Guess you've never heard 'Greece 2000' from Three Drives on a Vinyl (http://www.discogs.com/Three-Drives-On-A-Vinyl-Greece-2000/release/22839 (the video in this link isn't that good.. you want the 'Original Mix' to hear what I'm talking about)?

Some of the biggest trance tunes ever were guitar-based... even since 'Funky Guitar from TC1992, the arpeggiated guitar sound has been used in trancy music. A lot of the synth sounds in early anthem trance were sharper to sound like a guitar and only as the sound became more cheeseball did the synths get all 'blary' and loud. Kinda sad how it progressed the way it did.
