View Full Version : I wanna get on welfare..where's my check?
Darnsworth

It's my new project. To get on *welfare* and stay on it indefinitely. I just can't seem to get excited about any work but I still wanna get money from the government- isn't that the american dream?
Now, mind you- those first checks will be small..something like $350 GAU a month, going up to a mind boggling $658 for SSI. But that's respectable.
I've been without work for over a year, plus I've converted all my hard cash into gold coins and buried them in spots around capitol hill, like a leprechaun. So I don't have anything of value except for a $400 van and some assault rifles.
Do you live on welfare or do you know anyone who does?
I'll be crazy, shit on myself- whatever. Help me get a check!

an ex of mine got food stamps after breaking her ancle, and being out of work, although she was still working (?)
we'd go and buy some nice tenderloins and lobsters for a nice sat evening dinner, and she'd insist on paying with her food stamp card. we got evil looks from the cashier every time. It bugged the hell out of me too.

Eastside, south side are shitty places to live however; the Northend and westside have very nice houses and good neighborhoods. We live in the fircrest area. Decent two story house range from 275K to 375K and a one story rambler are in the low 200K. There is no such thing as a 1000/mo mortgage without going beyond the 20% downpayment , but ya i would give you $883:D
PS i wouldn't mind getting those relief gas cards!

I think some people think I need to be on welfare because my mom and dad are. I’m tired of this inane prejudice. It’s almost racist. I am not damaged goods or genetically inferior. I’m tired of being denied work just because they don’t want to take a chance on me. I’m not going to lie and say I’m disabled either. I cannot even work with my ‘friends’ in the electronic scene because they think I’m mentally ill. Well I guess life isn’t fair.

lolz!
everyone knows the real money is in having unwanted kids. free housing, free bills and health insurance, free car, free food, free childcare, AND you don't even have to work! you can also run many scams on top of it -- like not reporting your work so that you get "double income", or renting out your free rooms to your crackhead friends for extra dough!
hell, i even knew a girl (one of those people everyone unfortunately knew, that bitch was everywhere) who even got hundreds of dollar's worth of FREE CHRISTMAS for her kids every year!
get a bitch pregnant and just watch the benefits fly!

My mom got pregnant with me just to stay on welfare and everyone knows it (thanks mom!). Then my dad got hit by the state for child support and loathes my mother and me. Now I’m just some bastard refugee that everyone loathes. Yay for the heartless and cynical!

I have plenty of food at my house. My other ‘family’ down the street doesn’t. No amount of money and stamps is going to fix the broken hearts and bad attitudes. I’m not going to let anyone in my kitchen who cannot observe basic hygiene, respect and a simple sense of aesthetics. We’ve got the goods but just can’t get along. America has no shortage of food. We are obese, selfish, foolish, redundant, hateful and wasteful. We don’t all just get along.

NO KIDDING!!!! i never got how people could prefer fast food and constant take out to a good home-cooked meal. and by home-cooked meal, i do not mean frozen mac n cheese and hot pockets *retch*
sure fast food is good once in a while but nothing can touch chopping up piles of fresh veggies, fresh herbs and spices, mmmmm fresh juicy meats, creating sauces / rubs / marinades, and whipping up something fantastic out of it. and it's way cheaper. and funner! and better for you!

QFT!!!!
that and i didnt even eat fast food more than once every six months or so(when wed trip to like a big city like athens or pirea) until i moved here to the states, and then got fat, and then it took me 6 years to get unfat, and i spend most of my money on eating, which sucks because i buy real basic shit....
HOW COME GOOD FOOD AS IN REAL FOOD IS SO GODDAMN EXPENSIVE>>>>!
its fuckered up guys, sad cuz in alot of parts of the world, there is no produce industry embraced like it is here, the majority of it all comes from local farmers that bring their shit to local produce markets.
fuck grocery stores.

Fremont public association will actually teach homeless people/people who are living in poverty/on welfare how to make good healthy meals on a budget.
and by budget i mean the what? $200 you get in foodstamps each month? maybe less?
i tried to get it set up at one of our houses, but couldn't get enough interest around it to get it going...:(
i'm excited to get to move in with my boyfriend and try and save on not eating out all the time! coordinating our schedules for meals is hard right now, this way we can get stuff that keeps at costco and then other stuff at the regular grocery store and plan out meals ahead of time.
btw...gau is only $339 and ssi is $638 (i think that's right for ssi). this is assuming you pay rent somewhere, if you can't prove that they give you something like $206. I can't believe people can survive off of that. SSI takes a long time to be approved for it seems as well, they make it a habit to always deny you at least once.

