I want to buy a inexpensive chef's knife that works fairly well. Doesn't have to be top of the line, just something that will work until we're able to buy a better knife set. :o We'll mainly be using it to cut meats.. We make a lot of home-made pho, with thinly sliced beef.

Any suggestions? *0*

Well, Bed Bath and Beyond has the advantage of being a box store with good high end cutlery. That said, it will be cheapER, but not necessarily cheap. I got a 180$ set of henkels for 18$ because someone hid them behind a frying pan at target once. So I suppose you could get lucky.

In all honesty though...your best bet....when you're at the deli buying meats for pho...have 'em slice it thin for you. It's free.

Hmm, that's a good point... We do use knives for other things, just the ones we have aren't very high quality... But I'll suggest we have the deli cut it, too.

Btw nice sig. :) star wars ftw

Every once in a while you can get really lucky at Ross, but you have to have a good eye for damaged and poor goods. A phone with a nice bar code scanner (or internet for searching) is often a big help for price comparisons and reviews.

Depends on what you consider cheap.. You can get a nice Forschner for around $30 (this is what I consider the low end.). Honestly having been a chef I would always suggest having one decent 10" Chef's knife. You can't beat good steel at keeping it's edge during use.

if you want a knife for thin cutting meats you're going to want something that holds an edge, which is going to be a good knife and those are typically not cheap.

that being said...these knives are retarded sharp:

if you can swing it though this knife is even sharper and probably holds and edge a lot better:

careful though! its ceramic so it'll shatter!

Many manufacturers have a blemish bin, with discounted products. I don't know about where you are, but we have a few local blade companies around here, so that's what I usually do. Of course my kitchen set is Wasabi, I highly recommend them if you want a really nice knife, for a fair price(bamboo infused handles and high carbon Japanese steel). I'm kind of a knife snob, and these way surpassed my expectations for the price.

Every birthday and holiday I go to Daiso for knives for my mom.
They're like 2-5 bucks and work really well. And if they wear down just buy another :D
