This show exceeded all of my expectations, both in the house and backstage.

Going into this, I didn't really have a good idea of what to expect; I was booked fairly late in the planning stages. I've never been to a Skunky Beats show, although I've worked with some of the promoters before. All solid folks, and they had a really solid crew. This is important. The difference between a great show and a comedy of errors is the crew you're working with, and the attention they pay to the details that matter. There was a solid security and staffing plan for every area of the show all night, and the staff was rotated into different areas throughout the evening so they stayed fresh. The promoters also fed the crew--something all good promoters do before a show. Appropriate attention was paid to fire code, including occupancy signage. Everything was properly permitted and laid out.

I really like the venue and hope to work there again (despite a nasty flight of steps, complicating load-in and load-out). Concrete walls, a roll-up garage door, and graffiti murals everywhere lending a very industrial, underground feel. Probably because it is both industrial and underground! Room for two stages with a huge covered smoking area on the rooftop. It's even legal! There are occupancy permits and fire sprinklers! And the biggest problem I have in any venue, getting enough power to run the sound, wasn't a problem. No shortage of power in this space with plenty of circuits to keep everyone (and the sound system) happy. I had enough circuits not to oversubscribe any of them, and the power was unexpectedly clean. No hum, no problems, no blown breakers, the music never stopped all night, and the show started right on time--just the way I like it. Good crews and good facilities make all the difference.

The lighting designer brought in one of the highest quality lighting rigs I've ever seen in Seattle, tens of thousands of dollars worth of equipment, using up an entire 50 amp 3 phase circuit (split out with a spider box provided by the venue). There were enough lasers to down the starship Enterprise, a top-notch advanced lighting controller, and an incredibly high quality projector for visuals. I was really, really blown away by the quality; lighting is a detail that is often overlooked at shows. Promoters tend to hang up some Christmas lights and maybe put up some cheap American DJ lights from Guitar Center, and call it good. Lighting keeps a dance floor moving--combined with the music, it brings essential energy, flow, and symmetry elements. I hope to work with this lighting crew again; they were top-notch and very professional.

Special K's performance was, for me, the highlight of the evening. He produces his own tracks and played almost exclusively his own music. Professional through and through, it was a real pleasure working with him and even more of a pleasure hearing him play. The tracks he played had an early '90s feel, raw around the edges, a vibe that was perfectly suited to the space. I'm sure this was carefully planned; Special K walked the venue the day before his set to get a feel for the place and this really showed in his set. Although he is from Miami, his set belonged - in that space, in that time, nothing could have been more perfect.

I've never previously worked with Wheelz or his crew, but was really, really impressed with his set--4am and the crowd was nowhere near ready to leave. Who else can keep a dance floor absolutely packed all the way to the end? He is very professional, as most DJs of his caliber are, but most DJs don't have as large a crew as he requires. It gets crowded backstage and there is a lot going on, and I was really pleased with their overall professionalism and attention to detail. Nobody was ever in the way, and they were all 100% focused on doing their jobs--exactly as it should be. Kudos, guys--a great crew makes a great DJ even better. :)

OK - enough about the crew, the DJs, and behind the scenes. To the *ahem* 499 MAXIMUM FIRE OCCUPANCY crowd, and I'm sure there were no more than 499 of you... you were awesome! Such a good vibe, with nearly everyone dancing and so many smiles. No hazard zones of cuddle puddles; the overwhelming majority of attendees were present, engaged, and respecting themselves, the music, and one another. PLUR can be a tired cliche, or it can be real, magical and beautiful. The latter was on display last night--and you are what makes all of the hard work worth it!

Overall, I'm really happy to have been a part of this. Solid crew, happy crowd, and great music. These tired old bones will be going to work exhausted on Monday, and it's so totally worth it I can't wait to do it again. :)

I too will get to a more detailed review at a later date, seeing as how sleep is beckoning me. I was the smaller of the two guys from alaska, the one with the mohawk. I had a fuckin awesome time tonight. Enough fun to make me contemplate moving to Seattle. But I must now sleep.

This shit was fuckin outrageous! My friends and I toggled between both the Wake and Bake stages just basking in the beats. Wheelz was the certainly epic at the end of the show. I'm just glad I was able to get VIP tickets when we rolled in and surpassed the hour long line. I definitely count myself lucky.

Message to the Skunky Beats crew --> well done *tip hat*...well fuckin done!

Yay for Seattle. you should move here! Seattle loves AK transplants, its still green but OMG people actually live here! :D neat rite?

Yes- this was a friggin RAVE people.