It's going to take a lot of work! My brother is paranoid schizophrenic and is diagnosed, and it still took about 4 years and 3 appeals before he was able to get on SSI. It was really shitty too, because all he does is eat, smoke cigs, and drink, so he is really expensive for my mom to take care of. It was awesome when he got it for two reasons: If you have drug seeking behaviors (which he does) they won't just GIVE it to you, they appoint a caregiver who doles it out to you. And because it helps out a lot financially, obviously.
So yeah, if you are really interested better start working on it now :D

Yes... well it's all relative. My best example is my good friend, Michael, who gets the $638 SSI per month.
He also gets DSHS medical and food stamps
And his mediumish studio apartment on Capitol Hill is $167 a month!! Section 8.
That's sweet. He's also a saver and he goes to Europe and other international places a few times a year. He couch surfs.
And his girlfriend is hot.

You don't understand. It's a means to an end. If I don't have to worry about money, housing or food FOREVER- what is that worth?
Then I can lounge around. I can focus on my art indefinitely.. I could go to the park for 8 hours a day and read a book. Could I do that if I had to work and pay rent? Probably not or if I did I'd be constantly worrying about wasting time and not paying my bills.
I could walk to alaska or build a boat.
I could roam the city finding electronics discarded on the sidewalk, take them home and rebuild them into musical instruments.. or not.
the possibilities are endless. Because I would no longer have to worry about housing or money. You can't put a dollar value on that peace of mind.

Lifestyle and expectations play into this. Burningman is a great example of the mixture of artists, free thinkers, free loaders, criminals and the mentally ill we have all around us. Some people plan and save and go to the show. Others just get there with no particular plan and figure it out as they go along.

This sounds good in theory I just don’t believe it. My mom is ‘disabled’, lives alone in her own apartment, is prescribed klonopin, vicodin and has spending money for marijuana and food. There is very little oversight. It’s a joke.
My dad is in low income housing and has an inspection coming up. He’s on anti-anxiety meds, pain meds and drinks. They hoard cats, have 6 people living there and have a half ton of garbage in a trailer in front of their house. I can’t rat them out because where would they go? My house? It seems that DHS and mental health just dole out money and medication. They don’t seem to be helping any of these people. It’s a joke. It seems that the only people I can call on are the Ghostbusters.

I'm still confused at how you couldn't do those things if you were successfully employed.
But if collecting welfare suddenly opens up 'endless' possiblities, then I wish you the best of luck at your dreams.

I grew up on welfare and well it was a good idea in theroy but there are just way too many people abusing the system. So basically everything is fucked and many who need actual help can not get it due to lack of resources being hogged up by the lazy. I wish they would make drug testing manditory for everyone on the welfare system and revoke the benefits for those that fail. .... that would be a start.

My question here is: Why in the hell should I subsidize your bohemian lifestyle if you're not genuinely incompetent? You'd better believe I can put a dollar amount on your peace of mind: $0. Either you make a contribution to society or you get the hell out.
I might be willing to let it slide a little if you were creating great works of art that had tremendous social and cultural impact. Basically, if I'm going to invest in you (by way of paying taxes), I expect dividends.

