I have mixed feelings about awards shows.

But somehow I can't help but think this town is ripe for such a thing.

After performing all over the U.S. for years, I have to say we have one of the best communities out there.

The superlative local DJ and Producer talent easily rivals many major dance destinations in the U.S. and I feel like we are looking better than ever these days.

I wouldn't even know where to begin with such a thing - but what do you guys think about something like this?

As long as it doesn't involve a poll! ;)

when i read the title i thought this thread was going to be about have a dance competition and giving awards / accolades to the dopest :D

oh well.

this idea could go either way. if you do it local-awards style (like how pretty much every county has 'best of' awards that congratulate things like best theater, best pizza, best coffee, etc) it could be really positive for the community. stir up competition amongst people and crews to better themselves. etc.

it you do it grammy-style, however, i think that could really backfire and make this look like a town full of pretentious, self-congratulating doucheknobs with an overinflated self of self-importance. let's face it...we're no new york or miami or san francisco or detroit or chicago (or...or...or...). for real.

I guess it would depend on what style your judging on. Our we talkin EDM styles, like shuffle, jumpstyle, liquid, tektonic, or breakdancing...maybe winner for separate categories.

I think a hard dance rave that had a hard dance competition would be pretty fun.

Getting the kids excited about dancing would be great for the scene!

if he meant it as a dance competition instead of an awards ceremony for djs i would be so down. me and my crew would bust shit! plus it'd be a good way to get to meet other people who are all srs bznes about dancing. competition breeds creativity!

I think he's talkin about something like this: http://www.wintermusicconference.com/idmaballot/nominees/

which encompasses everthing from producers to DJ's to promoters to equipment shops to venues etc etc. I think it'd def be sick to have something involving dance crews as well. I think this is a pretty cool idea. Only challenge is that its gonna take a TON of work

And also selecting a date in which the max amount of people could actually attend would be difficult too.

Other than a fun community-bonding thing, awards ceremonies are industry ads - and unless there's something to promote that's bound out-of-state (ie local headliners on the cusp of breaking through to the national stage, club nights of national acclaim, major festivals), it would be like those mysterious Sonic burger ads we get over here.

I see these at times on the net - congrats DJ Gorkenietsky, on being the best drum 'n bass DJ in this obscure town within Estonia! Great...

Personally I think it would lead to a lot of derision that is really not necessary and shouldn't be welcome to the Seattle scene. Someone will always be butt-hurt about awards; it's the nature of an awards presentation - someone wins, but four or more other people always lose.

How about we show our appreciation for our city by working with other people here.

yeah, i sort of echo this sentiment. imo, there's also too much industry jockeying up here as it is. something like this will just add fuel to the fire of the status-chasers who flock to this city like it's the memphis of counter culture music.

lol I totally misinterpreted what ChannelSmurfer was talking about...

Dance awards awarded to DJs/producers...OOOOOHHhhhhhhhhkay. haha.

I still think a dance competition at a rave would be kickass tho.

Honeslty, I'm feelin ya on that one too.

At the same time, I think it would be fun to honor excellence in our local community.

Maybe I just want an excuse to wear a tux and drink champagne will listening to edm. heheh

Denver did it back in 2000, called CEMA... it was a total failure. It ended up being a battle of who was more in with certain crews, than it was about the people voting on the best of each category. Case in point, a guy who played a top 40 club and wasn't involved in the EDM scene won 'best house DJ'.

Not saying it would be the same in Seattle, but I've never seen an award contest that was based on the skills of someone, instead of how much cheerleading he/she can do to get the most votes from his/her friends.

I think that while the intent is in the right place, it might be better served to create a way to showcase the talent here in Seattle as opposed to creating a competition. As someone who produces as well as DJ's I feel that my reward is getting to perform and travel, and to hear other DJ's play my tracks. Highlighting the work done by locals that are impacting things on a national/global level would be great though, if we can find a way to do it without making into a competition.

there's no mystery behind the commercials, we have sonics here... so it's not really the same thing.

I emailed Sonic about those commercials a few years ago... they told me it was for market penetration, as they PLANNED to put Sonics in the Seattle area. It wasn't until '09 that Puyallup got the first one.
