to this the older daughter replied MOMM!!!!

Then don't read this thread. It's quite simple. Show me a man who isn't prone to being moved by his gonads and I will show you a shell of a man. We all get this way because it's fun and it eases the pressure so that we don't end up leering at you women every time you walk by. Which would you prefer, because I can ogle all day.

I want you to know, when it comes to believing in god- I really tried. I really really tried. I tried to believe that there is a god who created each one of us in his own image and likeness, loves us very much and keeps a close eye on things. I really tried to believe that, but I gotta tell you, the longer you live, the more you look around, the more you realize...something is FUCKED-UP. Something is WRONG here. War, disease, death, destruction, hunger, filth, poverty, torture, crime, corruption and the Ice Capades. Something is definitely wrong. This is NOT good work. If this is the best god can do, I am NOT impressed. Results like these do not belong on the resume of a supreme being. This is the kind of shit you'd expect from an office temp with a bad attitude. And just between you and me, in any decently run universe, this guy would have been out on his all-powerful-ass a long time ago. -George Carlin
Here's another question I've been pondering- What is all this shit about Angels? Have you herd this? 3 out of 4 people belive in Angels. Are you FUCKING STUPID? Has everybody lost their mind? You know what I think it is? I think it's a massive, collective, psychotic chemical flashback for all the drugs smoked, swallowed, shot, and obsorbed rectally by all Americans from 1960 to 1990. 30 years of street drugs will get you some fucking Angels my friend! - George Carlin
I would never want to be a member of a group whose symbol was a guy nailed to two pieces of wood. - George Carlin

i was raised catholic. as a result, all kinds of horrible and unnecessary feelings and personal doubts are second nature to me. yay oldschool oppression!
i'm not really catholic. i'm a bastard mix of spiritual, scientific, and self-realized / logical ideas about life in this universe and my gloriously black soul that make sense to me and probably no one else. lol...i kid. sort of. who said black was bad anyhow? so sort of.
my family would shit if they knew what i believed in, but some good things admittedly did get pounded into my head that probably wouldn't have if i hadn't had the strict catholic mom and grandma. like no babies before marriage. and no marriage before growing the fuck up. and marriage only being meant to do once. i think it's served me pretty damn well so far. i know of lots of girls that didn't have that stressed to them, and while of course i don't pity my friends or their situations - far from it - i wouldn't want to trade places either.
*shrug*
it's a fucked-up religion (...wait, which one isn't, again??! oh yeah, they all are.), but i like all the pagan roots / art / ceremony. FASCINATING! and vatican city is on the list of places i'd go in europe, for sure. it's stunningly beautiful there. the ART! the HISTORY! swoon! they actually have one of the world's best astronomical observatories too. DOUBLE SWOON!
i guess so long as it makes you happy or brings something positive to your life, i see no harm. once you start going all crazy and fundamental with it though...imposing your will on other institutions or unsupecting people...then i am adamantly opposed...ultimately, to each his own.

Catholicism is a soft, nice religion, it adopts well to society, as well as fairly liberal, as far as religions go.

The fact is we all don't want the same thing. If we all wanted the same thing then it would happen.
Like G.C. said, If we are gods work then fuck, his ass needs to be fired.
The problem is everyone is running around trying to appease there god and killing people around them to do it. That's always been the problem with religion. Does just enough good and instills just enough fear to keep people attending and giving money. Then turns around the rapes anyone who doesn't follow the same belief.
The Catholic church is the single wealthiest entity in the history of the world, yet they have the poorest most destitute congregation. They suck the money out of the people who follow them and give very very little back when compared to how much they have sitting around.
If there is a higher force, it is most def not an all loving power. Nothing in the history of the world has shown god to be a kind or loving.
Hell, if you read the bible with open eyes god is a monster in there too. Why would his followers be any different?
I'm still waiting to see any logic come out of the god crew.

