Since my new career is directly involved with politics and because we've had a few of these discussions here in the politics forum of NWTekno, I decided to post this thread here...
Also, I hope to spur some conversation about the two major issues the new organization I represent is currently focused on, so bring on the responses all you conservatives. It should be good practice. :)
Well it's 2009, we have a new President and administration and a huge amount of issues which we must confront as a nation. Those who know me well, know that I am always talking about social justice issues. I am passionate about making the world a better place. Whether as a Boy Scout, a Marine, an HR professional in a community-based nonprofit, philanthropist, or even a DJ in the EDM industry, my life has been defined by service to a cause greater than my own self-interest. Accordingly, my new job is also a career change, a new perspective, and a new start at an old idea of service. I will be serving my new community of Seattle as a Community Organizer for Washington CAN, an organization currently working on moving the universal health care agenda forward and on developing awareness for immigration reform.
Prior to this election cycle, many people had never heard of the job title, Community Organizer. Thanks to our new President and oddly, Sarah Palin, the title of Community Organizer has gotten a lot more attention and recognition. Amongst all of the political maneuvering and posturing, Community Organizers have taken front stage in the national dialogue. This newly focused attention on social justice and those who work and fight to bring about positive change in our communities has inspired me to look for ways to join in such a noble and necessary fight.
During the election debates, I remember very clearly when the two remaining candidates were asked if health care was a right or a privilege. I remember sitting there in awe as I witnessed a major political candidate actually stand up before the American people and say that health care is a RIGHT!! I agree. A healthy citizenry is not just a social justice issue. Americans miss more work due to preventable illnesses than any other developed nation on the planet. Those missed hours of work or of industrial output, greatly decrease the productivity of the American workforce. So this is also an economic as well as a social justice issue.
I am excited to learn more about the logistics of organizing grassroots movements that effect social awareness and fight to bring about change in our society. This new job directly ties into my future goals of eventually being an Executive Director of my own non-profit which will be dedicated to serving homeless children and focused on providing musical therapies and music education. But I digress, that is an entirely different and much longer blog posting which I will save for another time.
My new career has excited me in ways which I have not felt in a long time. The people I have meet throughout the interview process are conscious, noble people who have dedicated their lives to community service. They are intelligent and considerate, yet all of them still are highly PASSIONATE about social justice so I believe my energies and professional ability will be of great use in moving this country and my new community of Seattle, forward in a direction which builds on the promise of "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness."
What will you do? The choice is yours all you have to do is make it.