Darnsworth, I used to work for the State of Oregon's Adult & Family Services division. the folks who give away food stamps and welfare.
you - my friend - are what we referred to as an "ABAWD"
Able Bodied Adult Without Dependents.
in the late 90's, Clinton was taking a lot of heat from the Republican majority in the House and the Senate, so to prove he was a "tough liberal", he introduced the "Welfare to Work" program.
which was, essentially, after removing all the pomp and circumstance, a means to which he could quickly remove people assigned to welfare, off of welfare.
democrats loved it because his press secretary was able to proudly proclaim that he'd created more success stories. after all, significantly fewer people on welfare means significantly more people were back to work, right? right? ;)
republicans loved it because they knew that after all the pomp and circumstance, a bunch of people were kicked off of welfare. which makes right wingers lolz. (honestly, I kind of lolz'ed as well).
after Clinton's policies went into effect, I can't tell you how many able-bodied men with no kids came into the office, desperate, broke, starving, and in severe need of services.... and how many of those men we threw out on their ear. it was a lot though.
now - here's the irony - Bush 2, despite all his tough guy stances, has actually relaxed a lot of the federal mandates to qualify for welfare. but for the most part, most of Clinton's updated policies are still in effect. so you might be able to work some new angles like welfare clients in the pre-Clinton days used to.
but for the most part - unless you can prove you are incapable of working, you should not expect to receive benefits. if you do, you should not expect to receive them for more than 6 months.
even if you do wind up getting benefits, it requires about 20+ hours per week keeping the momentum going. there are a lot of hurdles, a lot of hoops to jump through, and a lot of processing, interviewing, documenting, etc that you need to do to continue to prove you require assistance. its seriously about as much a hassle as getting, you know, a real job.
go forth and try if you want to try, but I'm just saying - voice of experience here - the rumors you've heard about how "easy" it is to get on, and stay on, public assistance... do not accurately reflect the reality of how public assistance works.

Glad to see you've set your sights high.
You can go on welfare indefinately, under the following conditions:
1- You're castrated, so we don't have any more failures like you running about
2- You're drug tested monthly, BEFORE you get your check.
3- You're required to do 50 hours of community service a month.
You want the state to support you, you get to abide by our conditions.

I don't want to consume more. I just want to eat the extra food they were gonna throw away anyways.

But everyone gets all upset because I'm capable of working at rite aid but I choose to scam the system instead. i respect a hard worker who enjoys the fruits of his labor a lot more than i respect a guy who "doesn't consume really anything" and accomplishes absolutely nothing. I'm not a big fan of seinfeld but guess what? he made a lot of people laugh and worked very hard to do it. its not his fault that people liked his comedy so much that they gave him enough money for 65 porsches or whatever. and its a stupid argument that we should be angry at him for it.

No, your philosophy is equivalent to "dont work at all and fuck the rest". Yeah, its not hard for me to tell which argument is less valid here. In a world full of you everybody would starve to death, because you're a lazy bum who produces nothing.
Furthmore your argument presents a false dichotomy. Well, I don’t wanna get kidnapped and work on a pirate ship with Pinocchio’s ‘friends’.
I was approached by a Marine recruiter the other day. I was flattered but didn’t tell him that I only have about 4 months left in which I’m eligible and couldn’t pass the hair test. I’d rather pump gas under a cover than burn in the hot sun mowing lawns for the same amount of money. A grocery store or data entry would be even better. I just don’t understand why I can donate plasma and smoke weed but have to piss is a cup to push buttons and shopping carts. Anyway, I’m shy and only like being assertive on the internet because I’m a wuss... which is the only way to apply at a lot of places now.

Also, this just makes you look stupid. Five seconds on Google tells me that Seinfeld did standup for over ten years before he got his show. He did Letterman and Merv Griffin for many years before he made Seinfeld with Larry David.

the beauty of watching one's effort contribute to or create something is the beauty of life. work creates change. a lot of work is boxed in by this society--in rite-aids or in cubicles, but that doesn't mean that the essence of work is spoilt or can be contained. all the jobs i've had (and do have) give me character-building experience and funny memories. there are plenty of ways to earn one's way outside or on the outskirts of corporate culture. if you want to be an artist, Darnsworth, do it! make a crazy video and post it on youtube and it will go viral like wildfire and then sell autographed cd's of the video with a secret bonus movie on ebay and on streetcorners. spraypaint stencil graff on the sidewalks of seattle and then sell tshirts with the same stencil on them. whatever, i'm sure you can use your creative artist mind to come up with something interesting to jam the system with.
also you should dumpsterdive if you want free food. plenty of kids here in Eugene do it. I won't eat food that has been in a garbage can (and i did once have a friend that i'd have to ask, "did you get this from a dumpster?" and usually the answer was yes), but most people can't really tell the difference. or you could ask around at the end of the farmer's markets if any of the farms have a leftover carrot or some wilted salad greens. who knows, they might.
to answer the original question, my homey finally got social security benefits a couple of months ago. when he found out he got approved, he said, "yes! free money for life! my dream has come true!" he has to go through a bunch of mental trauma and institutionalization to get it though, a stint in pendleton, like four months in salem state hospital where they filmed 'one flew over the coocoo's nest,' five weeks in bakirkoy ruh ve sinir hastahanesi in istanbul, and a couple seperate month-long stays in the johnson unit here in eugene. so you have to ask yourself- is it worth it?