I really liked the vibes @ this party, and for once I didnt feel mega ackward @ an all ages party (I am decidedly over 21, and @ this party felt only moderately to mildly awkward) people seemed pretty friendly compared to other all ages events ive attended in the Seattle/SoDo area. The venue is awesome, all the graffs on EVERY wall are beautiful. if there is basic tagging that isnt too pretty to look @, it is easily overshadowed by the amazing oversized pieces on the walls there. I think the building itself just has good energy, however "hippy dippy" that may sound (I mean, it is an old brewery. AND theres coffee.. yum! coffee-beer vibes).
I am glad that there are parties going on there once again :) Its got a good layout; you could actually walk around and there was lots of free outdoor smoking space. lots of people were gettin down and dancing most of the night, the crowd was going crazy for Special K! it was cool to see lots of people standing/dancing, the dance:cuddle puddle ratio was pretty darn good! I'll never understand a persons motivation to go to rave with a blanket and lay on the floor when theres such amazing music to dance to being blasted.

overall it was a really solid enjoyable night, really great DJs with bumpin' tunes, nice visuals, respectful ravers and event staff. no out of control drama resulting in cops. the party didnt end early, and no one was turned away from the door (I dont think, it was crackin!). Was a fun night, got to meet some awesome new people, a few nwtekno pals and saw some familiar faces. I also saw lots of smiles throughout the night which was nice.

the lighting and hueg laser were pretty amazing, I really liked the long tube black lights on either side of the stage. the laser with all the crazy designs on the wall was also pretty  fabulous.
what a great usage of the Tully's space, I cannot wait to see what skunky beats has in store for snoochy boochies in april! wooot. big ups to Skunky Beats! :D

if you guys have pics/video from the show will U share links? plzkthx.

This was by far the best rave I have ever been to. But seeing as how the only raves I have been to have been in alaska. The line was fuckin ridiculous, and I had a scare when I got to the front of the line, because as soon as I stepped up, they told everyone that they were at capacity. I was about to get angry, having flown down from Ak just for this party. But then it all got sorted out and everyone got in.

As soon as I walked into the venue I was blown away by everything. The vibe, the beats, and the people just all clicked. It was great meeting a bunch of seattleites and I look forward to partying with you guys again in the not too distant future. Jimni and Ian K crushed on the decks together, and Wheelz at the end sent me to fucking space, Hardstyle for life fuckers.

Big ups to Skunky Beats for throwing this epic party, it is one that I will never forget. And thanks to all the DJ's for comin down and throwing it all down on the decks. And to all you crazy fuckers that I hung out with and danced with, thanks for making this a fitting end to my seattle experience. But alas, I must now get ready to head to the airport and fly back up to alaska.

this party was so beautiful, i think i might cry~ i won't go into detail because i'm lazy, but the music was bumping, staff was bumping, everything was pretty much perfect. the vibe was so thick i couldn't even see past 5 or 6 feet in front of me!!! the only problems i think there really were were with the bathrooms i think. maybe we should get 2 port-a-potties next time? I had an amazing time!!! Thanks for having us out (Stay Safe Seattle) it was a good party to booth.

I also ran around taking some pictures too. I am all done editing them already, i just need to watermark and upload so check back at taptapproductions.com often :)

The venue was by FAR the coolest venue i have ever been to. I really hope there are more events thrown there.

The turnout...WHAT?! FUCKING HELL it was packed!!! That turnout was nuts! :) Glad to see Skunky Beats getting some proper love! Can't wait till Snoochie!

I was the larger guy from Alaska, and this was a blow my mind rave. It was definitely worth the trek from the frigid north. I was quite enthralled with the light shows. The lighting was brilliant and kept the crowd with the music. If I make it back to the Northwest I'll be looking up upcoming events. I need some pictures when you all have them so I can share the love.

I had a fucking amazing time! Love the venue (but I'd love it more in June w/o the standing water on the patio, but regardless still rad!), the graffiti that was being finished up as the party started was SICK!

Favorite sets of the night definitely are tied by Aksion/Aaron Simpson and Ian K/Jimni Cricket... all four are hands down fucking fantastic locals, they threw down like champs and I was in love!

The turnout was more than I expected but there was good vibes all around, I think everyone really enjoyed themselves and it showed! I hope to see more big things happening with this venue this time around, and more big things from Skunky Beats! MAD LOVE!

Oh and thank you to everyone who wished me a happy early birthday, it was an awesome way to kick off my celebrations :)

I am completely blown away. The compliments I have read on this review thread so far are wonderful, thank you. I feel priviliged to be a part of the scene here in Seattle.

First of all i'd like to thank everyone who came out to help make this event a success; thank you VERY much for your support. Rest assured we will continue to deliver the best quality shows possible.

The DJ's were amazing. I only had a chance to see just a little bit of each of you due to the busyness of the night but what I saw made me very happy. We booked all high caliber dance floor smashing DJ's for this event and they most definitely did not disappoint.

