I had a lot of fun working this event, and was pleased with how well it sounded despite the booking being last-minute. If I'd seen the venue beforehand I would probably have brought more bass, but it turned out we had more than enough because the crowd was thin. Spazmunkee brought out his Tapcos, and I used them as fills. I think this is the first party where he's paired them with another system. I'm not sure how I feel about popping his cherry in a metaphorical sense, but stranger things have happened I suppose.

&drew played a really nice opening set, and some Reno DJs kept the party bumping until 6 in the morning. Meanwhile, the over-21 crowd who showed up alternated playing laser tag with enjoying an open bar (soft drinks spiked with well drinks). For those under 21, there were soft drinks and enough laser tag to get really thirsty! :)

I think attendance would have been better if the price was lower, if bus directions had been posted, and if there wasn't a $10 party at the skate barn on the same night. Any party at LaserQuest would have to cost a minimum of $35, because the promoter has to pay the arena $30 for everyone who comes through the door. This includes unlimited laser tag and is the same price as they charge the general public for admission. So, if the show was $35 the promoter would be paying for everything (sound, DJs, etc.) based on $5 per head. Just breaking even would require filling the venue to capacity and it'd have to be turned over once to profit.

Would this formula work? It's up to the electronic music community to decide, but mad props to Nate for taking the risk and making this happen. I know he lost his shirt on the show, but it was clear he had a lot of fun and so did everyone else. This is easily one of the most creative ideas I've seen in quite awhile.

NOTE TO DJs.: A few people could not play because they didn't show up for sound check and their specialized equipment glitched out. DJs, this is important: if you play on Serato, use effects processors, or do anything special in your performance (other than just bringing vinyl or CDs to play) there are additional procedures required. You will need to show up with all your stuff, bring your needles (promoters and sound techs don't always have a set you can use), and come to sound check so your friendly local sound tech can help you make sure everything works. Even if the promoter doesn't ask you to do this, you should be sure to find out when sound check is and show up anyway. Sound techs try really hard to solve problems on the fly, and we're very often successful, but our ability to divine miracles is occasionally limited. Unfortunately, luck wasn't on our side Friday.

It sucks when a promoter has to remind a dj to bring his own needles. Nobody has to remind a sax player to bring his reed or a drummer to bring his sticks. Back 2 the Basics.

Glad you made it work. Sounds like a lot of fun.

I really had a great time at this, lotsa friendly folks and
good times. The deejays from reno were tres awesome,
i've been listening the demos they gave me - rocking stuff
as well!

It was very laidback and interesting to play for folks in between
the laser tag games. Thanks for having me play nate, can't
wait to see what other craziness you have cooked up next!

i think thats a great idea but it would be up to djs and sound tecks to work for free or even chip in no open bar but a small cash bar and mabey consessions to cover the loss on the door. shit i had such a blast id be willing to give this another shot at 35 a head.
