View Full Version : WAV mixing on computer?

I want to make a DJ mix on my computer, using MP3's converted into WAV's, and splicing them together, but I have no idea what program could do this. I know that Goa Gil did this to make one of his mix CD's, and I'm sure some sort of a program is out there made specifically for this purpose.

Could someone tell me if such a program exists, which can speed up and slow down songs, and overlap them? It would be pretty nifty if the program can gradually change the tempo of something, rather than just stretch or compress the song, because I would like to start around 130 bpm and end around 160 bpm.

What I need to do is:
- Work with very large WAV files
- Overlap songs
- Speed up and slow down songs. Changing the tempo of the whole song would work, but it would be nice if it could do it gradually throughout the song, so I can change the general tempo throughout the CD, instead of keeping it the same the whole time.

It would be nice if the same program can do everything, but if I have to get 3 seperate programs, I could manage, albeit difficultly ;)

umm its not done yet, but the makers of fruity loops * www.fruityloops.com (http://www.fruityloops.com) * are making a proggie called fruity dj and you can mix mp3s, which skips the hassle of changing them to wav format.

Yeah, I could do that, but that means mixing on the fly, which I am not quite experienced enough to do. With an external mixer, I can use Winamp to mix, but... yeah... not quite the deal I was lookin' for... =P

The Fruity Loops thing intrigues (sp?) me, but that would probably mean paying money... :D Which I might break down and do, depending on the price.

go to www.pcdj.com (http://www.pcdj.com)
they have a free download of the pcdj mp3 jukebox, which has all the features of a regular mp3 player, but lets you mix songs/change temp as well...
you can't pre-mix (to beatmatch) though, but I'm guessing this is a feature available in the purchaseable version of pcdj...

Ah yes, Sonic Foundry... I probably would have remembered this or run across it eventually. It's an 18MB download, so it's going to be a while before I can evaluate it :P

I tried the demo of PCDJ, and it's quite difficult to use when you only have one sound card. (I have a second somewhere, but it's lost in storage...) That metronome thing seems like it would allow me to beatmatch without listening to the other track, but nope, it doesn't help one bit... well, it kind of helps for matching tempo, but that's about it.

What does this demo do in the way of pissing me off and forcing me to buy the full product? I sure hope it's not one of those ones that won't let me save my work... I could live with a timer, or disabled features, but it's just awful when you can't save your work...

cool edit pro, or logic audio.
not real time, but excellent...and emagic has just released a soft sampler, depending on your hard drive, the sky should be the limit with this. recycle is good too...
many dj's and producers have used these progs not only for recording but also for live pa, including x-dream (logic platinum)
good luck! :p

if your trying to edit sound files, sound forge is your best bet. But if you are trying to mix two wav files together to create a mix then I would recomend using Acid. ( http://www.sonicfoundry.com/products/NewShowProduct.asp?PID=15 ) you can take how ever many songs you want and mix them together then create a large wav format for the your whole project. It's an easy program to use, you don't need two sound cards. You just take one wav sample and drag it however long you need it across the timeline. Then you take a second and do the same. I think this is what you are looking for. hope I helped