I want to thank Orca sound and Muvment lighting for the spectacular main stage audio visual stimuli. The presentation was top notch. Its always nice to work with people as knowledgeable and professional as yourselves. Shout out to Chris from Nth Degree Creative for the yummy laser and to Yuba from Foxfire f/x for the sick outdoor visuals.

BIG ups to Neverending Whomp for providing the superior sound for the second stage. The Skunky Fam appreciates all of the effort you put into this event.

Thanks to all of the staff for your hard work and friendly attitudes during the event. Everything went very smoothly and it wouldn't have been possible without your help.

I'm glad everyone enjoyed the venue as much as I did. What a perfect locale for a party. We hope to have more events here in the near future.... and yes next time two honey buckets. :)

Lastly, I want to thank the City of Seattle (SPD, SFD and the city planning department) for being so helpful and friendly during the permit process to make this event possible. It's great to live in such a forward thinking city.

If you enjoyed this event, look out for Snoochy Boochies 5! April 17th 2010!

The night had been particularly restless, in fact my cursed body clock
shifted me awake at the uneasy 5am hour. I don't know where to hit
snooze on a body clock, I imagine it involves clobbering yourself with
something heavy though. I normally sleep-in the day of a party,
however today I had to work. I got most of the way to work with
Ms.Paprika, then went the long lazy bus ride to redmond. "Well Andrew",
you say to the computer screen for some weird reason, "It's impossible
NOT to sleep on a long Sound Transit route, it's the bus equivalent of
Ambien". Oh, well, Mr.Weird-Screen-Talking-Thread-Reader I did not
sleep at all. I certainly didn't sleep at work either. When i'm up and this
cranky, my catchphrase is actually "Forfucksake". It actually comes out of
my mouth more than breathing on most mondays and even more when
i'm working on a Saturday and even more when my body knows that a
party is coming.

Fast-forward a bit, as the picture goes by in double-time you'll see a bunch
of costco trips and a million cases of water up a million stairs and a crazy school
bus full of equipment up an impossibly narrow ramp and me peeing (ignore
that part) and here we are. We walk back in to see that Elissa n' Alaina have come
up from Oly. I stand for a second, then have a paper plate full of mashed potatoes
with gravy and vegetarian meatloaf handed to me. Leading up to any party, you get
lots of things ready. Things go wrong, things change, but some things just fall into place.
I call this "party karma". It's a glimmer of glowsticks on the horizon of a sometimes
unsure and stressful desert of preparation. It lets you know you're on the way.
This cereal infused meatloaf was that sign. A tasty sign I then ate, something you shouldn't
do in a desert by the way. I mean, if you come along meatloaf, yeah eat it, a sign: no.

Wait, what was I talking about?
I don't know you're name either, i'll get your info later.

You'll hear all sorts of big, probably not this big, thoughts on the party. I can tell you
from the coat check/water/wired(bigups tito!)-table alongside Ms.Paprika, we got
the widest gaze. We soaked in the view of soaked crowds, saw the smiles,
felt the air pierce with screams at big drops of bass from either side. It was one of
those nights you'll think about for a long time. Some kid, this night, this will be the
old-school they measure all other nights against. Someday this will be old-school,
although, this is old-school. The brewery has seen these nights, maybe we just
woke up it's body clock. It woke up happy.

Me and Mindy petered out kind at two, i'm amazed I didn't doze off in a bass bin myself.
Elissa and Chad stepped in to take our place, they'd been there since way ealier them-
selves. That's fucking love my friends, it warms right out from the crew. I've flown across
the country just to lend a hand for them. I know they'd do the same for me. There's a lot
of crews just as tight as this in Seattle. That's why i'm here.

This is way long, but it's everything i've ever needed to say.

Bigups to the whole fam:
Jeff, Doughboy, Kevin, Carey (awesome badges n' signs!), Mindy, Elissa, Duskah, Olivia,
Chad, the Bhammers, T-Prophet, Orca Sound, Alaina (nice to meetcha!), Reese, Wally, Josh,
that juggalo that helped setup (fawqwoff ninja!), S3 (Josh, Rozi, Micaela), Foxfire (Lighting folks I believe),
all the friendly Tully's folks, and any other skunky folk I missed. Snooches, let's do it!

I agree, it was an excellent show and had a lot of top notch aspects, from the dual rooms, to the outdoor area, the the high production value and the positive and fun energy of all the people there.

For those who don't know me, I own the lighting company that illuminated this event. You can check out pics of other shows I've done and contact me via www.MuvmentLighting.com

Most recently, I've been doing events in Portland, such as Time Squared and Howl, but since I live in Seattle, I think it would be pretty cool do actually do more shows here.

Thanks to the whole Skunky Beats crew, who were professional and fun. Everybody involved was fun to work with.
