my point is that as we grow and develop throughout our lives, we assemble more personality traits than our natal chart exemplifies. i feel that natal charts are useful for explaining your template of traits, but any person who has gone through many growth periods will not be the same person as their natal chart indicates. they will have absorbed new traits.

i think that astrology serves its most useful purpose in enlightening us to the vastness of the human psyche rather than pigeon-holing people into a template. we are all unbalanced in some ways, and by studying the personality traits of astrology (not just placidus houses, but the astrologies of different cultures, such as chinese and vedic), we come to learn about other traits that we can take upon ourselves, thereby enriching our own personalities and balancing ourselves out. all these cultures must have touched upon some universal human quality if they all built these self-consistent systems of the human psyche independently.

in my opinion, it is best to be the all the signs of the zodiac, all the planetary aspects, everything, so that you can be the most versatile person for all of life's situations. to limit oneself to being one sign or the other is to limit your life perspective.

astrology's second useful purpose is to enlighten us to how we as individual humans interact with our environment, the earth, and the other planetary bodies. we are very small bodies compared to the large planets. but the universe lives as a system, just as our internal physiology lives as a system. when we tap into this larger system intelligence (vibe, energy, wotever you want to call it), we learn how to flow with the river, so to speak.

astrology in the context of "my chart says i don't get along with your chart" is just the tip of the ice-berg, and it is sad that things like squares and opposites or sign "incompatibilities" (oh, so arbitrary) make people feel negative and shy away from getting to know people.

anyone saying "my chart to your chart" non-sense probably hasn't dealt with themselves very well - regardless of whether they have studied their natal charts.

I love astrology. Not for the pigeon holes, because you're right, a lot of people choose to follow that path. I love astrology for the patterns and the objectivity. Now, I don't know if you are aware, but your natal chart changes. Where the planets are when you are born is akin to chinese astrology for basics. Everyone is under celestial influence at all times, or whatever else you choose to call it. There are what are called transits which are personal phases of growth in everyone's lives which affect them differently. Your natal chart also "progresses." Which is to say it evolves as you do. You do not stay locked into your natal planets.

Astrology is a tool, not a scapegoat. It irks me when people use it as such (ie. incompatibility or refusal to grow, etc). The beauty of astrology is for some people, it is a helpful tool in objectivity and taking focus of the self and more towards the universe.
