I think this is rather community related, whether folks want to accept it or not. Start using the brain on your shoulders kiddies!

CHICAGO - At least one in four teenage girls nationwide has a sexually transmitted disease, or more than 3 million teens, according to the first study of its kind in this age group.

A virus that causes cervical cancer is by far the most common sexually transmitted infection in teen girls aged 14 to 19, while the highest overall prevalence is among black girls — nearly half the blacks studied had at least one STD. That rate compared with 20 percent among both whites and Mexican-American teens, the study from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found.

About half of the girls acknowledged ever having sex; among them, the rate was 40 percent. While some teens define sex as only intercourse, other types of intimate behavior including oral sex can spread some infections.

For many, the numbers likely seem “overwhelming because you’re talking about nearly half of the sexually experienced teens at any one time having evidence of an STD,” said Dr. Margaret Blythe, an adolescent medicine specialist at Indiana University School of Medicine and head of the American Academy of Pediatrics’ committee on adolescence.

But the study highlights what many doctors who treat teens see every day, Blythe said.

Dr. John Douglas, director of the CDC’s division of STD prevention, said the results are the first to examine the combined national prevalence of common sexually transmitted diseases among adolescent girls. He said the data, from 2003-04, likely reflect current rates of infection.

“High STD rates among young women, particularly African-American young women, are clear signs that we must continue developing ways to reach those most at risk,” Douglas said.

The CDC’s Dr. Kevin Fenton said given that STDs can cause infertility and cervical cancer in women, “screening, vaccination and other prevention strategies for sexually active women are among our highest public health priorities.”

HPV most common
The study by CDC researcher Dr. Sara Forhan is an analysis of nationally representative data on 838 girls who participated in a 2003-04 government health survey. Teens were tested for four infections: human papillomavirus, or HPV, which can cause cervical cancer and affected 18 percent of girls studied; chlamydia, which affected 4 percent; trichomoniasis, 2.5 percent; and herpes simplex virus, 2 percent.

Blythe said the results are similar to previous studies examining rates of those diseases individually.

The results were prepared for release Tuesday at a CDC conference in Chicago on preventing sexually transmitted diseases.

HPV can cause genital warts but often has no symptoms. A vaccine targeting several HPV strains recently became available, but Douglas said it likely has not yet had much impact on HPV prevalence rates in teen girls.

Chlamydia and trichomoniasis can be treated with antibiotics. The CDC recommends annual chlamydia screening for all sexually active women under age 25. It also recommends the three-dose HPV vaccine for girls aged 11-12 years, and catch-up shots for females aged 13 to 26.

The American Academy of Pediatrics has similar recommendations.

Douglas said screening tests are underused in part because many teens don’t think they’re at risk, but also, some doctors mistakenly think, ’“Sexually transmitted diseases don’t happen to the kinds of patients I see.”’

Blythe said some doctors also are reluctant to discuss STDs with teen patients or offer screening because of confidentiality concerns, knowing parents would have to be told of the results.

The American Academy of Pediatrics supports confidential teen screening, she said.

Can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not, but they definitely don't have a cure for HPV. There is a vaccine, and some treatment is available, but even that can be dangerous.

Not being sarcastic, just recall seeing something on the news about a vaccine to cure women and one being tested for men....

so half of all teenage girls are sexually active and half of all sexually active teenage girls have at least one infection.

. . . . *shudders*

so how does this translate into adulthood? you'd think that it'd get worse as you get older and rack up more partners.

excuse me i have to go now to thank jesus for favoring me :D

HPV is running rampant in our general age group 16-30. Something like 8 out of every 10 young adults will either contract it or pass it along. There are several different kinds of HPV and of those a small number that can cause cancer. That's the biggest scare. They do have a vaccine for woman, it's worth getting if you're going to have unprotected sex. Most people have it and don't even know that they have it until something comes up abnormal. Especially guys who think that they have nothing to do with it, when they are responsible for passing it.

Planned Parenthood is pushing prevention pretty hard, so go get some free condoms! Wrap that shit up boys or you could give some chick cervical cancer!

maybe [hopefully] people get smarter as they get older and start using condoms?

kids tend to feel a bit more invincible than adults, overall, not just sexually.

IGNORANT!!!

I was with the same partner for over 2 years. Was tested before him... fine... after we broke up..... I had HPV which was approx. a year away from becoming cervical cancer....

1. You don't need to have sex to contract HPV.
HPV is transmitted through genital skin-to-skin sexual contact. No penetration is needed to contract or transmit the virus. HPV can also be passed though vaginal and anal intercourse. Although less common, the virus can be transmitted through oral sex.

2. Not all types of HPV cause cancer.
HPV is a group of over a hundred different viruses. There are some types that are high-risk, cancer-causing strains, and there are other strains that are known to cause genital warts. The HPV strains responsible for genital warts do not cause cancer, and vice versa.

3. HPV is very common.
It is estimated that over 20 million Americans are infected with HPV, making it the most common sexually transmitted disease.

4. There is no cure for HPV.
The types of HPV that cause genital warts and cervical cancer can be managed, not cured. Genital warts can be treated by removing them, but removal does not "cure" the patient.

High-risk types of HPV known to cause cervical cancer can be detected and managed through routine Pap smears in women.

5. Most people with HPV do not have symptoms.
Most people are unaware they are infected with HPV until they are diagnosed with genital warts or have an abnormal Pap smear. People can still be infected and not show any symptoms of HPV. This is why regular Pap smears are vital for women. Unfortunately, there is not currently a medical test to diagnose HPV in men, except for a visual diagnosis of genital warts.

the vaccine is not a cure, its a prevention, against four strains of HPV (the main ones that cause cervical cancer). They actually do not recommend you get it if you already have HPV.

this data doesnt really surprise me either.

Like oneandoneisone said, it's always a good idea to visit Planned Parenthood and to wrap that shit up.

Condoms are rad but they don't always prevent the skin-to-skin spread of HPV. HPV can be transmitted by skin that's touching each other outside of the condom. I read in a study from Planned Parenthood that a female's risk of getting HPV through sex might be reduced up to 70% with proper condom usage. The issue is kind of a thorn in the side of safer-sex/condom advocates because abstinence-only people sometimes interpret it to mean condoms are ineffective at preventing everything and abstinence is the only answer for everyone, but it's also a reminder to us that there's no 100% risk-free "safe sex," just safer sex.

Damn, well please get back to us, or better yet start a strange-diseases thread.
Wow, if you wanted to kill someone and not get caught, all you'd have to do is prick them with a needle of your own blood.... Not that I'm advocating murder or anything... lol

that's not how it works...

you generally need a somewhat major transfusion to kill someone with the wrong blood type.
