so recently, ive thought about buying a mini disk player. heres the story..
i always have a discman with me on campus, walking around... tho i dont like how big it is, and recently, its sooo used its dying. it randomly turns itself off a lot, like evvery couple minutes... its a pain. (dropped it too many times heh)
so, i need a new device. heres what ive considered..
i could buy a new discman, 75-100 bucks prolly.
other options:
i could buy a cdrw to make my own cds, but id need a discman for that.
i could buy an mp3 player, but i could only put mp3s on it, they dont hold many songs, extra memory for them costs a lot... they cost about the same as a mini disk player.
now mini disk players seem like the best deal. they are the same price aboout as mp3 players... you can buy extra little disks and not have to always replace them like on an mp3 player where you can only have a certain amount of songs at once, and you can use it in your car or on your computer, and its small and could fit in my pocket.
so, do any of you have these? are they really as good of a deal as they sound?
i need some comments or recommendations images/smilies/smile.gif

I have a friend who has a mini-disk player, If it's only to replace the discman it's totally worth it, it's small, gets good sound, and the best part is that you can erase your mini-discs and put new songs on them if you get board of what you have, you can basically come up with an infinite number of mixes, I would get one myself if it weren't so expensive, plus I truthfully haven't had the need, i don't listen to my discman that much. you need an adapter to listen to it in a car, but I think that it would totally be worth it, and it's too bad that they haven't really caught on more.

no one else on the board has a mini disk player and can vouch for it?
jokerls: yea, id be using it to replace the discman... but also, i want to be able to get mp3s off my comp and listen to them. for that, theres 3 options... buy a cdr, but then ill have to buy a new discman anyways, buy an mp3 player, but mini disk players you can have all the little rewritable disks.. or buy the mini disk player.
and they all cost around the same.
so yea, i guess im just hoping people on here can give opinions on theirs they own, if there are problems with them, fragile-ness, etc... i need input dammit images/smilies/smile.gif

Hey Kim you should do some research on the Nomad. Its an mp3 player that holds 8gigs or so of mp3s. I think its like $150 though... but it would be worth it in the long run I suppose.
Ciao.

i had one when they first came out, cost $200, i was ripped off!! the only album i know about that has come out on mini-disc since i bought it is some Pearl Jam album. i sold that bitch a year ago and i never want to see it again, what a waste! sure you can make your own albums, but the minidiscs dont have that much space and it gets annoying to have to make a copy of a cd everytime you want to hear your new favorite album!

Kim-
A couple weeks ago I bought a mini-disc player/recorder... and i *LOVE* it.
I got a Sony MZ-R70, it cost me about 250 dollars, with the addition of 3 discs that I bought to start me out.. I think I spent about 5 bucks per disc or something.. But they are getting cheaper, and from what I understand there are places you can get them for a dollar a disc.
Let's see- It's extremely reliable, I've got 40 seconds of anti-skip protection, 15 hours of playback battery life on a single recharable double A battery/6 hour record life. The unit serves as a charging unit as well, and you just plug it into the wall and let it charge itself. It takes about 3 hours for it to charge up to full capacity.
The one I got was a little more pricey, becuase it also has a USB link on it so that I can really easily just hook into my computer and dump mp3's/wav's whatever on to it. Very handy.
It's small, blue, and fuckin SEXY. Extremely mobile, it basically fits into the palm of my hand very easily... no issues about mobility. The main application that I use it for (and the reason I got it) is to record live sets of myself (and others) at parties- and I must say it does a phenomenal job. I go straight off the record outputs of the mixer and get an extremely clear single, I have the ability to adjust the record level on the MD player 'n all that jazz.
Sound quality- EXCELLENT. It's digital. I can't hear any line noise, or any artifacts in the recordings (that wasn't already there in the original recording.) Now if you want to get technical about it. The sound quality is not "CD quality" from what I understand. It is just slightly under it, but to be honest- I can not hear/detect ANY difference. I've compared both signals, and I just really can't hear any difference. *shrug*
I've got two outputs and two inputs (Line-in/Optical-in and Mic)
I haven't had a chance to use the optical input, which is for super high quality recordings... I dont have another device with an optical output yet.
Anyway. Two big thumbs up- I love it! I definately recommend getting one. It's great to be able to record your faveorite songs on to a disc, and than just wipe over it with something else when you get bored of those songs. its easy to plug into a car stereo if you have a tape deck, just use the cd tape adapter. images/smilies/smile.gif thats what i do.
Get one kim. images/smilies/smile.gif

I use portable mini disc recorders at school. I must say, I like them a lot.

i forgot to add it was portable but yeah, it was pretty reliable for being one of the first ones you could buy for under $300. i just remembered another thing that pissed me off, i was always losing those mini-discs, no one makes cases for carrying them so i was stuck with putting them in my pocket and my bag.

hmmmm i find your ideas intriguing, i would like to subscribe to your newsletter.
*portable mp3 players suck, they dont have enough space for even a full cd, even if you buy a upgrade*
but the car mp3 player idea is vary good, i think i might do that, seriously, it wont be that difficult. images/smilies/smile.gif thanks for the idea.

Mini disc players are a cool idea, but here's the reason I'll never use one: they record in realtime only. That means if you want to put a track on your minidisc, you have to play the whole track out as it records it. Just like making tapes. Yeah you can delete them, or move them around later, but to record them you have to sit and wait.
Most MP3 players aren't viable options either, as they only hold 64 or 96 minutes of music. The Nomad, however, has a 6 gb capacity, but runs around $300 I think.
What would *I* do? I'd buy one of the new portable cd players that will play MP3s off CDRs. That way you can carry one cd and have 600 minutes of listening time. And they're $200 or less!

I have a Mini Disc player and i love it. the discs arent that expensive, i get like 5 for 20 or so, uhhmm you can record and re-record the skipping that happens happens after like 45 seconds of actually tapping the player, like a hard tap not just tapping your finger on it. i carry it around and i can run and jump and do anything and it doesnt skip. the only reaon i have heard one skip is because we wanted to see how hard and long youd have to do it. mine also came with a mp3 link thingy. i havent had the opporotunity to use it yet, since i dont have a computer. but i love it. i plug it into my stereo and its great. digital recording and all. so what if you have to wait for the song to play whilst you record. then you get to hear it if you are recording it you like the song id assume so...

yea, i kind of was veering away from mp3 players, cuz every time you want to listen to new stuff, you have to erase the stuff already on your mp3 player and put new stuff on.. i like the idea of a mini disk player beceause you can just buy more mini disks, and reuse them. like having a cdr plus a discman..
analog: yea, the ones ive been looking at are more than 200... and i wasnt planning on finding any albums that come out on mini disk, i was expecting to have to create each one... i think tho i wouldnt mind the hassle, i only listen to like, 10 of my cds on a regular basis, occasionally one will get thrown into the fray once in awhile.
how has it been for reliability etc? does it break ever or skip or anything?
