we took a Standard Auditorium, and decked it out like crazy! Much love to Peter, Dj Wang, Joe, Christian & Josh, Neko and Tyler for all the hard work on stage!
over 500 kids showed up to this dance, and they really seemed appreciative of all our hard work.

that's pretty rad and is a testament to how many kids today are into EDM. That shit would NEVER have happened when I was in HS.. and that was Chicago, where everyone loved house music.

Wow I thought this was going to be a joke when I clicked on the thread but you actually played a pseudo-rave at Bellevue High School. Times are certainly a lot different than when I was in high school...just a mention of the word rave had panties in a twist. Were you able to play rave music or was it more of a top40 with a slice of Daft Punk operation?

ANTHONY, OMG!!! EPIC WINNINGS WERE HAD!!!
Seriously, thanks for having me out. That was WAY too much fun... The BHS students were eating everything up, from the big sound, Tyler's HOT lasers, the visuals, the decor, and the bangin' tunes!! And the best part?? They were all having good CLEAN fun and THEY WERE WEARING CLOTHES! @_@ I had a great time hanging out with Tyler and Joe (and whoever else managed to find their way up to the makeshift booth). I was questioned by the chaperones a few times... They thought I was a student >.<.... Other than that, the night was absolutely fantastic. PURE FUN! I had a great view of the kids' reactions as they walked in the room... Typically it went like "HOLY SHIT!!!!!!" Then they'd try to eat the lasers and all was well.
This was a FANTASTIC idea. Probably one of the most pleasant events I've done visuals for in a while. Thhaaaaaanks Anthony and BHS!

Seriously though, Promoters can you take note? You guys have the power to enforce that CLOTHING be worn at your shows unless you're some 35 year old child molester who encourages minors to strut around in their bras and underwear.
Bring some style and fashion back into the scene.

haha halter tops and phat pants!
i would love to see this happen, and would normally be the first to jump on board, but the kids have the choice not to go, which means months of planning result in you losing tons of money.
on a good note...

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ THIS. I have talked to enough people lately who refuse to go to raves because of under age nearly naked teens that I'm pretty sure promoters are losing MORE money by not enforcing a dress code than they would be if they just made the kids put an acceptable shirt on.
I fully support what you guys did here. I think it's a GREAT way to get kids involved with dance music culture in a structured environment, and I would love to see this happen at more high schools. These kids are the future of our scene. I really think that if more kids are involved in an environment like this one, we can start to see a difference in the adult events as well. Kids learn "what's cool" by the experienced people putting on the show, and peer pressure conforms them to the ideal.
I for one would be excited to be involved with something like this, and I hope others can use this as a launching point to get more stuff like this happening in the NW.

The fact that one of the most conservative high schools in the Seattle metropolitan area hosted a high school pseudo-rave is kind of blowing my mind right now.

hahaha. this is crazy.
it's weird to see this happen at a high school...
i live down in the vancouver area and went to a high school in the middle of no where, where you got suspended for saying the word "shit" and i just graduated last year.
mad props!
i bet this shit was sick... and you probably recruited a whole new group of ravers... good stuff eh!

it was all the elements of a good production without all the drugs and nakedness.
the chaperons are always the people who really watch out for any possible thing to go worng, and they were ecstatic about the event.
"grinding" is one of the biggest problems in school dances and is strictly forbidden now. everyone in charge at the dance agreed that its impossible to grind when everyone was jumping up and down all night. :)
this was a great night, the police were present, parents were present, and a lot of kids really got to enjoy electronic music in a very safe environment.
oh and on a side note.. Bellevue kids LOVE electro, Jumpstyle and drum and bass. FYI hahaha

This is such a great thing to hear. I really love that these kids have a safe place to become involved. If more kids had their own events, they could party safely without being out all night doing god knows what while wearing next to nothing. Young minds are so impressionable, and this is such a good way to impression them with the RIGHT activities instead of turning them loose with less than sincere individuals and allowing our scene to become more corrupted. Then when they're adults they will be better prepared for what they're going to face on their own, and hopefully the trends they picked up at these types of things will stick and we'll see an evolved raver come out of it.
For a long time I've been rolling around in the back of my head an EDM workshop for minors, where they can learn about music genres, the basics to recognizing a good DJ vs a shitty one, some history of electronic music, and some fun dance moves, like popping and liquid, or shuffling, to really help them become more involved, instead of just going "here take these drugs, isn't this fun?" I really believe this type of thing can bring about a more honest scene, if the honest promoters work hard to educate the next generation to avoid the shady things that are dragging the whole thing down. Something like this can really increase the integrity of our scene, just by a more educated raver who expects something better.
I just think something needs to change, and the only way it's going to happen is to fully consider how these kids ultimately are the ones who will change it. Getting people on board though has been... challenging.

Just on a side note and im not trying to defend or encourage the nakedness but as someone who just works in venues and doesn't really even dance much I can understand why a lot of these kids show up pretty much naked or end up that way by the end of the night and its mainly due to the lack of ventilation in our venues... of coarse having 700 people dancing is gonna get a bit hot but there has been times where ill be on stage producing a laser show and I'm pouring with sweat and the only movements ill be doing are controlling multiple computers... So id say if you plan to address the issue of a dress code your gonna have to address the issue of venue ventilation / temperature... Just another reason why i prefer my outdoor shows... :P

while this is a noteworthy point (as well as an argument that i've heard MANY times) i disagree for the most part. i remember going to plenty of parties (when i was much younger) in some sort of mini skirt and a tank top and i NEVER had problems overheating. i actually find it more difficult to stay cool on stage under those god awful lights than out on the dance floor where i have the option of escaping for a few minutes. i'm sure a lot of people can say the same... stripping down to your bra and undies is just an excuse to look like a prostitot. i know there are a lot of promoters in california that enforce dress codes, such as no bikinis, booty shorts, lingerie, etc, and they have plenty of success... i think doing the same thing here would cause a fuss. the transition period would probably be rough... who wouldn't be butt hurt if they couldn't show off their fancy underpants and neon zebra bra's???!?!?!?!!
:P
regardless of where we stand on this debate, which i'm sure could go back and forth and back and forth, it was incredibly amazing to see SOBER kids rocking out with their clothes on!!!
also, i think dnb blew their minds.

I know I can.
As a female, I have never, EVER, in all my years of partying, felt the need to strip down to my bra and undies. I usually wore big baggy UFO type pants, which actually kept me just as cool as nothing at all. They don't really touch the skin, and the air flows through them (because, ZOMG, they're made to do that), so they don't create excess heat. Short swishy skirts have the same effect. The swishing action pushes the air so that it flows instead of just being sticky and hot. If I get hot from dancing I just go outside for a bit until I'm cold and then I go back in. Considering the amount of girls I see who are outside half the time talking to their friends, peeing behind cars in the parking lot, and smoking, overheating can't POSSIBLY be an issue that they can't deal with so much that they need to dress like a skank.
Now, that's not to say that venues don't need to have good circulation. People are hot either way, whether they're dancing naked or not, and those DJ components and lights and lasers and visual projectors are also VERY hot. Temps can rise very fast, and it's not only unbearable, but dangerous. Promoters really need to put more stock into considering this when they're choosing a venue. I mean, really... hot sweaty ravers stink. Let's keep them cool and the air circulated. Raver funk is never fun. ;)
