she's coming to seattle as an opener for the band of montreal in october. i don't care for of montreal very much, i'm wondering if it's worth the 30+ dollars to take-off after a mind blowing opener...

Janelle Monae is so awesome.

Monae's one of the best things about Idlewild, Outkast's movie about a jazz resort. They've also supported her a lot by producing some of her tunes and introducing her to the music industry. So if you like Outkast's music, you'd probably like hers.

I also love her sense of style, all black and white and androgynous and Art Deco all over:

She really is so, so awesome. I love her stuff. Watching her dance is one of the best parts of her performance.

I actually enjoyed that. And I can't stand most R & B!! But it was something new, fresh, a little strange, but it kept met watching from front to back. Not sure when I'll get this, but I'll have to maybe get this!!!

i can't stand most modern R&B either. hopefully monae represents the first step towards a wresting of the genre back from all the self-obsessed and oversexed beyonces and ray-js.

nice....

I like watching her dance too, very old schoolish vibe with a lot of skill. Its very different from how a lot of female singers dance on stage these days.

her whole look and sound is also different from what a lot of female singers do too! i like different...:)

Not trying to thread jack, I just don't intend to start a new thread. I discovered this dude because of his collaborations with Q-Tip and Stevie Wonder.

i definitely dig his style, but most of his stuff sort of sounds like it could have been produced in the 60s. but don't think i'm bashing him, 'cause he's definitely got talent to spare. i just like that monae takes that sort of soul and class and mixes it with more experimental techniques and modern rhythms.

Yeah, Raph has some more modern sounding stuff, I just prefer the Motown throwback stuff. Old Motown and Stax records probably makes up half of what I listen to on any given day.

Anyway, you might like this one (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZMbNxw05o0) more.

I remember her ep a few years ago.
Amazing how long this album has taken. P Ditty is her producer, or at least was for the Metropolis EP.

Yea, I know it has been over two years.....

the only thing p diddy did was throw heaps of cash at an obvious talent he'd have been a fool to pass up. he had zero to do with the music.

If their fans start chatting with me about the band do I just say, "I'm just here for the opening act, hope you have fun tonight?"
