PINCH DJ (Bristol)
Tectonic
Artist Link (http://www.myspace.com/tectonicrecordings)

Unofficial King of the Bristol dubstep scene. Phenomenal producer, international DJ, founder of the Tectonic and Earwax labels and host of the Subloaded and Dubloaded dances. As a producer, Pinch has released critically acclaimed records on some of the most important dubstep imprints, including Planet Mu, Soul Jazz and of coarse his own Tectonic label. Pinch is arguably the most important tastemaker in UK's vibrant dubstep community. Two of Tectonic's most celebrated artists (2562 and Martyn) have gone on to become two of the more influential dubstep producers outside of the UK.

DJG DJ (San Francisco)
NarcoHz / Noppa / Tube10 / Lo Dubs
Artist Link (http://www.myspace.com/djgsf)

Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, Dean J. Grenier A.K.A DJG landed in the world of Dubstep in 2007 with his first 12" "Shadow Skanking" b/w "Joyful Sound" on Narco.Hz. Immediate support on Rinse FM and in the clubs from DJ's like N-Type propelled DJG to the forefront of American dubstep producers early in his career. High-profile releases continued in 2008 with his track "Lower 8" released on Tes La Rok's Noppa label, and with his track "Bender”s selection as Pressing Issues 002 by the populace on dubstepforum.com. In total, DJG had 5 releases in his first year as a dubstep producer.

DJG's production style is richly melodic, emotive while full of groove and energy. Recognized early on for a more dubwise sound, DJG's recent productions have revealed an evolution in his music, getting deeper into bass-heavy, tech-drenched, soulful tracks like the much-anticipated February ‘09 release "Bunker" b/w "Apophenia" on Tube10 and the forthcoming "The Gate" b/w "Obsessed" on Lo Dubs. DJs ranging from Mary Anne Hobbs, N-Type, Joe Nice, Pinch, Headhunter, Skream, RSD, 2562, Djunya, Random Trio and many more have been supporting DJG's recent and forthcoming releases on labels Narco.Hz, Subway Recordings, Tube10, Lo Dubs, amongst others.

MOLDY DJ (Portland, Maine)
Heavy Pressure / 'earwax
Artist Link (http://www.myspace.com/moldy)

Fundamentally bass-heavy, dark and meditative, the dubstep sound can be described as a virulent musical strain.* Seasoned listeners of everything from dub reggae, hip hop and jazz to jungle, techno and breakbeat have been infected. Portland, Maine native DJ and producer Selector Moldy is operating on the frontline. A veteran DJ of over a decade, in 1998 he pioneered 24/7 internet radio with Factory188.com in Portland, Maine.* In Boston, he cut his teeth playing dubs of his original productions at the mainstay Elements; in New York City, he held residencies at the Offshore Recordings’ party Push and staple Konkrete Jungle.* He is a frequent guest at New York's legendary monthly Dub War. Organizing a series of parties in Manhattan called Lurkery, he introduced the Big Apple to talent from the UK like DJ Pinch, DJ Distance and Headhunter as well as domestic talent like Grapes and Venez.* Each event garnered an editor's pick in Time Out New York.* Bringing it full circle in 2008, he established the first regular night dedicated to the dubstep sound in Portland, Maine: Heavy Pressure Night.

Moldy has shared the stage with influential drum & bass and dubstep artists including Adam F, Breakage, Digital, Dara, Dieselboy, Pinch, Distance, Headhunter,, N-Type, Mala, Quest, Silkie, Plastician, Skream, and The Bomb Squad
Between gigs he keeps his nose to the grindstone in the studio, recognized internationally as one of the most prominent American dubstep producers. In 2006 he formed Heavy Pressure Recordings.* His Windmill Dub/The Black Forest (Part 1) was released in December 2006, followed by Grapes' The Sheep of Lords/Rabbit Stew in May 2007.* Moldy's highly anticipated Cod & Chips/Numbers Dub will see vinyl release in 2008, distributed worldwide by Load Media. Released March 2008 on UK label ‘Earwax, Glory/Glory Dub (EAR006), featuring Brooklyn based Dub War resident MC Juakali, has been smacking dance-floors in the US and UK alike, with support from UK DJs Pinch, Distance, Joker, Peverelist, Plastician, Cyrus, and Baltimore’s DJ Joe Nice. Forthcoming on Deep Medi Musik, Through the Rain and The Void are two tracks bound to make an impression as the first American releases on this lauded UK label. No dance floor is safe.

