked a large amount of mainstream rock and pop acts of the last 30 years or so, but i havent HATED all of it.
oh and i guess 'metal'. i've given lots of different metal a chance and it doesnt do it for me.
just curious elroy, i dont know much about you, do you listen to trance? or are you ok saying you hate it?
p.s. i didnt use any homophobic names in that thread and think anyone that does use them in an argument is lame. although its hard to tell online if people are using irony or inside jokes by using them.

hmm, as i think about it all of the genres that i don't like anymore i was into (sometimes only briefly) at one time.
country - there was a time when i was interested in old country, i.e. hank williams sr. i'm over that now, and really don't like listening to it, for a number of reasons. a) the only time i hear it is at work, and the radio station my co-workers listen to only plays about 12 different songs. b) a lot of the songs have a really overt message. i hate that shit, even if i agree with what's being said. if i wanted to hear your opinion i wouldn't ask you to fucking sing it to me.
hard ass-thrashing metal - i used to like this kind of music. when i was in 6th grade. it gives me a headache now, and the rebellious-bad-ass attitude often associated with it is really embarassing.
rap - i liked rap when i was in high school. now i don't. the attitude is so repulsive i just can't handle it anymore. i also haven't heard much musically that really grabs me.
that's all that really comes to mind right now. i'll post more if i can think of them.

There are particular bands/producers/artists/songs that I don't care for. But I can't honestly say there's a genre that I don't like. When I was younger I used to say that I didn't like country. But after listening to more of it (what IMO is the good stuff!), I can't even say that anymore.
Reggae, Hyphy and Trance can be good if done right (which again, is obviously based upon my own tastes).

Yani Rules! hahahahah
I'd have to say my vote goes to anything that is Christian. I think any contemporary Christian/Christian pop/Christian rock etc is just brainwashing music. Give the dial a spin while driving through eastern Oregon and enjoy the music of god’s people. It’s just stupid… the worst is when you actually listen for a minute before you realize that you are being preached at…
Here is a wonderful example, probably my least favorite band in the ever “Creed”. Dreadfully catchy shit that is full of thinly veiled analogies about life and religion.
Well I just heard the news today
It seems my life is going to change
I closed my eyes, begin to pray
Then tears of joy stream down my face
With arms wide open
Under the sunlight
Welcome to this place
I'll show you everything
With arms wide open
With arms wide open
Well I don't know if I'm ready
To be the man I have to be
I'll take a breath, I'll take her by my side
We stand in awe, we've created life
YUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

john tesh and yanni are usually considered new age rather than smooth jazz. kenny g, the rippingtons, micheal buble, even some sade are closer to smooth jazz than those boys (but remember, without the smooth, there would be no such thing as g-funk).

Country. Hate it with a passion. All of it. I have respect for the Dixie Chicks for having the balls to be politically liberal in a music genre that is forever politically backwards and patriotic (gag!).
I will also second the votes for "Christian" music and smooth jazz.
Real Jazz is fucking amazing (re-slaps the high kid named pill). John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Sun Ra, Blue Note Records, etc.
Almost all rock music. Rock in my mind has been dead for about 15 years. Grunge was the last rock music I enjoyed, thanks to Nirvana and Pearl Jam. I can still appreciate people like Lenny Kravitz, but most "rock " music is total shit.
Rap - to clarify, I mean the shit on the radio and in most clubs. It IS NOT hip-hop, and don't you dare call it that. Hip-hop was born from funk and disco and was positive party music. There is still good hip-hop out there, it is just not in the mainstream. Rap however, is everywhere, and most is total shit. Studio gangstas, bullshit lyrics, disrespecting women and gay people, etc. It's old. It's tired. Grow up and make real music....
Almost all happy hardcore / hardcore / gabber / whatever....ugh....If I were 14 years old and high as a kite, I might enjoy some happy hardcore, but most of it is total crap. Perhaps the only forms of electronic music I can not get into at all...
my 3.5 cents....

Hey, yanni is NOT smooth Jazz... Yanni is highly composed and usually orchestral New Age which utilizes a wide variety of different sounds from world, classical, jazz and maybe some electronics. hehe... working at a big record store is weird.
Anyhow, I secretly kinda like some yanni... it is kinda cool.

