The Olympic Games represent the foolhardy allegance of the masses to their national slave masters who keep them in bondage and blinded to the systematic capitalist holocaust being waged against brown people across the globe by Haliburton in its neverending quest to rid the world of Islam while spreading Christianity throughout populations who live amongst the ashes of the formerly magestic rain forests which will soon house the displaced sweaty polar bears with big McDonalds arches stenciled on their coats which provides blood money that lines the coffers of the Jews who carried out 9/11 and not only want to eat your children but manipulate the military industrial complex to wage a holy war on the ozone layer.

I had to laugh while watching the people trying to bike in the rain.
The announcer was like "The oil in the rain is really effecting the roads" At least in London you wont have to worry about getting a weekend case of lung cancer.
Oh and did you see the Korean women ride her bike across the bike lanes knocking other bikers over, and then fly into the ditch? Just like an Asian women to change lanes and not signal...

*ahem* @ Boyd Man that is also not show jumping, that is three day eventing (a combination of dressage, cross country and show jumping), where the fences are solid and can be pretty big (imagine taking a solid fennce four feet high and five feet across at a gallop!) and falls like that are a common occurance. I have the last two summer olympic three day eventing shows on video, its my favorite to watch. I will buy this years as well (usually its a christmas present).

LOL, I know, I know. I was just having a laugh. I saw that picture this morning when I was checking up on the kiwi three day team. They're obviously not doing too well. I've been a big fan of the sport since Mark Todd won the first of his golds in LA in 84.
Sports I'm following this year - the indoor volleyball is pretty awesome. It's all the beauty and rhythm of basketball, but without the egos. Also, rowing. Saturday is going to be a big one for the black singlets. A couple of golds, if not more, I reckon.

He won by an incredible margin in the 200m, and broke a WR into a 1m/s headwind. He won by a greater margin than Phelps did in any race, and in none of his races did he ever look like anyone could beat him. He made every single other competitor look snailpaced. Phelp's WRs all came in a pool designed to be fast. Bolts WR's came on a track that's just the same as any other track. Sure Phelps won more races than Bolt, but if there were backwards and sideways and skipping track events, Bolt would probably have won those too.

Shut your trap, you strawman-making nincompoop.
To put it in quantitative terms, in the five individual events that Phelps won, his average margin of victory was 1% of his time in that event. Bolt won his medals with an average margin of 2.7% of his time.

Well, thanks for pointing out the obvious. Phelps may have won more medals, but he didn't dominate his competition in the way that Bolt did. Phelps surpassed Spitz's achievements, but they are pretty much of a similar level, at least in terms of a single Olympics. No-one has ever dominated the track sprints like Bolt has in Beijing.

That doesn't mean that I think that Bolt dominated Phelps, it means that Bolt dominated his competition to a much greater degree than Phelps did. In fact his winning margins were 2.7 times greater, proportionately, than Phelps'.
Here's a thought experiment: Canoeist X wins two gold medals by tiny margins. Kayaker Y wins one event by a huge margin, shattering a long standing WR. Who was more dominant?
seattle science
08-21-2008, 01:42 PM
What happened to quantitative terms? Haha.
Personally, I think Phelps and his domination of his competition with 8 gold medals is nothing compared to the Chinese domination in badminton. In womens doubles the Chinese won the gold by taking the last 15 points straight. Phelps nor Bolt come anywhere near approaching such greatness.
Boyd Main
08-21-2008, 01:52 PM
That's true. Likewise the Russian polevaulter who laid with a towel over her head while her competitors were toiling away, only to get up once almost everyone else had failed, and proceed to break her own world record for the 13th time.

Ok, let's forget medal counts. Look at how many races Phelps had to compete in and how close together some of them were. 8 golds are amazing, winning or moving on in that many rounds so close together is phenomenal.

quantity of medals in one Olympics means absolutely nothing... Phelps had more events that he COULD compete in...
lets look at someone like Ayumi Tanimoto in Judo... she has won EVERY one of her matches by Ippon (basically a Knockout for you non-judo illiterates) in the last two Olympics (Beijing and Athens)... for her work, it has only equaled to two gold medals... that's the max she CAN get... that, is equally impressive to anything Phelps has done... I guarentee she will be competing again in London, and more than likely she will continue to dominate... will Phelps?

OK, well there are athletes more dominant in their repesctive sports that can only win one or two. Get over it.

Phelps trained for the other meets, they are in the water but not the same, he has a great advantage because not a lot of the other sports have too much variety of contests within the same field. any of the runners could accomplish something similar, but there just not as deterimined as phelps. yeah, go phelps go. i think its over rated too, but he does have to put in more work to be good at each different meet, maybe not like the gymnists have to do, maybe more.

i'd argue that it's probably a lot 'easier' (don't misread my usage of that word) to be a specialist in 2 events, and thus dominate them, than to win 8 events.

Ex-sprinter Marion Jones moved from prison in Fort Worth to San Antonio
pending Sept. 5 release
FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) _ Former world athletics sprint champion Marion
Jones has been moved from a U.S. federal prison in Fort Worth and will serve
the remainder of her sentence in San Antonio.
The disgraced Olympian was sentenced to six months in prison in January
for lying to U.S. government agents about her doping and a check-fraud scam.
Jones also was ordered to do 400 hours of community service in each of the
two years following her release.
Federal Bureau of Prisons spokeswoman Traci Billingsley says Jones was
transferred to a community corrections center in San Antonio on Tuesday.
The Dallas Morning News reported Friday the transfer is part of the
process toward the Sept. 5 scheduled release of Jones. She entered prison in
early March.

Even funnier is that every single event in the Olympics is "form prescribed."
Also, fly is harder than freestyle. Walking is not harder than running. Analogy failure.

On your first point, are you sure? How did Dick Frosby do what he did if that's the case? And what exactly is the meaning of Freestyle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freestyle_swimming), then? (click the link if you're not sure)
On your second point, have you ever tried competitive walking? It's WAY harder than running - that is why there are judges following the racers around, because it's common for them to revert to the easier gait of running.
Rebuttal double failure. Keep it up and you might challenge Phelps for domination... in the event of FAIL.

Running is not form prescribed. It is as fast as a human can possibly go. You can run as funny as you wish. Same with shotput and javelin throw, although forms are preferred because of their practicality.
And with that, I will also say, that with Jamaica in 3rd place gold and total medals for track and field, is quite impressive for a tiny 3rd world country.
