View Full Version : Dubstep killed it's father!

I sit here in my studio and look at crates and crates of 2step. It makes me contemplate it's demise. I remember when the genre split and eventually turned into dubstep. In it's transition, I used to call it "dark dubstep" or "abstract 2step." Then Poof, it was all gone! My precious whompy 2step sounds were killed off by dubstep like the Neanderthal was by Homo Sapiens. This didn't happen because is a more advanced sound. It happened because it is a greedy, dark creature!
I hate you for this, dubstep. You couldn't resist crushing your maker could you? You've ripped out your own roots and poured poison on them. Your slithering tail is in your own mouth and your desire for consumption will be your end. Pop will eat itself!
Producers, please bring the sound illustrated in this mix I made back in 2001 (http://soundcloud.com/basscult/electrokid-livin-2step-funky). If it's money you are after, call it a "throw back." I don't care what you do but bring back the WHOMP!
Discuss.

Thanks to dubstep, 2-step and UK garage have been experiencing a revival for the past couple of years, with new artists contributing towards the genres (and its subsequent evolution into UK funky and future garage/beat/bass).Tbh, there's a lot more variety now. Heard a Burial/Four Tet/Tom Yorke collab b2b a J Da Flex & El-B remix of When I Fall In Love on a pirate radio set - you'd never hear that kind of diversity back in the day.

Interesting news. My experience of habitually going through the breaks section on Beatport has led me to believe no one is really producing it in full force. Perhaps I'm going to have to look harder for it on other sites. I often forget about juno.co.uk, which has pretty much always been a source.

2step is alive and well. Sub.FM has a slew of garage oriented shows during the day (in addition to dubstep ones, of course). Also, Whistla's L2S record label is about to put out it's 50th release, which is a pretty big milestone. Fans of 2step will find a lot to love in their catalog:
http://boomkat.com/search?fields[]=label&q=L2s+Recordings
I highly recommend Submerse, Resketch, Original Face, and Sentinels to name a few of L2S's artists.
My record label, Car Crash Set, has put out quite a lot of garage too with more on the way:

Me too, now that it split up into 2 genres, grime and dubstep. I've taken the grime root.

2step is alive and well.
What? 2-step is hardly dead! People like Whistla, Para, Submerse, 8th Note, Atomic, Resketch, Roof Light, Falty DL, Breakage, LIttlefoot and more still very much pushing the sound. There are also a slew of American producers (some of them in the PNW). And that is just off the top of my head at 3am.
And of course don't forget one one like Ill Cosby / Car Crash Set :)

Junodownload is the place for garage. The assholes at Beatport put 2-step in the breaks section and bassline in the electrohouse section.

Phew, glad somebody chimed in. There's a great resurgence of 2-step sounds and
garage that's bubbling just below the surface. "Prescribe da vibe" actually put out a
free ep not too long ago. I absolutely dig "Falty DL" too, just dunno at all where to put
it in a mix honestly. Go over to soundcloud and follow backwards from artists you know
to the artists they follow or to the favorites they have or to the groups they are apart of.
It's really fun!

i should state for the record, i like a lot of subgenres of dubstep. for a short while, i started to buy it but stopped because i decided that breaks and drum and bass were enough to focus on.
the point of this thread was not to hate on dubstep or the people who like it. the point of it was to try and mine some information about the current affairs of 2step. my plan worked and now i have some fuel to start off my voyage.

Thank you!
The latest FaltyDL album (You Stand Uncertain) is a 2step lover's dream; trust me - just pick that one up. Roof Light's latest tunes on Soundcloud have been nothing short of epic - Burial had better get to work or his thrown is going to be usurped by some up and coming artists.
I must shout out Night Audio - awesome releases from El-B, Submerse, KingThing, and crew. Also, Well Rounded have been putting out some astounding stuff - Deadboy's first single, Littlefoot's excellent latest, the Submerse / Resketch split, the Donga & Blake single. Seattle's 214 has some crushers coming out on Fortified Audio in the coming months - stay tuned for that.
Slime Recordings also has some wonderful releases. The latest Submerse (note: he's on every record label ever) and Resketch EP is gold from front to back and their latest from Kontigo is pure vibes. One of their latest signings called Archie Pelago from NYC is going to change the game - watch out for them later this year.
There is a lot of quality garage out there, I myself find it hard to keep up with all of the great stuff. There was a lull for a long time, but 2step is back and it's definitely in the hearts of a lot of UK club-goers.

What are your thoughts on the resurgence of instrumental grime as of late? It seems like everyone is latching onto the Terror Danjah / Elijah & Skilliam / Butterz bandwagon. With reason, though, the shit is super energetic. I've been finding hard not to fall into Butterz mini-set every time I'm on the decks.