KJ SAWKA Live (Seattle)
Hospital / Violence
Artist Link (http://www.myspace.com/kjsawka)

10 years ago -when drum n'bass was very near it's zenith in popularity, Kevin Sawka was playing in prominent rock bands in Seattle (grunge was huge)- someone played him an LTJ Bukem track, and, as he says, It scorched my brain. I dropped everything, and focused solely on how to recreate that on the drums. He heard Dieselboy as well. More brain-scorching. He started writing utilizing the style, and honed his new concepts and approach to the drums. He debuted the new sound in the band 94th Street, a band years ahead of it's time: a pop drum'n'bass band with a sense of humor. The word about Kevin was out: there's a drummer in Seattle who's performing jungle and drum'n'bass beats on acoustic drums, what was once thought to be absolutely impossible by any human. And here Kevin was making it look easy -like watching a jazz drummer who's said to play like water flowing,Kevin instead was doling out insanely syncopated d'n'b.

Artist Link (http://www.dopelabs.com/)

Since emerging in 1995, internet radio has revolutionized the broadcasting industry, bringing opportunities to new ideas and new music that otherwise would have no mass outlet. Many DJs and producers of emergent underground styles of music have embraced webcasting over the years by starting up internet radio stations and establishing shows in order to gain exposure for their sound and promote themselves as artists.

For dubstep, one such station is Dubstep.fm. At the helm is Dubstep DJ and internet radio champion, DopeLabs. Officially on the air since April 10th, 2007, Dubstep.fm is one of the only sites broadcasting dubstep at 192 kbps and boasts the highest average numbers of listeners as well as the most listeners at any one time for a dubstep web broadcast. DopeLabs has deep knowledge of the genre, deep record bins and even deeper sounds. Here is a vinyl DJ that has access to tracks from the global dubstep underground and can weave them to play off each other, shifting from movement to movement without ever losing any momentum.

Andy Seaver grew up in the state of Maine, on the eastern coast of the United States. He studied music at Wesleyan University in Connecticut, and finally moved out to Seattle, Washington, to explore his West Coast intuitions. His approach is to create electronic music through the manipulation of recorded noises. Although this €œmusique-concrete€ approach to production is certainly nothing new, Andy finds it exciting to disguise ordinary sounds through, primarily, combination filtering and pitch distortion. The low diesel drone of an idling truck can become the pulsing pad of harmony. In addition to releasing his last album, Foundation, in 2007, he also produced the score to the lauded film Police Beat.

OBELUS Live (Seattle)
basskamp
Artist Page (http://www.dbfestival.com/?p=1635)

When Minneapolis guitarist Jason Goessl met Seattle drummer Adam Pessl in 2002, it seemed only right they should form some sort of musical pairing. Though trained and skilled in traditional live music performance, Jason and Adam were both fans of electronic music, and sought to forge a link between the two cultures. Tenuous though the initial connection may have been, a partnership was formed and soon became the ever-evolving experimental project that is Obelus.

After their first shows, Obelus was invited to take up a number of weekly nights and later hosting Basskamp (2003-2005), a weekly electronic night that featured a live blend of DJs, laptop artists, and more traditional musicians. Eventually, the Basskamp family became its own small record label, circulating lovingly burned CDR€™s of the artists and friends that regularly performed at the weekly, including a remix CD of earlier Obelus tracks reinterpreted by local producers and electronic musicians. Obelus has spent the last few years constantly writing and recording, expanding their musical scope, focusing more intently on refining the minutae of their studio production with software instruments, and experimenting with incorporating bits of manipulated voice tracks into both their production and live performances.

