Tietso?
WTF MIXMAG?
http://www.mixmag.net/2011/01/19/the-greatest-dj-result/
Richie Hawtin came in #2.
Andy C came in #4.
Both of them are better producers then TIETSO in my opinion.
Discuss.

i also remember one article in mix mag where they tested out how well you could drive on different drugs.
for the record you drive the best on coke, worst on alcohol.
also where you can get your ecstasy for the cheapest across the country.
should tell you something about the magazine.

The problem is that it IS one of the largest electronic music mags out there. So claiming Tietso can walk on water and give 1000 women orgasms just by walking by them will push his ego through the stratosphere. I figure he'll end up on South Park soon.

Agreed. If you want pure talent, Terry Francis or Doc Martin should have been top, since they consistently play on 3 decks flawlessly and guys like Tiesto barely play 2...so this just shows 'the most popular dj ever' and nothing more.

Yeah, but your skill/performance level != the size of your show.
I can name a half dozen acts off the top of my head who I'm sure the promoters paid exuberant amounts of money for that were absolutely laughable.

Thats pretty fucking epic. You must have missed KD Lang singing Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" at the opening ceremony for the last Canadian Olympics. I think a song about how much love sucks and a girl tying a guy up to a chair then cutting his hair off, performed live by one of the butchiest butches who ever butched, is way more epic than anything Tiesto could ever dream of.

If some big label pushed Tiesto to mainstream fame, I'd agree with you guys. But the fact is, he has been working at it for over 20 years. You'd have to be retarded to not learn how to mix in that amount of time.
Personally, I think most of his stuff is boring. Being that trance is my favorite, I agree that there are much better producers out there. (Look up Radion 6)
Even if you don't think he's the "best," its hard to say hes not one of the most accomplished.

Dude, that's EXACTLY how he got where he is. He started a sub-par trance label in the late 90s, got some big names to release on it like Way Out West and he used the label as a jumping off point for his career. It helped that he's from the Netherlands, where he could hook up with the major promoters of the Amsterdam events to promote his music.

Exactly. I opened for Richie @ a few parties in Denver in his DE909 days and having seen his performance first-hand behind the scenes, it's mostly hype and little actual production work. You can do the same shit with a Pioneer mixer or with Traktor. Don't get me wrong, he's nice enough, but his production is questionable and his DJing is only a bit better; he's the techno version of Tiesto: proof that a good publicist can get you mad gigs.

Can't speak to Hawtin's DJ skills, especially given the crap he plays today, but as a producer, he used to be pretty good. I've always been a Plastikman fan. I mean, seriously. Musik and Consumed are probably two of the best techno albums ever.

I dunno... I've never been impressed with his production. His production style is as if he were DJing, with his off-phrased application of efx and drawn-out songs. Some are cool, sure, but it always felt like he was making weird shit, just to make weird shit... kinda like Villalobos was doing for a while. That said, Minus Yellow is one of my fav techno tracks ever... brilliant use of Yello and I liked his Concept releases (have the vinyl and CD) and his work with Pete Namlook, but I think that's because Pete offset his abstractness with more structure.

Yeah, he definitely had a lot of filler. But listen to a track like Konception and tell me that isn't a classic. Sure he's no Jeff Mills or Claude Young, but who is? Point I'm trying to make is, I don't think his problem is lack of natural talent; it's too much drug use. Instead of just taking an occasional hit of LSD, he's lived on it for so many years now that his brain isn't functioning right anymore.

my chess move? why isnt THIS MAN (http://www.discogs.com/artist/Aphex+Twin) considered for top 10 then as well? Because its not popular or hyped up? He's got a lot out there as far as remixes, records, artists, HIS OWN LABEL TOO...
its all club hype
fame, public appearance, being pretty, and having a flashy package that can be accepted by the masses
marketing ones self
kinda like how dubstep got big so fast and now everyone does/makes/produces/books it?
someone may catch that same wave Tiesto did with the fluffy clouds he shits out ;) (he should totally marry a unicorn..anyways...)
i dont really diss Tiesto because he has made an empire for himself, so that proves that he is a wee bit more ambitious than other people (or maybe got handed the right gig). But he worked for it, so in that, good on him for making himself sucessful.
Can YOU get masses of people to tattoo your logo onto their body? Thats kind of like an unspoken challenge if you wanna look at it that way too (just another point of view someone could have in this scenario).
but as far as his style, layers depth, etc...
MEHHHHH
there are lots of other genres out there that are much more complicated to program together than progressive epic trance and pop euro dance hits :)