Agreed. I can't even keep up with the amount of stuff coming out. I have a ridiculous amount of 2-step (and 4x4 which also seems to be coming back) I can barely keep up with -- producers really making some great stuff.

I should totally send you a folder of the 2-step freebies that were put out for free download in the past year.

Yeah, Terror Danjah is big in America I hear? I'm not sure I don't really know what kinda grime we like here.
But as far as the Elijah and Butterz bandwagon, ermm I don't know much about it, all I know is that when I'm on GrimeForum it's mainly ran by Elijah and has Butterz people on the site as well that are in charge. I've not heard anything from Elijah, but the Butterz label I've heard a few things. I mostly know about their Vinyls that they do, which supposedly is the biggest thing they do in the grime scene (Press the most vinyls). I'm mainly familiar with that producer TRC that's on the Butterz label, and he seems like a great producer, heard some tunes he's done for Trim and just some remixes and I really like his synths.
It's crazy that you mention that, because a couple of weeks ago I was just starting to realize that everyone was hyping over instrumentals, when I had first started listening to grime I had never really clocked that the instrumentals themselves were as important as the vocal tracks. But yeah, it's good for the scene I suppose. I never really got into the scene to listen to instrumentals, you know? I got interested by listening to "my names kylie, not aaron".
I look forward to the grime releases, the Wileys, the Dot Rottens, the Durrty Goodz's, the Trim's, just some proper spraying of bars with a nice instrumental.
If you collect instrumentals we'll have to exchange some instrumentals because I got some and would like some more if you wouldn't mind trading.

I think the vinyl pressings for Butterz is a big look, but their monthly packs of downloads is like throwing chum in the water for fans. Case in point, S-X's 'Bricks' was released for free a few months ago in one of their download packs and this week it's on the B-side of their latest white label 10" and I'm scrambling to figure out how to get it without getting killed on shipping fees. I already have it, but it's a giant tune. From the standpoint of a label, they've done an amazing job of giving away most of their music and not diminishing the value of their brand, which I haven't seen another label do before.

I haven't even checked out nor heard of their monthly packs, but if you have some links can you toss them my way please?
Oh yeah I know that song, it was used for this song called #cokeandvodka by Dream Mclean. Erm if I were you I'd talk to them personally, maybe Email whoever works with Butterz. Yeah well that's grime, mostly everything is built off of free downloads because of the kind of fans that they have. If you're not giving out free things then basically I wouldn't see you having a long run in the Grime genre.
TRC doessss. Do you do grime raves or something? Or do you just play mainly instrumentals?
Btw if you don't deal with vinyls only I have Dizzee Rascal BIDC instrumentals.

Some tracks are better than others, but there are usually two or three dependably heavy tracks in there. Also, random photos, the occasional WAV or AIFF file, and tracks released elsewhere that should probably not have been included.
I don't do grime shows per se, I just play whatever is good in the general bass music world of dubstep and garage and right now grime has some of the most interesting tracks. My knowledge of grime is really limited, I was into it during the mid 00s, then went away from it, and I'm just now getting back into it. These freebies are really cluing me in to what's good.

'Spartan' is giant, I love that one. I'm really feeling the tracks from Mr. Virgo and Teddy / Silencer as well. I'm absolutely into vocal tunes too, I've been enjoying the one-offs I've heard from P Money and D Double E, but I definitely opt to play instrumentals more often than not.
In the latest Butterz zip, there was at least one track that was released on another label and another I think they released themselves. It may not have been a mistake, but I get the feeling that it may have been.

i like to think of it this way.
junior didn't kill daddy.
daddy started hanging out with some...different people. people who, deep down, he probably didn't really want to be around, but they made his life seem sexy, new and exciting. then, junior comes along and charms the shit out of these people, stealing them away into his world where they're even happier than they were with daddy.
now daddy's had some time to himself to think things over. he's started working out again and has been considering what really matters to him. he's making new friends and people who he hasn't seen in years are saying he's looking a lot better than the last time they saw him.
and in a lot of ways, while his old friends might not like junior's style, they're actually a little happy he's taken those people out of his and their lives.

I don't listen to Virgo and Teddy's tunes are starting to get a bit too repetitive to me, they all sound the same kinda like Spooky's or they're half assed produced with the same formula imo.
Oh yeah you're one of them guys lol. Yeah P and D Double are sick, still pissed D double been inna the game for 10 years with still no CD.
Ohhh I understand.
Well Trim and Elijah and Skilliam did a set with Discarda and Trim for Trims new CD Monkey features, has some heavy instrumentals and Trims flow is so sick. Just gonna drop a link for you

Well now I am downloading....thought I liked grime, but may have been just mid 00's grime - I'll see.
Lyrics/vocal samples get boring fast, but if they are done well enough, I don't mind.
Anyway d/l is slow, but at work who cares! ;)