Most recently, Obelus teamed up with vocalist Caitlin Sherman to compose and record an original track, €œStationary,€ for Peloton Musique€™s highly conceptual debut album. Not only was €œStationary€ composed almost entirely of sampled bicycle sounds, it was the band€™s first track to follow a standard verse/chorus format and feature a fully realized lead vocal. The interweaving of Sherman€™s plaintive vocals and sharp lyrics with Obelus€™ glitchy atmospheric framework proved to be a perfect match, and five more songs featuring her voice and musical input were quickly completed. A full album with Sherman as official Obelus lead vocalist is in the works.

Aw.... y'all know him, right? You ought to.... Patrick Haenelt (electrosect) is a man you ought to thank, if you love the Seattle electronic world. He runs Oscillate, a Seattle monthly event; focusing on left field and abstract electronic music. Oscillate has been running for almost 5 years and with it's loyal fan base, it shows no signs of stopping. His company, Sensory Effect, puts on loads of amazing shows all over the city, and Patrick is a spokeperson for and strong supporter of our city's fantastic pile of great music. He has produced shows for international artists as diverse as Modeselektor, Amon Tobin, Jega, Ellen Alien,The Herbalizer, kid606, Plaid, and many others. As Electrosect, Patrick also produces great electronic music and has been doing so for over 15 years. Utilizing various styles with a glut of intuition, he guides you along the course of his tracks ranging from dark and heady, to sparse and beautiful. For the 2009 Decibel Festival, Patrick will be playing a live ambient set to compliment an already heady lineup.

SNAP'KRAKL'POP Live (Seattle)
Sensory Effect
Artist Link (http://www.djskyler.net/)

Djs Snap, Krakl and Pop, besides being brothers from the same mother, each ramble down often divergent musical paths; their respective independent projects focusing on low-slung deep tech-house, rangy intelligent hip-hop and lush minimal techno. These individual trajectories have many points of mutual interest however. This intimate collaboration highlights their areas of sonic intersection within a wide range of deep, multi-layered down/mid-tempo, dubby bubbles and hip-hop textures; all washed over with vocal samples rooted in pop-culture and a variety of found sounds. Snap€™Krakl€™Pop is proud to play Decibel for the first time together in the Little Red Bistro.

As the dub sound spread from Jamaica to the UK and on to the rest of the planet, the genre twisted and mutated into a loose and often dysfunctional family of subgenres, from dubstep to drum and bass to experimental IDM. In fact, all electronic music owes a loud shout-out to dub, from its focus on the bass to vocal sampling to the idea of stripping extraneous elements down to the minimal. Dub lives on in a thousand miscreant children, all of whom will continue to evolve, mutate, and produce offspring that will perhaps become genres in their own right.

At dB in duB Afterhours we celebrate the family that has grown up influenced by the heady sounds of daddy dub. Straight outta Bristol comes Pinch, a passionate pioneer and influential tastemaker for the dubstep sound in the UK. He is known for fusing the genres heavy basslines with techy and melodic subtleties, as well as with reggae, dancehall and world music- this producer knows no bounds. DJ G landed on RinseFM with his first-ever 12 dubstep release, and his devotion to the deeper, more soulful side of the genre is winning him widespread acclaim all over the world. Rolling in next from the frontline of dubstep is Moldy, the Original Fungalist. This mover and shaker is one of the most prominent US producers in the genre; his club nights, radio station and choice releases are making a massive impact on electronic arts culture, particularly on the East Coast. Adding to the lineup is local Seattle favorite KJ Sawka, whose live drum and bass performances on acoustic drums set to electronic triggers make dance floors doubt their eyes, and move their feet.

Next door the lounge will be indulging the weird side of the dub family, with artists whose far-out approach to music makes them avant-garde oddballs in a family of freaks. ndCv experiments on sound, manipulating noises in the most nontraditional way and bumping them back disguised and distorted. Evolving in front of you next is Obelus, who forms a link between traditional live performances and electronica to create musical conversations as laptop meets improv. Electrosect runs in with wild eyes from the left field; this enthusiastic promoter and unmatched supporter of the Seattle community uses his keen intuition to guide listeners into the deeper and more abstract realms of electronic music. Finally the family meets at the sonic intersection of dubby midtempo and hip hop textures with SnapKraklPop, three brothers whose found sounds and interesting approach to musical divergence just might be the next offspring of the dub revolution. - Shilo Urban
