View Full Version : Dj worship
Why?
I just don't get it, from the placement of the booth, to the hustling for guest list spots to dj hos...it doesnt make sense! I thought the point of what we did was to have fun being equal, why are DJs on stages and why are kids taught to worship them?

well the only way to get some live music going is through a dj or live performer.. and i dont think there are any out there who would want to play behind a black curtain so noone knows who they are...
live music or dj'ing always has to have a source.. we have been praising the sources of music since god knows how long, for thousands of thousands or years, people have gathered together under the "playing" of music, and praising the musician.
So i think its just natural that the source of the music be put on a spotlight so to say, and up for viewing for all to criticize and/ or praise.

"So i think its just natural that the source of the music be put on a spotlight so to say, and up for viewing for all to criticize and/ or praise."
I think your missing his point. 99% of the time the DJ isn't the "source" of the music. The DJ may be playing a record, but that DJ most likely didn't make the music, and to me the producer is the source.

I don't play a party unless there are 8 lines of coke, 3 lines of E, a milk jug of GHB for all my Ho's, and cash up front.....

all righ . ill start with the most obvious...why are the djs on a stage? well, its so that fucked up idiots have a harder time otuching a djs records. ive seen it happen to donald 2x. one of those times, the dork truly looked like he was trying to 'help' donald scratch or some shit, you could tell he was drunk. and there are countless others who fall victim to retarded crowds...ive seen it at least 20 times. oh plus...if the dj were always ground level in the middle of the floor, where would th ebackstage for the ho's be? didja think of that, lol?
second, the idea of worship...this one getts tricky...see, from the time we are little we're taught to look up to someone, anyone, who you deem as better skilled than you in something, cooler than you are, or simply someone you can learn from and be like. we're taught to want/need/look up to someone as a mentor. how many kids wanna be a dj after watching a really good dj? and they feel that way becasue theyre amazed at the idea of being able to move a crowd of thousands just by laying down a good beat. plus, hollywood is the same way...also, think about the ho's. if not for the idea of dj worship, we need to ask ourselves again, 'waht about the ho's? where would the ho's be?'
which brings me to my final and most complex point...
THE HO'S/DJ JOCKS/GUESST LIST JUNKIES
one of my thoeries is that, THESE PEOPLE never got over the dynammics of high school interaction. one way this splits off, is if that perrson was really popular in high school and doesnt understand that the real world doesnt relly work that way, and they carry their "im important watch out!" attitude with them at all times. the other direction this can follow, is if the person were NEVER popular in hig school, and has finaaly found a hook-up that can catapult them into 'stardom', into the 'hey you're a coll guy!' realm, even if its just a rave scene.
as for the ho's, i think this goes as deep as to say that there was a problem in their childhood. maybe an absent father? or an abusive one? so they smear on the red lipstick and strap on the high heals, and say to themselves repeatedly for at least half an hour before the party, "im going to be (insert dj here)'s favorite tonight! im the hottest! ill show you daddy! i give good head now so i dont need you to love me anymore!" or something like that...
ok now im bored. im not typing anymore...

What's sad is that this is a (successful) business strategy to get people to go to large parties. If one boosts some DJs to higher forms of status, one may have a large crowd. To illustrate, I've seen quite a bit of posts in upcoming that stress one or two DJs, and in fact put those DJs in the title of the post.

I think Angelstar's got it down. LOL. images/smilies/smile.gif
Actually, I also think that like any form of entertainment, or skill for that matter, you will have others "worshiping" those of higher ability. And like Angelstar said, we are always taught to look up to those that have more skill ina certain area than we do.
I personally don't really find too much of a problem with it, partially cuz I'm working really hard to get there myself, but I do think ppl take it WAY too far. Sure, somebody might be a fabulous DJ but in any normal situation they'd be horrible to be around. I've also met several DJ's that really have a lot of talent but are as deep as your average kiddy pool. I think you just need to put all the demi-god entertainers into perspective. Just cuz they're good at one thing doesn't mean they should be praised by everyone they meet.
Anyway, I'm rambling.... I do understand the frustration nohJ. But I doubt there's little anyone can do about the obsession with popular entertainers. Just confide in the fact that you're surrounded by mindless idiots. images/smilies/biggrin.gif

speaking from a DJ perspective (strictly on the stage aspect):
if i'm at NAF or FX, put me on a freakin' stage. reason is... there is always someone that wants to touch yr mixer, cables, rex, dex... and the elevation keeps 'em away. if i was playing guitar and somebody kept running up to my amp to turn up the overdrive... i'd be pissed to. same thing. also... in a larger venue, it gives the DJ a better view of the room which is imperative in maintaining a dancefloor. you can see over the heads of all the trainspotters and catch the breakcircle in the back or even the peeps not feelin' it on the sidelines. then you can drop rex until you get all the kids jumpin'.
BUT if i'm playing an intimate gathering, i would much rather be floor level. it gives me a better advantage of building and owning the dancefloor if yr right up in people's faces and you can watch and catch reactions. there is something *personal* in that and i can try my damndest to weave the perfect web for them.
there is no desire for rockstardom in the stage for me personally... only function.

heh. only john would argue logistics of dj hoeing. i think its kina funny, tho, that the only people argueing with him are the people who continually pay $50 to watch their favorite 'dj' hit the play button!