measuring mental capacity is something not a single person in this thread is capable of.You may talk to a person with a very real and present illness and never know.Post traumatic stress disorder comes to mind as well as some types of bipolar. From what a lot of studies have shown 90% of bipolars have an addict personality.
A good share of people think you have to be digging in your arms for "secret government implants" or convinced you are madonna to be eligible to have the assistance one needs when most of the time people take care of those people just fine. Its the people with a subtle illness that makes them seem "normal" to you but inside they have great difficulties being the same person you met everyday.
Its because of this attitude it makes oregon such a shitty state to live in.Washington and California take care of those borderline cases and a good share find employment after they stabilize.Oregon doesn't feed its people having a stupid food stamps system and requires people to be institutionalized to recieve the 280 or some odd dollars general assistance needed to contribute towards rent somewhere.
With no food and no money people become desperate and will rob you or mugg you. That's why I always feel safer wandering the streets of downtown seattle at 4 am than portland. This is how this affects all of you when these programs are cut and the unemployable turn to crime.

I think the definition of ‘mental illness’ is subjective. If you stay up long enough you will start to hallucinate. It is reversible without medication and does not mean you are schizophrenic.
My family does not have a neurological condition. They need better discipline and structure.

That may be, but so long as they produce at least 21 times as much as you claim to consume, it's none of your business.
At this point it's pretty obvious that you're just trolling for the attention, but I'm glad that you bring this up and state it in such brazen and obviously flawed terms. Society is a choice that each of us makes but it's natural to feel powerless in the face of it. In the end, though, we're social animals and we're stuck with society in some form or other. It's up to all of us to affect it somehow.
Keep doing what you're doing. If you're seriously just a social leech, you're a tiny drop in a enormous bucket and there's absolutely nothing about your lifestyle that makes you special. I've lived that lifestyle enough to know first hand. The impact you'll make if you manage to collect some kind of welfare is almost infinitesimal, meaning both that you alone will cost us each a tiny fraction of a penny to support and that you'll have no stable material or emotional base from which to create your "art," thereby nipping in the bud any shot at changing the world through whatever creativity you possess. One way or another, you will invest your time and energy in sustaining yourself, and doing so by cunning alone will sap you far more than doing so by rote and diligence.
So good luck with that.

dude, Darnsworth, seriously.... I worked for the welfare department for quite a while.
you used to work at Microsoft right? but quit because of all the stupid petty bullshit you dealt with from bosses, and all this fucked up scheming of the consumer that was up and in your face with every corporate memo, every mission statement... right?
expect a million times more bullshit rules and expectations, and expect to be a million more times depressed by sitting in the waiting room casually observing the "industry" that is called "welfare."
go get yourself a part time job selling shots of coffee for an independent business. you'll make just as much (if not more) money, you'll spend just as much time (if not less) "working for someone else" than you'd have to spend jumping through hoops for some caseworker, and its significantly less depressing.
I mean - dude - I almost got fired once. and its fucking impossible to fire a state employee, they have a stronger union than mafia-owned unions on Chicago docks. but I almost got fired once.
they use cards now instead of stamps, right? because people can sell the stamps, but cards are issued to one person... harder to scheme the system and sell your food stamps for drugs, when they're attached to a card.
so worker bees (me, at the time) have to activate the cards. we were told, "don't activate the cards after 4:30 because you might disrupt the backup tapes on the mainframes in Salem"
this woman comes in, Mexican, barely speaks English. 3 kids with her. I knew her case. her American husband and baby daddy had beaten her, she'd shown up frightened and bruised. we'd found her a new home and gotten her on foodies.
it was 4:45. the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. office was closed the next day, and also the Friday after Thanksgiving. oh, and also for the weekend. I was about to clock out, no more worky for me until Monday.
4:45, she comes in with her dead card. just needs me to take 3 minutes to swipe it thru a machine, click a few buttons, and bang - her card is worky worky. but I'm not supposed to. its after 4:30 so technically she should be assed until Monday.
well, me being the nice fucking person that I am, I swipe her card, and let her have her happy fucking Thanksgiving. damn near got fired for that. in fact, the Director of the organization, a lady who worked side by side with the Governor every day, she personally wrote a letter to my boss accusing me of being "too cavalier".
thats one of a thousand stories I could tell you. most workers would have said "come back on Monday" to that poor woman. and by Monday she would have had more problems.
***
so - kudos for quitting Microsoft if you hated Microsoft (although personally I'd love to work for them). kudos for quitting heroin. but like I say, you're asking for a hell of a lot more hassle and depression, with about the same amount of sacrifice of your "free time", and for a hell of a lot less money..... getting on public assistance.
better idea. go work part time for some small independent businessman or woman. quitting the hassle and unethical atmosphere of corporate America, to go get on public assistance is like jumping out of the frying pan into the fire.

