it was the demo version, multiplayer was direct connect, IPX network, or modem. This is where it all stemmed from.
Then there was a bulletin board service you could find other players on.

I cant stand warcraft 1. I can play warcraft 2 still since they fixed alot of annoyances that were in 1. warcraft 3 was the best though, and probably always will be until another warcraft war strategy version comes out.

selecting 4 units max was annoying, using alt click (or was it shift? fuck it was so long ago...) just to group those units before they implemented drag to select functions in WC2 was annoying. though, producing mages and stomping the shit out of entire armies with a mere water elemental or daemon was priceless. 1shot any unit, 3shot farms, etc..
So overpowered. Blizzard didn't give a shit or have a clue about balance back then in an RTS, WC3 survived not so much due to balance, but due to it's modding community, while Starcraft was a balanced piece of art that went professional/competitive.
They effectively killed the warcraft progression as an RTS genre because they were cannibalizing thier own market share in the RTS market by competing with themselves.
so they diversified from RTS/RTS/HacknSlashDungeonCrawler to MMO/RTS/HacknSlashDungeonCrawler
Personally, I occasionally still play WoW, though I'm lucky to put in more than an hour in a week.
I like games of all backgrounds, shit, I've played DDR, Rock Band, Gran Turismo 5, MMOs, RTS, FPS, blah blah...
Anyways, what was the point of this thread again?

We'll make sure you get through the Canadian Border with your Nugs alright hehehe.
I would seriously like to challenge someone to a Modem or direct link Warcraft 1 (or better just the demo) with a Pentium 1 Proc or slower. I'm willing to mail the power supply and MOBO, you provide
the monitor and other stupid shit like 5 pin Keyboard and ps2 mouse etc.... Oh wait, I'm a cop so nobody is gonna give me their
home address on here for me to send the parts I salvage from FREE GEEK.
Ahh the rough life of a Psychopathic Gypsy Joker Cookie. Wudya think we kept our labs safe via secrecy?!
No! We trade fuck ups like baseball cards for schedule 1 s.
