hi.
yes, freak nation is still going on. just look for the fliers around seattle. but, because i am an opinionated bastard, i am going to suggest you don't go to this. the promoters are not the most ethical people. well, i ahve put my two cents in. i did see a flier for this party today at platinum records on pike st. look there...

i am not going to or supporting freak night
due to what happened with their last event
at the lish house. i feel it showed
disrespect for the dancers and for the
entire community.

however, i will be going to earthdance..
earthdance is a yearly event.. last year
35 countries participated. it's completely nonprofit - a benefit for tibet. each year
a track is created just for the event and
is played at the same time at each event worldwide. it's also broadcast live via the internet so you can see dancers in tokyo, london, and other places experiencing the music.
last year seattle's earthdance event
went so well that word go to the creator
of the concept in london (chrisbo, from return to the source) and he picked
seattle out of every place worldwide
as where he wanted to perform.
http://www.earthdance.org has more information...

whoops.. i meant freak nation. i *WILL*
be at freak night, doing a Dancesafe booth
to pass out drug awareness information and
various other things.
here is an email i wrote to someone else who asked about freak nation explaining my thoughts..
.....
the lish house is a venue which had been used for small
techno-events for about 6-7 years... many people felt
very strongly about it and felt that it was a "family" space.
adonis and others in high society threw an event there.
the owner of the space had gone out, figuring that
everything would be all right and he didn't need to be
supervising.
the venue officially holds 350 people, but in my opinion,
even that many is uncomfortable. somehow high society
managed to pack 600-700 people into the space.
once they were inside, the back bathrooms were closed.
normally at lish house events, everyone would just
refill their water in the bathroom. because they were
closed, they couldn't do that. then they were charging
$3 for bottled water.
at many larger-scale events, it's common practice
to charge that much for bottled water. but the lish
house is not like that. it was not a place for "concerts"
and there was always free water or at least running
water available there.
i feel that high society showed disrespect for the
dancers, who are supposedly the people they throw
events for, by packing that many people into the
space and making it hard for them to get water.
the number one cause of "overdoses" at raves
is overheating.. people don't drink enough water,
get too hot, and pass out/get sick. it's a problem
whether or not you do drugs at parties (i don't).
if a promoter is charging money for their event,
to me there are at LEAST these bare
minimum requirements for safety...
-space for people to move and breathe
-water
-bathrooms (or porta-potties or equivalent)
if those things are not going to be
present, then people should be told in
advance.
all of those things could have been present at
the lish, but they apparently thought making
money was more important.
so, after they managed to pack all those people
into the space, the cops showed up and busted
the event. the event WAS legal - but it didn't
have permits for that many people - it was only
permitted for 350 people.
the owner of the space showed up just as the
event was getting busted. hundreds of people
were pouring out of the venue into the street.
i imagine it looked kind of like those things
at the circus where they open a volkswagen
bug and dozens of clowns climb out, making
you wonder how the hell they fit. :P
when the owner showed up, ALL the people
from high society took off. they didn't even
stick around to see what was going on or
try and help. they just took the money and left.
after the event was over, i heard about this from
a friend (i was out of town). i don't like to spread
rumors about things, so i called the promoters
to ask them for their side of the story. i didn't
know their phone number, so i left a message
on their info-line.
adonis called me back. he was very pleasant
to talk to, but he confirmed everything i had
heard from my friends who had gone to the
event. not only that, but he didn't seem to regret
how they had handled things or be concerned
about it at all.
if high society had recognized what had happened
and had made some sort of attempt to apologize
for it, then i wouldn't be upset about it. they could
have put something on their flyer saying "sorry
about what happened at our last event." or
mentioned it on their info line. they could have
posted online about it, or offered a discount to
people who were at their last event. etc. etc.
there are other things that could be done too.
but the fact that they don't seem to think it
matters or care pisses me off. i don't see any
reason to support a promoter who doesn't
give back to the community and shows blatant
disrespect for people.
so that's why i left their event off my webpage and am encouraging everyone i
know NOT to attend.
