Let's put my dvd collection this way. I have more porn than regular movies. I suppose that can be a good thing, since Blu-Ray has pretty much making having a large number of regular movies a bit passe, but it also doesn't do squat since we don't have a hdtv yet, and not too sure if I'll pick one up for 2011. I'd kind of rather save up for the studio monitors I need, that new Moog Slim Phatty, and some Moogerfooger pedals.....

my movie collection is mostly sci fi, then comedy, and some drama (mostly of the historic variety). that's about it. i still have a vcr and a bunch of old tapes including hackers and clueless. lol.

I did that after I posted here as I also realized I have some dupes listed.

between my gf and i we have about 8 full shelves of physical copies of dvd movies and tv show season boxes on dvd, all 8 shelves are full with dvds behind the front ones, so there are probably at least 800. Half the shelves are tv shows and the other half are movies. wait, i have another 2 shelves of movies and ps2/gamecube games on top of that, half are movies and half are games, so 50 movies and 50 games. so i have a total of about 900-1000 dvds. I have a stack of movies on cds in avi or mpeg format, along with 2 cd wallets with about 100 in each.

if we are talking books, there are about 15 shelves of books too, but those are all my gf's.

Digital is just my way of collecting.

IMO a collection full of physical copies is something to be more proud of.

Fun as in hunting down some gems yes.
But most movies 06 and after have never been made on VHS. If any at all :p

But that is if you are just limiting yourself to just one source.

No one said you had to be just one.
I know quite a few people who have over 5k in their library that spans from actual film reels to blue-ray and digital.

I have about 100 or so vhs, Which I now have digital copies of.
My 200 dvd's I ripped to my digital library as well.

The upsides of digital is space, simplicity in obtaining, take ANYWHERE
Downsides, Risk losing to HD failures, Dupes, Most ways of obtaining are illegal

It all comes down to personal preference.

yea gotta weigh things out. i personally like to just download the full retail copies, because they usually strip them of the previews and go straight to the menu, alot of the uploaders strip the extras like cut scenes and directors commentary, but i never watch them, so dont really care. *shrugs* it costs me $25 for 100 dvd cases. $20 for 100 dvd covers, about 3 sets of b&w/color ink cartridges($40 each set), and $25 for 100 pack of verbatum dvd-r to make 100 movies.

So I am paying $1.90 a dvd to make it myself and have the same thing people buy at the store, usually can get it 3-4 weeks before it comes out in the store too.

I've never been a big collector, in all honesty I've never collected at all. When they had VHS I was a yout so I didn't even bother trying to attain them, when DVDs came out I couldn't be bothered with movies at first because I wasn't even into them, tbh I was more into the reality shows (as kids of my age are now). Now that I'm a bit older (18) I'm more of a movie man.

I have 20 or 30 on my External Hard drive, I've never really worried about the HD failures because it just doesn't seem like it's likely to happen. LOL even though my computer ist kaputt!

And yeah most ways of obtaining them are illegal, but I like getting them illegally, not that I don't mind paying, but if I'm paying for internet then the world should be at the tip of my fingers. You know what I mean?