so i kinda assume anything fluffy or cheesy over there is probably pop
and yea totally!
Squarepusher, Aphex Twin and a ton of other artists have worked just as hard, have their own labels, and been doing music for 10-20yrs +
yet Tiesto sucked the golden cock proper and got where he is now
i even own tiesto records (hey, they're worth money /shrug) but if given the choice, id pick Richard D James instead :)

Well, it has a lot to do with the ramping up of the trance sound, combined with the influx of huge swaths of noobs to the 'rave scene'. Since trance is a gateway music to the scene, most glommed onto the sound and propelled the music further... it was like a snowball effect. The same thing happened on a smaller scale in the early 90s with jungle, which made guys like Dara the huge names they are today.

For the ranking to be based on true skill, I would definitely think it would need to be an actual Turntablist, not just a mix and blend DJ. Personally I am not a huge fan of scratching, but cutting, juggling, scratching, on the fly sampling, and the like is where the deck becomes a musical instrument. I would say Q-Bert, Swamp, Z-Trip, Kid Koala, etc would run circles around Tiesto.

(Yawn), I really hate greatest dj polls, it's always so one sided most the time....Even if you break it down to genres, it's still bullshit because not every dj is the right one for everybody. A dj I love, you might think sucks, and a dj you think is great I might think sucks......
So just pick one you're into, but don't claim they're the GOAT, because that's just a matter of opinion. I don't care if they've played mega-tours all over the globe, I don't care if any tracks they produce has everybody wanting to dl it. It's just music, and they perform it. Being the greatest dj isn't all it's really cracked up to be....

#3 Sven Vath!
Dude was my idol back in Germany ('95) before I discovered Jungle.
Used to follow him to 2-3 club s in a night sometimes.
Also the man who I used to watch to learn the basics of dj'in.
#3 spot totally earned.

This is the distinction that everyone is confused over.
"Greatest" can mean most prolific.

when was the last time you packed out showbox market?
pretty sure he is a dj (actually spins on Turntables too :D), and is much more famous than any of us can ever hope to be. Don't hate the player hate the gameeee
Don't get me wrong, I hate that hes as popular as he is, but ya'll just hatin
He is a JOKE!!!! NOTHING MORE NOTHING LESS!!!!!
And I never tried or cared anything about packing the Showbox...I have a feeling that You and I spin for different reasons. I play because it is the one thing I have done in my life that has helped me find and achieve balance. I could care less about packing a room full of greasy cheese-balls who want to come out to see the monkey puppet they saw on TV!!! Just because you let yourself become a spectacle does not make him a DJ.. IMO

But there is something to say for being such a giant cock.

i dont really agree. i mean someone could use it that way, but it would be a strange sense, since being the best at djing doesnt mean you do it the most often. you could spin out every single night and it wouldn't necessarily make you better at djing than anyone else.

Ultimately, its subjective...so unless you poll the entire planet, take it with a grain of salt.

Exactly...by that rationale, Christianity is the best religion, because it has the most followers. All quantity shows me is they have a solid marketing plan...being 'the best' is too subjective to ever quantify in a real, unbiased term.

No, you guys are focusing too much on frequency now.
I think in this case "greatest" means noteworthy, which is listed as a synonym on dictionary.com. (Also, WTF??? GREATEST?? is that really a word???)
The term great in this case has mostly to do with the hype and image these dj's have. Consider the following sentence: "DJ Craze may be the best dj of all time but Tiesto is the greatest." Does that make sense?

not really. it'd make more sense to say tiesto is the most popular DJ of all time. greatness implies much more than sheer popularity.

I got something to say
And I killed your baby today
And it doesn't matter much to me
As long as it's dead
Well I got something to say
I raped your mother today
And it doesn't matter much to me
As long as she spread
Sweet lovely death
I am waiting for your breath
Come sweet death, one last caress
Go
Sweet lovely death
I am waiting for your breath
Come sweet death, one last caress
Well, I got something to say