I don't think it is fair to pick on pill for not liking any jazz he's heard. I mean, something to remember is that there was a huge revitalization of Jazz in the late nineties and early 2000s... jazz musicians started doing drumnbass, drumnbass DJs were doing all this jazzy crap... hip-hop was doing the same thing (Digable Planets, anyone? Who were good and all but an example of the jazz-splotion).
When most of us were teenagers this seemed pretty fresh as compared to the early nineties dance (real mccoy, c+c music factory), alt rock (nirvana, smashing pumpkins) and gangster rap (ANYTHING produced by Dre).
So we have fond memories of jazz and learned to appreciate the roots where it came from. However, that sound got BEATEN into the ground. I mean seriously, I was listening to that old Squarepusher album recently... the blue one with the robot people.... hard normal daddy? Anyhow, it is jazzy as fuck and I used to WORSHIP it... but now it sounds totally deadso.
Anyhow, point being -- younger kids see things differently. And I said not to be mean and let people express their opinions!!!!

I have, in fact, listened to trance in the past and liked it. Actually, it might be safe to say that I prefer trance to reggae at this point in my life - which definitely wouldn't have been true 5 years ago or so.
A lot of early trance was sort of interesting... Orbital had a bunch of good songs that could be considered trance. They don't sound athemic or story like to me... though maybe predictable, but that was sort of the point... they just floated along subtly and prettily.
My favorite psy-trance song that I knew by name was Cosmosis's 'Howling at the moon.' It was just one twisted-ass song... sounded like an alien was playing air guitar in another dimension where it would make a sound. It wasn't subtle at all but really fucking kick-ass...
Also, there was this song on the first 'Psycho trance' cd by like... Europa or something? I can't remember... I might still have it in a binder somewhere. Anyhow, the song was called hyperspace or take-off or something... and it totally feels that way to listen to - but it isn't 'epic' or cheesy or even particularly formulaic or predictable... just a totally sweet 4/4 kick track that is dualy subtle and energetic.
Anyhow, that is what I can say for my appreciation for trance... but yeah, generally - what one ACTUALLY hears when they listen to trance these days... its sucks ass... like reggae.
p.s. i didnt use any homophobic names in that thread and think anyone that does use them in an argument is lame. although its hard to tell online if people are using irony or inside jokes by using them.
Just to clarify, these people know that I very much do not like being called these type of insults in serious contexts like this. They knew exactly what they were doing and were attempting to hurt my feelings with this. Yes, they are lame.

as for Kenny G... I've always been a fan of his, even before meeting and jamming with him (I play sax too)... but I would say he has a variety of genres... his earlier stuff is definitely more Fusion (and cooler)... but his 90's stuff is more Smooth and at times Adult Contemporary... nowdays, he's been doing more Jazz standards with a comtemporary sound (check "Songs in the Key of G" and his latest romantic jazz standards album)... but I still find his soloing (improvisation) to be very weak...

Happy Hard Core-Yes, I'm friends with Annika, but I just don't care for it. Never have, never will. I respect her as a DJ, but I just put my ears on ignore when she's spinning, because it doesn't even make me smile or perk my ears up
R & B-Not Rythm & Blues, but all that lame R & B music from the late 80's to now, that is basicly some guy soundling like a wussy so he can make some girl give him some pussy music.....Or the even worse Destiny's Child crap where she does nothing but rank on her man in the song.....Boring.
Industrial-I'm sorry, but if I want to be screamed at, I'll listen to speed metal.
Emo-I admit, I know little or nothing about this genre, but I haven't really heard anything that I can identify with in it, or even understand....How can I when they're screaming at me.
Punk-Anything old and classic, is great. Anything past 91 sucks dingleberries...
Bluegrass-Ugghhh, I blame my parents for this one....I won't even say another word I hate it so much
Top 40-Most of what is popular doesn't really impress me. Maybe I enjoy a band or 2 in the list, but I enjoy them alot less if that's all I ever hear from them. I'd find even less of a reason if they get played all the time as well, and I'd never want to add that band to my cd collection for quite a long, long long time...
Frank Sinatra Rat Pack music- I don't really care for that style of music from the 40's, 50's & 60's and beyond, I'm glad most of those artists are dead, and nobody can really re-create the rat pack era.....It's fine for Vegas, but it's not fine for me....