I agree with this. When I got off the street, I worked for a home based mail-order business out in Lake City. They took care of me, I took care of them, and to this day we're still really close. measure people by their abilities, not by their possessions...
it's not what you have, but what you give

My abilities stimualted jobs, gave the disabled care and boarding so they dont get institutionalized ; I ran this business alone for many years and got to the point that where i am cant do it anymore and hired people so the clients will have one to one care! The poessions are my obessions ever since i was a kid i dream of having nice car instead driving my shitty 1983 Ford LTD Bourgham. Dont get me wrong, i supervise my employess and meet with doctors/nurses/DSHS CN and Licensors for the well being of my clients. Lets just say i have more time now that i ever did before. So what do you do?

Thanks for filling me in on your activity-- I figured you probably had to work pretty hard to get to where you are in life. Only I wanted you to tell me what you did... I feel like you share about what you own more often than about how you act. And when you say things akin to "i get paid to laze around on the i-net all day," it doesn't do your life justice, maybe? Or i guess i got the wrong impression, at least. Again I thank you for setting the record straight. And i hope the people you help thank you as well.. do you ever meet with them? I still don't exactly understand how your business works but i'd like to learn more.
As for what I do (you were directing that question at me personally right), I generally try to be a good human, as yoink as that may sound, but i try to keep my focus on that. I do yoga and read books, go to the river with my little brothers, meet people and tell stories and dance all night and cook and clean and take my dog for walks. among many other things My goal at this point is twofold: to better understand the world in which i live, and also to accumulate skiils and experiences that will enrich my life and the world for a long time. As for income, I've got three jobs right now: I slang mid-century modern goods at Oak St. Vintage, I hostess at the Davis Bar, and (my favorite just barely) I bellydance at Maroc restaurant on Sundays. I'm also occasionally dipping into the money i made teaching English last year. That's where I feel most in my element-- helping people learn. I hope I can do that forever in some form or another. smiley face.

"i get paid to laze around on the i-net all day,"
that was merely a joke since this thread was about getting welfare checks and doing nothing.
Well my business is an Adult family home which is contracted by the state and sometimes private. We provide boarding and care for the developed and mentally challenged. My clients reside in residential homes that i own which is staff by eight people. Instead of living in an insitution which to me is very close to prison they have the satifisifaction of living in a family setting which my clients all consider themselves with me and to each other as family and the freedom to do what ever they desire. I see my clients every day and occasionally take them on outings. I enjoyed doing this over my previous job which was a microbiologist for the Wa State dept of health. I have always had a heart for the disabled ever since i volunteer in special ed in high school!
You belly dance that intresting my wife does that to; she has taught me some moves. Shes belly dance since she was a kid in Beiruit.

that sounds like serious business! it takes a special kind of person to be a caregiver. i'm glad that helping others is something you enjoy.
and on the other note, boys bellydancing is awesome--i'm glad you're up for the challenge. my darling is on vacation in alanya and the bellydancer at his hotel taught him and all the other men staying there some moves. he said they were all standing in the middle of some banquet hall, trying to shimmy and looking real awkward. wish i could have been there, i bet it was amusing for the participants and the observers alike.

Yea i enjoy it. I like taking them out. Last weekend we all watched Dark Knight know they want to see the new Star wars clone movie!
Yea guess belly dancing is kinda funny when a guy does it. The secret(for me) i guess is taking ones side at a time. But when a girl does it in a sense it is hypnotic.
Asmahan is one of my fav dancers.

QFT! My boyfriend got food stamps when he was living in Eugene during his second year of college. He worked at a restaurant and ate there so he spent his $60 a month on Doritos and cookies.
