wtf is up w/those ?....i won't even name drop, but if you get offended then you might as well be guilty.
i see many of those pics as "regular" people goofing off, actin themselves-or dancers/partygoers have taken pics while you were unsuspecting in the act of spinning, etc...i dig that.
but what is up w/the superstar image/i'm bigger than i really am pics that appear here and there ? why the poses in the wierdest places of you looking off in space like you didn't know the pic was coming ... ? this seems to me like sr. pics from high school all over again....
and is it a pre-requisite (sp?) for a dj to wear wristbands/have tatoos, or wear certain clothes that draw attention etc....?
does that really make you look cooler, or are you really making a fashion statement ? cuz nobody i know in real life wears a fucking wristband-for any goddamn reason. the rockstar element among dj's has gotten discusting.
unless you really are the shit, and have the desire/skill to get national/international level, and no i don't mean canada-then i get that, promotional wise. to an extent. it's like bringing a dj from ____ state, and the fact that they're outta state, and have a cool pic makes them headliner worthy-fuck that.

I have only gotten a few tattoos since I started raving and dj'ing, the rest of them were there before I had ever been to a rave.

I read the first part wrong.

Because pock marks and bad lighting don’t sell very well. Same reason that bars are usually dark.

is it meant towards the local dj's or just dj's in general? Alot of time for pictures on threads and flyers, I normally don't have a say in which one they use. They just pick em off my myspace. I have one on there that has a caption that asks promoters to use that one since it seems a little more professional, however no ones ever used it. I guess promo pictures as in like professional pictures, I think they are kinda cool. I know of a Seattle dj that appears as though he's posing for a photo shoot, but I think that was kinda the idea though.
All in all, I think you posed a good question.

hang on you are saying that a DJ...who has a prodcut ie their music and they are trying to sell their product=music to us party goers they shouldn't sell them selves...personaly i think if you are tying to dj and get booked you need to look like you are the B's Knees if you know what i mean...Shit man its called salesmen ship....maybe you dont have it

I don't see an issue with them, they're performers. It's just like any other rock band posting a band pic. A lot of it depends on how the pics are used. Just on NWTekno, ok takes up some post space, cool. But a flyer full of DJ pics isn't neccesary.
Although I will say, as much as I like his music, I think Ryle's pics are a little too glammed up for just a DJ pic. Sometimes I think he puts a lot more effort into his look than his music.

Ryle actually does modeling, so i think the fact he can use those photos as his DJ promo pics are just a bonus.
I don't play out anywhere, but when I do, I will certainly have a lot of nice glammy photos to choose from just because i was doing some modeling stuff for photographers before i got booked anywhere.

But they are djs, not fucking models. The pictures shouldn't make them out to be larger than life. It only goes to fuel the sense of elitism found in our scene.

yeah really, I like doing that sort of stuff because its fun.
they aren't necessarily trying to look bigger than they really are, and i don't think the looks are all that hard to put together and the photos are going to come easily as well. If you can do it, why not?
A lot of it probably has to do with the quality of photographer, if you have a good one, they know the angle to shoot and what will end up looking good. The result is you have an outstanding photo that pops out at you and it took little to no effort to create.

And then the something 'outstanding' looking gets the alarms turned on in people's heads..."hey, hey...he can't do that! you better simmah that down nah!" momentarily turning this board into a board of ultra-conservative republicans lol.
With the bios, there's lying attached so there's a tangible reason there to logically say "he's making himself look big and is self centered", but you can't do something like that with pictures. You have to actually know the person personally to know if they're that way or not...because a picture isn't inherently 'self-centered' just because it looks fashionable.
That's a silly stigma to uphold.

Why do rappers and hip-hop artists have to look hard on their album covers? Why do rockstars wear makeup and have crazy hair? you already answered your own question! Its promotion... but, its also about self expression.
Ask yourself this, if you were throwing a show, and you had two people you could book with similar musical styles and comprable talent who would you book? The plain looking one that stands still up there behind the decks during their set, turns around and leaves, or the one with an image and stage presence that your audience is going to remember for the full spectrum of the preformance: music, image, presence? Its simple... the latter. And why? Really its logical, cause more people will attend. The populus in general love a character and an image.
Do you have to like it and/or agree with it. Nope. But that's the fact. Deal.

its because they are stupid.. Maybe so, I think it would be more accurate to say that some people just don't understand promotion. They just look at it from a musical perspective. I mean I know these guys aren't rockstars. Not even the headliner is a rockstar to me because most of them are people that act just like you and i. Looking at it from a promotional perspective, its smart to put pictures up on your talent. Its about bringing new people into it that don;t know any better. Although its kind of sad when shitty talent gets booked anf portrayed in that way. I dunno maybe its so people will know what you look like when they go to the show because often times the timeslots arent posted or people are too messed up to remember. proper representation of yourself as an artist is the way to go though, for whatever you are trying to do. SO if you want your name and face on the lineup then it should be there. How much you suck will pan out as you play the bookings though. Its up to the promoter to decide that part.

dood i get that, i admitted it in the first post.
i have grown cold to the pics dj's present in they're bio's. ...
as far as the wearing wristbands and shit, it's like a costume-they don't wear it until they get a booking and spin out.
seriously, do you guys wear wristbands when you're not spinning ?
or is it fucking halloween when you get booked.

Shhhhh!! Dont tell em the truth, I always have a good laugh when i see some artists promo shots. Tons of cheese out there!! Dont ruin this for me. :D
I think your skills, your music, and the name you have built for yourself, should sell yourself and your music, not a cheesy promo pic, but they are fun to laugh at so keep em comin.
Poining at the camera with the fish eye lens effect on, is probly one of the funniest and was played out in 86 when the beatie boys dropped the "Shake Your Rump" video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-x9CRogsSfY
On another note, dj's if you want a promoter to use a sertin pic, bio, ect. Make a press kit, which has the material you want to represent yourself in it, and send it to the promoter. Tell the promoter your sending him a press kit that has your material in it that they must use, when you work out the booking.

LOL :D I'm guillty, but not offended :D
I'm with Hollywood and Huesos, its mainly because you have a product that you are selling to the general public. Does it mean you are good...no, not at all. The big thing is that I spend so much time with this music stuff (on top of my regular career) and am pushing to get to that next level, it just seems to happen. I don't fault anyone for having a "pose" type of pic. I look at it more like building the entire product, like Hollywood said.
I'd rather have clubs/promoters use the pic of me in the NYC subway:

I think it was like half a dozen packages of Carl Buddig. We didn't want to resort to purchasing that much ham, but our phone calls to Mr. Buddig regarding sponsorship went unanswered.
Anyway, the whole point of that photo shoot was to make fun of the cliche promo photos. Hence the grafitti, aviators, stupid haircuts, and of course The Ham.