But yeah, not fond of pop country. Love the old country though because I love the old recording techniques and sound.

While in just about every genre of music there is some song I like, i generally dislike bluegrass music (that really twangy arkansas hick banjo shit!)... and most trance music... just because I got soo burned out on it...oh and happy hardcore.. i just never understood it and I guess i never will...

I hate cheezy fucking rave music.

I hate the sort of ultra generic-sounding four on the floor vaguely trancey "rave music". I don't even know what to call it. It just sounds like RAVE to me, and it sucks. I'd make some snide comment about it being crap music for 16 year olds who don't know better, but then I was partying at that age too. But I had good taste (mimimal techno, dnb)...
ANYWAYS
Maybe it's what "hard nrg" refers to? Gah. Crap, crap, crap.
Muzak, Christian Pop, Radio Country, Jam Bands....
Those are the only ones I really just outright AVOID. Otherwise, I will try it out and tell you if your opinion is right or not.

and I would not... chalk one up for another guilty pleasure. Three six mafia > *
I've been a musician since I was about 5. But I dislike most of the music I hear (and I always have).
Many have taken offense at my opinions, as though I expect them to agree with my tastes, or as though I believe my tastes are "better" than theirs. Not so.
Still, I believe my experiences and feelings are just as valid as anyone else's. And I believe I have a right to express my musical preferences.
OK, so here is my own list of music (by genre) I do not like...
Jam Bands
Indie Rock
Folk Rock
Country
Black Metal (but I like most Death Metal)
Blues
Jazz (nearly all of it anyway)
Psychobilly
"Classic" Punk (Ramones/Sex Pistols etc)
Ska
Reggae
Dancehall
Swing
Hip-Hop/Rap
Romantic-Era Classical (such as Beethoven, Brahms, Tchaikovsky)
Marching Band Music (some of the worst stuff out there)
Nu Breaks (& most breaks really)
IDM (if it's poorly produced or unoriginal, which most is I think)
Anything with a MC (especially DnB with one)
GhettoTech
Disco/Disco House
Electro/Electroclash
Goth/Industrial
any EDM described as "soulful" or "ethereal"
& there are some specific artists I dislike/avoid:
Pink Floyd
Aphex Twin
Bjork
Green Day
Soundgarden/Chris Cornell
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Tool (I can't stand the singer)
There's more I'm sure, if I really think about it, but that's all that comes to mind right now.

VERY GOOD POINT :)
But I gotta say it, cuz I just love to hate it...
DUBSTEP, it's the elevator music to DnB. Can I avoid it? Nope, poopstep happens cuz it's so HYPHY stinky and the next best thing since sliced bread rrrrriiiight? Hahhahaha. But there's is maybe one person who plays it good enuff to not be boring & I can stop doing the 'bobble head dance' (I love hardcore/DnB) ;)
Yah and any music that DEMON plays really sucks. Just kidding, damn I love your "DemonCORE" love love love it. Your crazy.
Any music that IS NOT PREDICTABLE gets an " A+ "
If you dislike music you hear...if your a DJ and have the equipment YOU CAN ALWAYS SWITCH UP (or down) THE BEAT right? Put some REGGAE w/ some HARDCORE w/ some JUNGLE w/ _____ now what?

Maybe it's just that I appreciate artistic profluence in the world of music, but for the most part I can't stand country western or religious music.
Neither seem to want to do anything progressive with music; they're both perfectly content spewing out the same old crap with a slightly different stench to it. That seems to lower the purpose of music to cheap entertainment, rather than artistic expression.

Not much that I hate, but I usually get annoyed listening to:
-Anything that's supposed to be danceable but is atmospheric instead (like atmospheric drum and bass... ugh)
-Atonal or dark/clashing/chaotic ambient
-Extremely dark psytrance with no bass
-"Jazzy" progressive house
-Techno (so far haven't heard anything I like)
-Reggae
-Gangsta rap
-Most country
