wikipedia says:
Scars are areas of fibrous tissue that replace normal skin (or other tissue) after injury. A scar results from the biologic process of wound repair in the skin and other tissues of the body. Thus, scarring is a natural part of the healing process. With the exception of very minor lesions, every wound (e.g. after accident, disease, or surgery) results in some degree of scarring.
Scar tissue is not identical to the tissue which it replaces and is usually of inferior functional quality. For example, scars in the skin are less resistant to ultraviolet radiation, and sweat glands and hair follicles do not grow back within scar tissue. A myocardial infarction, commonly known as a heart attack, causes scar formation in the heart muscle which leads to loss of muscular power and possibly heart failure. However, there are some tissues (e.g. bone) which can heal without any structural or functional deterioration, and in fact bone tissue may be structurally stronger after a break.
The word scar was derived from the Greek word eschara, meaning place of fire (fireplace)

heres my favorites!:

this is from my surgery that was 4 ? years ago. it was two surgeries.. about four months apart. theres a thread running around all about it.
the long vertical scar is where all the main work was be done through. it healed up nice and fine and is still turning from reds to that nice white color even still. i believe theres a seven year period where scars still heal.
the second, horizontal scar is from the same surgeries.. only it was actually open for the the four months between surgeries. it was open as a big cicle (my intestine was running through it) and thus it is now odder than odd. it forms a cleft in my abdomen now.. when i bend at the waist it goes in deeper and really looks crazy. it still is slowly flattening and smoothing out but i dont think i will ever have a level somewhat level abdomen due to it. its not my favorite due to the fucked up way it makes my stomach often look. it also still has moments when its sore for a bit but it decreases with time.
this photo shows the cleft a bit better:
http://i14.tinypic.com/6gecf9s.jpg
there was a third scar near that area from an incision that had a tube hanging out of it for a few days. i believe it was a blood issue? the idea was that it was sucking out blood from the surgery that was in the wrong places due to the cutting and chopping of my intestines... im not sure.. i was pretty fucking high for that year of my life (legally!) and my memory is insanely spotty due to it. however, the scar has mostly dissappeared at this point.
http://i8.tinypic.com/5yiuq0n.jpg
this scar is not very visible... its on the right side (of the photo) near the tip. you can kind of see how it changes the round shape of the tongue a bit (depending on how the tongue is flexed). the visibility is low but its certainly noticeable to touch. you are going to feel it if we are making out but if by chance you want to clamp your fingers around my tongue you will find a hard mass.
it looks fairly small but the actual split was quite a bit longer. i did an unsuccessful flip on a trampoline and my knee hit my chin.. rather hard i guess. you might be asking yourself... "why was your tongue outside of your mouth at that moment?" ... and to that i have no fucking answer.. . .
but the result was bloody. really really fucking bloody. it was eventually sewn back together with dissolvable stitches and was fine and back to normal after about three short days.
that was over ten years ago but i still have a bit of altered speech.. just slightly that only i probably notice.

The only scar I have is from my C-section when I had my daughter, its a straight line most of the way across but when you get to the right side it gets jagged and goes upward. MY daughter had a huge head and they ripped me even more pulling her out... i felt the whole thang... thank got for epidurals. no pain just intersting sesations of guts and baby being pulled out of me and then shoved back in... ack i'll post a picture when i find one haha or take one

I worked at Linens-N-Things and had to put something up on a high shelf and instead of finding a ladder like I should have, I stood on a shelf and lost my footing and caught my wrist on a metal-lined corner.

Okay, so freshman year in high school, it was the day of the homecoming dance and I was showering and I dropped the soap (get your mind out of the gutter, you dirty fucks). I go to pick it up, slip, and my knee goes crashing into the fiberglass tub and puts a hole in it and chunks of tub come off, stuck to my knee. Both scars on my knee are from that incident.

cracked my skull open riding down a really steep hill on a skateboard
no helmet of course
happend in 2002
all I can remember from the accident, was starting to go down the hill then waking up 8 days later in Harborview Medical Center not knowing wtf happend
Someone drove down the hill, saw me, drove to a neighbors house and called the cops for me...but then drove off. A buddy of mine was also driving the hill, stopped, and held a towel that was in his car to my head and also called the cops. Guess when I heard the sirens, I jumped up and acted all frantic like I did something wrong.
The ambulance workers couldnt get me into the ambulance, so they had to get 3 cops to wrestle me down and get me on a stretcher type deal.
I didnt have insurance and the police told me it was a hit and run with no witnesses. Thats all I know.
Outcome?
Tramatic Brain Injury, Fractured Collarbone, and a NASTY Hospitol Bill
wear a helmet when you rollerblade, bike, or skateboard
I guess its kinda important thats why we're taught it so much when we're younger

if a scar curves it gets extra points.
one of mine curls around my belly button.. it doesnt count when you pay a doctor to do it though. a synthetic curl, not as cool.