in response to "whatthefuckhaveyougonemadandfellforthatcraptheytel lyouinthebible" question from the young man in the 5th row, i have to say this.
my pladates with religion have been happenning for a very long time.
as a person with a penchant for all things esoteric, mysterious, and unaccessable by anything other than an epiphany, i've always looked for an outlet for my soul.
there was painting, there was music, there were other things.
I live in Russia. i used to love churches here. but something happened. maybe, it's because i work in the news. and i read/write/imbibe information about Russian Orthodox church that takes it down from its altar, rips its resplendent gilded shroud off, and casts it down upon earth.
in other words, i see too much petty human involvement.
i went to Italy this past April. i was amazed to see how deeply entertwined religion and everyday life were. you see kids out in the park out for a walk. you see a tiny old nun chatting with one of the mums. and they were both laughing.
i saw a young man walk into a church.
he walked around, then sat down, with a somewhat vacant look upon his face.
i thought he was a tourist.
but then a priest emerged, smiled, and ventured to the young man, inviting him into the confessional booth.
and i also so art. i saw the most magnificent creations -- all done by men -- in the service of something beyond our everyday life. they themselves may not have believed in God. i am vary of ever giving name to something i don't understand.
but to me, Art by Human Hand -- amazing and frightening in its beauty or its sheer ugliness -- is one of manifestation of that "something" we like to call The Divine Being.
i will continue toying with an idea of taking up one religion, or another.
but i probably won't.
i like to be able to explore any religion and its traditions with an unencumbered mind. because i honestly believe that everyone, who prays, prays to the same thing. they just give it different names, and follow different rituals.
but the essence is the same.

It more seems you have a penchant for things that make you feel warm and fuzzy inside. That's one of the many tricks of Religion. They get you caught up with their big stained glass windows, chapels and such. Makes the whole "There is a big guy watching me in the sky" shit sandwich easier to swallow.
I agree that Religion is esoteric. Only a select few of its followers at the top (where the money goes) know it to be a total pile of bullshit.
There is nothing mysterious about Religion. Conflicting, barbaric, evil, yes, mysterious..not so much.
I can see how it would be so big in Russia. A place stricken by so much pain over the last century would be prime land for the Jesus cult to move in.
Like I said. Catholicism is strong where people are poor and easy to sway towards something that makes them feel good or gives them hope.
The real question is if most of their followers are poor, sick and starving, why isn't the catholic church using its vast wealth to help them?
I don't want to hear shit about blankets and food drops. The Catholic church could seriously improve the lives of millions of its brainwashed with the money and power it has. Yet it doesn't. People tend not to be as easy to control when they are fed and healthy.

Buddhism, much different form other religions, not even really a religion. I am not a Buddhist per se, but I have found much in their ways of thinking to be very helpful with leading a peaceful, balanced life.

quite on the contrary.
it's hardly the habit of bourgeoisie to start any kind of revolution.
it's the oppressed, the hungry, the angry, the poor that are the hardest to control. for they have nothing to lose.
but we're digressing into politics here.

in a political sense that is true, but religions actually blossom among poor populations. nothing inspires belief and yearning for a paradise afterlife than a life full of hardship and desperation. prevent them from learning to read or do "heretical science", and you've got a pretty well-rounded control mechanism. ala the Catholic church in the middle ages.

in that respect -- yes, absolutely.
Christianity spread among the plebes through the Roman Empire like fire through a barn with hay.
simple logic: you may have nothing in this life, but after you die you'll have more than you can even imagine.

The word is stigmatized that way cause it's converse is the only thing anyone has ever known, but strictly speaking, harmony would remove boundaries and free people up to do anything, and make life truly 'life'.

i agree religion is used as a tool for all the wrong reasons quite often, but what is wrong with someone picking it for themselves as opposed to it beinf force-fed to them?

It is very interesting that a story about a guy just doing his job turns into a deeply philosophical conversation about why most of us should or shouldn’t be put down like feral cats.

