New Year's Ball - [PDX] - {12.31.2009}

ummm, looked like a good party for the 30 minutes that I was there before it got shut down... an interesting venue, good decorations, decent sound, a metric fuck ton of people, pretty good lineup of mostly nw's locals... what sucked was the long-ass line to get into the main venue, which isolated the breaks stage outside, and it took us a half-an-hour standing in rain to get inside of the building because it reached capacity - after our $25 admission was paid, mind you - and we were lucky to finally get in 2 minutes before midnight... shortly after we got in and checked out the party, it got promptly shut down by fire marshalls and the police... what a fuckin' tease !!! luckily, there were a number of other events and house-parties going on in town, so I hope that everyone was able to finish celebrating the night propa... happy new year's, everybody!

Anyways, I heard Jak got punched by some thug kid. I think maybe this underground music and underground culture should maybe head more underground. Thats just my opinion, but it seems like certain parties are getting crowds of lame highschool kids just looking to get fucked up and cause trouble.
I think these days kids are all missing the point of this whole thing. Its up to us to not put up w/ bullshit and set a good example. I would like to see more of that.
HOWEVER, it was NYE and things get crazy and it also brings the randoms out. Seems like every New years there is always some sort of drama.

Regardless of that, the lineup was pretty rad and I wish I could have been there to see my friends throwing it down. Its a shame that 2 of the biggest parties in PDX got shutdown by the man.
I am not digging this whole crackin down thing and I REALLY hope this is not going to happen to future parties that I wish to attend.

Steph and I had a great time while it lasted. I never seen the old church look so good. The promoters did a really good job. They hired plenty of security which should have did better with crowd control. It sucks that it got closed down really early. 2nd show in a row that I did lights or lasers at and the show got closed down. The scene in Portland is getting alot bigger now. We really need a two room venue that can hold 1000 people.

Thank you everyone for all the good vibes during the night. And I'm sorry I forgot your name but thank's again for the 5 dollar tip. It's not everyday that one of the light guys gets a tip. Or at least not money. :eek: This made have been the last light show I do. I think my light rig has sold. Going spend all the money into my high power lasers which is what I really want to do. Too much stuff for this old guy to set-up and tear-down.

See everyone at Express Yourself 2 and Alititude. I get to bring out my big full color lasers for those one's. :D

So yeah the church was looking SWEET that last night! Packed full or colorful ravers, lasers, and decoration. Music was great as well. I was really liking the way the main stage was in the middle of the room rather then on the elevated area across from the bathrooms (which turned into an awesome hang out and dance area).

Gotta say tho I was pretty pissed off while waiting in line for an hour in the cold rain for the door to get organized. Pretty sure only reason they were being so anal up front was to insure no one got in for free. Whatever, it's a business in itself.

What was with the bathrooms getting closed down? Someone told me it was to make all the ravers have to pay for more water instead of getting to refill their water bottles in the bathroom. I really hope that wasn't the case because that would be simply disgusting. Maybe some overflow or something, meh.

As far is the party getting closed down: Obviously it happens. The thing that bothered me was that there were hundreds of ravers waiting in the cold for an hour + only to pay $25 and get kicked out in under 3 hours all because the owner was running some sort of unauthorized bar upstairs (or so i was told). Hopefully the trend wont continue, that's been 2 parties shut down out of the last 3 I have attended.

Anyways big ups to those who did their best to make things go smoothly.

and to anyone being irresponsible I just gotta say that your actions don't only effect you but also those around you.

All breaks in the tent, nothing inside the building... sorry.
I'll upload small segment (one week) of six hour and place a link in this thread.

BTW, I also got pristine digital audio recording of the entire venue before it was shot down. All you DJ's can have a copy of quality recording for the asking. Joe, Vize and all of you who played.

Man, it was one helluva party. The promoters should have done their job a bit better about capacity. I know many people were pissed and with good reason. Next time hold this elsewhere and think about people standing in the rain and cold :)

DJ's were fantastic and the lights were just perfect to create a nice mood for the occasion. Future promotions/promoters should take a note as how this illuminated, (on DJ's) so nice videos an pictures can be taken. You'll see in my video as how cool this event was. Congratz to the light, sound people and DJ's who pulled this off to be a good memory until the next time :)

I do believe the main reason the event got closed down was the bar upstairs. Which sucks because the promoters did not have anything to do with that. Yes it was overcrowed in the Hallway but that could have been fix. Plenty of room in the tent so they should have made the hallway exit only and to get in you should have had to walk around the building and go in the side door. They had a least 10 security guards there so it should have happen.

well first and formost i like everyone else had a great time intill it got shutdown.I was apart of setup and all that crazyness,and let me tell you everyone was working there ass off to get this put up in a quick but descent matter.I feel for the people that had to stand out in line for ever and get rained on(as i was under the tent being dry and not soaked.

I had a great time i got to dance a good bit of the show,before it got way to packed and i just ended up hanging out in the breaks area wich was outside.Towards the end of the night,well when the authorites decided that they needed to shut us down i was just going to sit in the main area inside the church and wait for all the shit to fly wich it did.

Yeah it was sick till it got shut down 30 mins into my set! I was stoked to play the first set of the new year and the vibe was definetly inside! Much thanks to all the kids in the DNB room that were bugging the fuck out. Shit was awesome till the Po po came and wrecked shop. Party was prettty sick up until that point, and had so much potential...Russ, hope to finish that set for you and all the other kids that were in that drum and bass room....shit was off the meatrack. Oh well, still ended up having one hell of a new year anyway.... much love guys, hope this doesn't discourage you. Shit happens, just learn from it.:D

Yeah, that was a shocking turn of events. This kid was going nutz in the hallway as we were trying to exit. Dude was pushing and yelling and pretty much trying to start a stampede. I tried to get him to stop, which in fact had the opposite effect. A good reminder that there is no reasoning with idiots. I will say that in 13 years of playing parties I've never seen anything like it. If I ever see this guy or his buddies at another event you can be assured I'll be asking the promoter to give them the boot.

Well, this show was really going off prior to the big shutdown. Thanks to everyone who worked so hard to make it happen, sorry you had to get shut down on this one. Until next time....

Portland is super cliquesh. But we do have a great dj scene, if you're into it. And great punk bands, if you're into it. And great hip-hop, if you're into it. And great jazz, if you're into it. So I think that Portlands techno scene will always be around, with change of course, but with a clique of it's own to support itself in what ever forms.
