http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/russia/2470310/Sexual-harrassment-okay-as-it-ensures-humans-breed,-Russian-judge-rules.html

Best part of the story:
"If we had no sexual harassment we would have no children," the judge ruled.

Time to move to Mother Russia, eh comrads?

It seems to be more deeply entrenched in that culture than in others. My elementary school had a lot of Russian immigrants that were students and the boys would constantly grab girls' asses and make a big point of standing on their desks and shouting things to female teachers and staff like "I don't have to listen to you because you're just a woman!"

hmmm...I'm interested to here Irina's take on this, being that she is in residence there and can give a personal account.

My boyfriend's rommate is russian and i've never seen him do anything i would term as sexual harassment, he does run through girls like woah...

he also seems to be under the impression I'm so stupid i can't figure out a dishwasher and that because i spend a lot of time there i should be doing dishes that i never use and contribute to making the household better despite not using any of their resources? I just broke it down to his personality and being a passive aggressive asshole rather than a cultural thing. Though another friend pointed out that he probably expects that a girl should be doing cleaning and house duties.

thats because 100% chicks in russia are atractive, imho. who isnt attracted to a woman that can boil potatos, has ample supply of beat juice, whore out for money when needed, and speak in that accent. plus they have this look....dunno, im hooked. its my fetish.

Irina's take on the matter.

i've been working here for 3 years. never, EVER, have i been made uncomfortable by my Russian male colleagues. maybe, it's because our top boss is a woman.
maybe, it's because i work with educated, free-spirited, driven, optimistic people.

my ENGLISH colleagues, on the other hand, seem to assume that since, say, an article in daily telegraph says that 100 per cent of Russian women have put up with sexual harrassment, it's ok to grab asses and expect any russian chick to just jump into bed/car/armchair/bathroom stall with them.
big disappointment it must've been for them, when girls didn't oblige.

my coworker used to be the only girl out of a group of 15 people.
she never had a problem with them. in fact, she learned a whole lot from their conversations and behavioural patterns.
they, in turn, were very protective of her.

now, Karen, about your roommate.
you see, i guess it's just common courtesy in Russia. when i go to someone's house -- i'm their guest. i'm intruding upon their space.
first of all, it's a tradition that a guest never, ever, comes empty-handed. you usually bring wine/cake. sometimes you can bring food.
then, we usually offer to help with the cleanup. when i'm at someone's house, and i drink tea/coffee/water/whatever, i get up from the table and offer to clean up after myself.
maybe, it's just me. i remember how i washed all of my friend's dirty dishes because she had to move out the next day, and had tonnes of them laying around the house.
and saying hello is a must, too.
so, i can kind of see where he's coming from. it's not because you're a girl. it's because he sees you, probably, as a full-fledged member of the household.

but back to topic at hand.
a large percentage of top managers in Russian banks/investment companies are foreigners. they have this view of Russian women as meat on high heels. and i've heard of stories.
and i won't rule out sexism, of course, it happens everywhere.
yet, in my experience here, i've never ONCE witnessed sexual harrassment of a Russian woman by a Russian man.
the other way around -- now, that's a different story. ;)

dude, in Russian schools they'd be eating that teacher's panties for lunch. 'cos she'd stuff them in their mouths to shut them up. :D

Not my roommate, Leigh's. The problem is that I DO chip in, i've done their dishes and put them away more than once. It all stemmed from my accidentally sticking a dirty cup in with a bunch of clean ones, which apparently means I have never once done the dishes. He however, cannot seem to wipe up the shit he left on the toilet seat, which is far more offensive to me than a dirty cup in with the clean cups. Though i admit he probably did not see it, just as i was unable to see the tiny clean light on a dishwasher that was wide open.

I've seen a lot of Russian and African people be very disrespectful to women.

I went to jr high with a lot of Russian kids. They smelled like burnt ass, some of them tried to cover it up with cheap cologne but what they really needed was a shower. Since everyone flipped them shit for smelling like crap they were fucking mean as hell to anyone who wasn't Russian.

While I was attending school for metal fab my instructor was a women. We would have all kinds of idiot Russian, African or otherwise EU people come in and treat her like she didn't know dick, even though she had been welding and doing metal fab for over 10 years.

They would end up fucking up their project and still be like "stupid women" when she would try to help them.

I've met some cool Russian/Euro people though, and some very very respectful Africans.

people are disrespectful and sexually harass each other.

its not specific to any demographic.

its probably much heavier weighted on the male side. but women definitely partake.

right.
i don't know what to tell you.
probably, that most people whom i've encountered in the US who were from the former USSR were
1. Ukrainian. but called themselves russian
2. exteremely uneducated.
3, came from very, very rural areas of the Western Ukrainian Lviv region.
4. fit the description you made above.
and, finally,
5. totally and completely unlike the people that you'd see in Russia today.

God, I love you, even though I still don't even know you... Is that harassment? I hope not.

I’m sure that some people are offended and paranoid by just knowing what is possible. I think the knowledge of good and evil and the realization that we are ‘naked’ is more than a tale and certainly more than relativistic morality.