I agree with what John says. ...and the last time I paid more than 10 dollars for a party was way over a year ago.

As far as I'm concerned, a lot of people who go to massives worship the dj because they think he's actually making the music.
Or at least controlling it more than he actually is.
AND they're HELLA HIGH.
And these people don't know shit about music on average anyway.
I will admit that there are a lot of really good djs that do cool shit, yadda yadda.
Once people get over the trendyness of vynil it'll be like sny snoodle in Star Wars, you'll see.
------------------
Don't get too close to my fantasy.
I don't know, I kind of see this whole DJ worship thing as a status symbol. I hardly think I'm the only one who thinks about it like that, I mean, I've heard lots of name dropping. It's actually slightly funny because (no offense to anybody I offend...paradoxial) I have a friend, and she used to mention hanging out with Electrokid or Larry Phunkmen or NAHA and I would think, well, that's great, but these guys aren't really that big anyway. If you're trying to impress somebody...I'd expect you to say you got faced with Tom Rowlands or Afrika Bambaataa, you know? Don't get me wrong, I'm a decent fan of the three DJs I mentioned, but the point remains.
Secondly I believe that the high school analogy is fitting, but once again I have to say that if you're going to kiss ass and drop names, do it right. I hate to be such an elitest prick but a lot of the DJs around this area who I've heard spin aren't much to, pardon the expression, rave about. They do Top 40-ish tracks, ram them into each other, and don't really give it much thought. That's not what I consider good mixing. I can't say I'm an amazing DJ, or a great DJ, or maybe not even a pretty good DJ, but I'm trying, you know? That's where the difference is, I'm doing it because I want to.
By the way, I think they used to say people would get over the "trendiness of vinyl" back when the Warehouse was still around. Vinyl's not particularly cool; most people just prefer it. That's a pretty obvious thing I guess...Most of my records I bought because I collect stuff by the artist/group.
Anyway...I'm expecting flames. Don't disappoint me.

worshipping a dj who actually throws down and forwards the musical scene and plays some music that makes you think is ok in my book. Worshipping dj Tam or somebody playing top 20 shit is just trendy and "cool" to do I guess. Thats just my opinion.
but yeah i agree with rama, it just evolves out of practicality, I guess.

i have a friend that constantly name drops and I think its so fuckin lame..I mean it ameks me mad when I go to a party and its like a fuckin concert or some shit.....
okay..I found a soapbox *taps feet on floor and climbs on* I was a Squeeze the other night...(really good music...to massivy tho)
anyway...Glaude starts spinning (I think he's pretty good I guess...) and i stopped dancing and had a complete moment of clarity as I watched maybe 1000 kidz screaming and jumping up and down for this DJ...it was really weird....I mean I get hella excited and will give a dj props with aoppropriate screaming after a badass breakdown or something, but that happens....mmm...maybe once not during his ENTIRE GODDAMN SET...it just seemed so pathetic that all these kids were screaming and shit like a concert and I .....well I dont think I like the mainsteam anymore.......and I dont worship dj's
slowly fades away.....

Dj Hoes....yummy.
JUST KIDDING.
Anyway, I have been thinking about this alot recently. Why should someone who plays ANOTHER person's music be held in high regard. If they can create a feeling out of all those tracks, then they have natural talent above the Djs at say...Polly Esters spinning on Cd-rs and not mixing. Those Djs should at least get some credit then. The Dj is just like any other person out there. They just like the music a bit more and were willing to throw themselves out there to get started.
As far as dj hoes go. I asked a female friend about this. Her reply was that Djs are "in a certain position of power and they have an obvious talent so that is somewhat sexy to some people" Those same people probably have some searching in their lives to do, I mean I would be more impressed with a girl if she DIDN'T ask me to get on whatever guest list and she was supporting me a bit by showing up and all. That is another issue though.
It is like rock bands...why were the gross, teased out hair bands of the 80s getting all the chicks? Because they are up there doing it and they are "sex symbols" becasue they can play a guitar or something. Fame and power in our society (America) equals sex appeal for most. And then there are the money and connections and stuff but if you can't see that in a person's eyes then you have other issues.
Bottom line...play the music because you like it. Listen to the dj becasue he can move you, not because he is hot or whatever. And don't take advantage of the fact that you are there to CREATE AN ENVIRONMENT for people to enjoy. Not for your own ego.
ok...that was very random and rambling. But you get the point.
Oh yeah...as for the Dj Tam (top 40 point) I agree as long as the person is not mixing the tunes. If they are and they are working at what they do and doing it differently, why are they different than someone playing "underground trance/jungle/house"?

I think that it should be obvious why djs are put on a stage in most cases...Who the fuck wants some fucked up etard or drunk screwing with their equipment! Which in fact platform or not someone always tries to do. Secondly as for the worship, there are always going to be people out there that admire those that have skills they themselves do not have, some people just take it to far! The hos and guest list junkies they are in a leauge all their own I am afraid, and after observing thousands of such individuals one can assume if it weren't the DJs they would be glomming on to somebody.