My left knee.
You can't see it very well but my knee cap is mottled with pale purple scar tissue from a bad snowboarding accident. I still dont know how I did it.
http://i11.tinypic.com/4uveu79.jpg
Back of my left calf.
I got this when I was 5 dancing around the living room. My dad had these huge ass speakers and I gouged it into my calf on the corner.
http://i12.tinypic.com/68i9aow.jpg
My left leg
When I was about seven years old I was rollerskating and went down a hill. I didn't brake quickly enough and slammed leg first into the bumper of my step-dad's van. I split my leg open (about an inch long and half an inch wide) but didn't go to the hospital. My step-grandma at the time told everyone I was over-reacting and it would be fine. To this day its still hallow and filled with scar tissue. It is still about an inch long, quarter to half an inch wide and about 1/8" deep. You can literally feel where the divot is. It's gross.
But I have you all beat!

My left pinky finger
The day I was born the nurse put my identification bracelet on too tightly. She was so nervous she cut my finger with the scalpel as she was trying to cut the bracelet off.

ok , granted they arent even scars yet, nor are they really that gnarly.
these are from a few days ago when i went on a hike and wore a pair of timberland sandals, a shoe that i thought would be perfect for a hike on a warm , dry day.. i guess not. by the time i was near the top of the hike i realized that i was dripping a trail of blood here and there ... just in case any grizzly bears didnt know where to find me. and of course there wasnt much to do until i got the five miles back down the mountain. so now my feet are covered in mounds of scabs that like to pop open at opportune moments and make a bloody mess. good times.
the two on the heels are actually fairly deep and i am excited for matching achiles scars!

ugh, that gives me terrible memories.
when i was 14, i severed my achilles tendon with a tin can lid and was in a cast for months.
i'm still not quite sure how it happened, but i pieced it together as such:
my magazine was on the counter, and my brother was cleaning up after dinner. the lid from a can of creamed corn was on the counter as well and somehow got swept into my magazine.
i was outside flirting with my cute next door neighbor, dennis tanner, when my mom called me in to put away my magazine [a tiger beat with nkotb on the front, of course]. i grabbed the magazine and ran down the hall [ran, because i wanted to get back to dennis]. i don't even remember the point of contact between the lid and my tendon - i didn't feel it, i don't think. but i was screaming and my mom was yelling "shut up! what's wrong?! shut up!"
i ended up taking really good care of it, so it's not even a scar anymore, but if you feel my heel, you can feel the artificial tendon connector.
....that's what i get for eating creamed corn.

this actually made my eyebrows raise. good job. and i love that you were flirting with someone that had the last name "tanner"... i suspect this was in the early nineties? what a horrible name for a teenager in the age of full house.
but, my question is how do they connect tendons? i have never really considered it but its dreadfully interesting now?

I have a scar across my right eyeball from a weedwacker accident at the college I worked at. A grounds crew was getting campus ready for graduation ceremonies, and some rocks got into a nearby weedwacker then flew under my eyeglasses and scratched my eye. My vision in that eye was knocked out for a few days and it was one of the most painful things I have ever had to deal with. The scar is not usually evident, unless my eye doctor puts flourescent dye in it or I'm around irritants like wind, smoke or dust. Just a big red stripe across my eyeball. It won't show up in photos but I have some injury charts from L&I injury comp. from when I got that injury that I guess I could scan if anyone cares.
I'm pretty sure this is a duplicate thread, too...

1989, to be exact. first year of high school, in a new school, new town. pink cast.
tanner also became the name of my youngest son. no relation to dennis, of course. i'd dumped him by second quarter.
i was actually awake when they did the surgery. i couldn't be put under because i'd just eaten dinner. they reached up my leg with some sort of retractor, and pulled my tendon back down my calf, as it had snapped up near my knee. the connector looked like a short tube, with small bearings that went around it, in some sort of gel/liquid. they connected the severed pieces together, and fit the tube over it to cover the "joint", so to speak. it was quite fascinating.

I got these beauts a couple of weeks ago. There's actually a third that isn't visible in this picture that is a week older. At my job, one of my duties (being the newest guy) is breaking down empty crates to put into the wood dumpster. The older one I got just by scratching on myself on one of the exposed nail. With these two, it was about a week later, and I was throwing a crate side into the dumpster. I threw it too high, and it bounced into the raised lid and right back into me. So two nails got a hold of me and ripped my arm open in these two lines, and each single line has one puncture that went deep, in opposite ends from each other (don't know how that happened). I bled quite a bit from the punctures.
Don't worry about me getting tetanus or anything: I had my tetanus booster only two years ago when I got pricked by a few syringes in NYC 2 years ago...