“All the human mitochondrial DNA sequences that exist today are descended from that of one African woman, just as all the Y chromosomes can be traced back to that of one man. Indeed, it has been estimated that all the human DNA in existence today originated with as few as 86,000 individuals.”
Wouldn’t it be simpler to say that ‘all the human DNA in existence today originated from 2 individuals’?

Well human DNA was probably different from other proto-human species in some small way.
Also, you have to point out mitochondrial Eve because she was the most recent common ancestor, but not the first human. Simply saying "it started with 2 individuals" doesn't take that into account.

No, because that's not what the excerpt means. Mitochondria have their own DNA separate from human DNA. The "first sentence in the first paragraph" (an odd way to put it since there is only one paragraph in your quote) refers to mitochondrial DNA, not human nuclear DNA.
You might also note that the next sentence specifically rules out your "simpler" rephrasing, stating outright that human DNA is likely originated from somewhere in the neighborhood of 86,000 individuals.
Also, did I miss the context of this quote somewhere earlier in the thread? posting a couple of sentences from one article isn't a great way to get commentary on the meaning of the article to be honest. linkage?

To bad history totally conflicts with that in every way. When you are hungry and starving, being angry doesn't go far. Good luck on getting 1,000 starving, untrained people to attack 500 well fed and armed soldiers. Lets say the first 1,000 attacks and is slaughtered, the next 1,000 isn't going to do it.
Why would well fed people revolt?
You also give people common enemies, like America did with the middle east. They gave the uneducated people of our country a common enemy and then started raping us of our rights and freedoms under the guise that it was to protect us from our enemies.
Uneducated People who are starving and hungry are going to go for the first place they are welcome, which would be Religion.
If you believe that religion and politics have nothing in common then you really really need some serious history lessons.
But, you are ready and willing to be baptized into this den of lies and control, so I'm not surprised at your lack of understanding on this issue. People who are not educated tend to make uneducated choices. Religion will always have a place for people who have not or will not gain an understand of its hand in the history of the world.

The quote comes from Niall Ferguson and this book. (http://www.amazon.co.uk/War-World-Historys-Hatred-History/dp/0713997087)
Proto-humans aside, the concept of a single woman from Africa and a chromosomal ‘Adam’ seems to be self explanatory.

funny thing about te starving underclass, total catch 22 dependig on the circumstance. sometimes it ends up with the underclass accepting the party line as truth to strive for (brahman class / castes anyone?) and succumbing to their god-given "fates"...other times, it spawns such a rage that that it overthrows the sleepig giant in charge and replaces it with an equally terrifying one that's actually awake. and there's literally no way of predicting which way itll go.

ok back on track here...
I was at a wine event with my mom saturday. I was wearing a t-shirt that said on the front "malt whiskey" in the Disney font....on the back it says "friskey for whiskey"
not more then 10 minutes there and several people were commenting on it.
only took about 30 minutes for a group of late 30's & early 40's "eastside" mom's came up & started talking to me about my shirt. and how much they wanted one like it...for "those nights i feel real frisky" and she gives me that lil arm nudge and a wink....
mom is totally embarrased at this point....
but i'm not rude, and participate in the conversation...thank them for the compliment and make our way up to the next wine tasting.
a little later we're gettin lunch. the "MILF ringleader" was right behind me....we sat down...she sat at another table across from me, where my mom couldn't see her...she was lookin and making lil faces & gestures the whole time I ate.

Yes so you just proved my point.
Intellectuals think them up and get them going. When you take them away (which the goverment and churches are EXTREMELY good at) you have poor, and hungry people who do nothing but continue to scrape to get by.
Poor and hungry people without some kind of guiding force will continue to be hungry and poor if they have an opposing force large enough to keep them scared and down. More times then not people move from one slave master to another.
So yeah, I think you need to expand your education a little.
but eh, do whatever you want.
