Heh, I have adored this show since I was in middle school....I think that they are doing pretty well since Colin Quinn and Cheri Oteri left...those two kicked ass....all the greats left years ago and they still managed to accurately portray most predominate figures in society....plus they have NO scruples...funny you should post this because I was just thinking they have become much better lately!

I agree with u arthur, SNL sucks, i like when they had collin quinn, norm M., tim meadows and cheri oterri. The show is going downhill now just like when anonthy micheal hall was on. But hey they have jimmy fallon "the company computer guy" he's pretty funny!!!

Jimmy Fallon and Cheri Oteri were holding it together? Come on now, you've got to be kidding.. The only thing that's held that show together in the last 3 years has been the incredible comic genius that is Will Ferrell.. I love Cheri, and I can't get enough of Jimmy's Boston accent sketches.. but you gotta give respect to Will.. He's the cornerstone of that show now.. He's completely versatile and actually gives a shit about his job and doing it right.. Ever seen him look over at the cuecards? Nope, because he actually remembers his lines, unlike those hacks who think that if they just giggle and stumble their way through a sketch that everything will be OK.. The level of talent as a whole has decreased, big-time.. and so far the only hope for the future is the continued usage of Will, and Maya Rudolph...
I do agree though.. It will never be as good as it was during the Phil Hartman/David Spade/Mike Myers/Chris Farley/Adam Sandler days...

I actually think this is the best it's been since Norm McDonald left. but I really miss the greats like Mike Myers, Phil Hartman(does anyone remember the Anal Retentive Chef?), Farly, Sandler, Chris Rock, and last but definately not least, in my mind the funniest man, second only to steve martin, and that is Dana Carvey!!!! Well isn't that special. the only reason I say second to steve martin is because steve is the funniest man EVER!!!! and I would have to agree with the fact that Will Ferrel is holding the show together.

Some nights it can hold it's own. I saw a skit with N'Sync where they were this "fast-food boy band." I really got a kick out of that. However, SNL has been pretty bad since about 1994 or 95. The only reason its still onis its enduring reputation. If it weren't so good in the past, it would be gone.
So yeah. I don't watch it anymore. I haven't really watched it since I graduated back in 1993. Wow. I'm old...

For as long as I have ever watched SNL, people have been talking about how good it USED to be. I actually don't watch it much, but I agree with giving props to Will Ferrel... c'mon, the cheerleader skits, the geeky couple who put together the musical montages, and the literary lovers are all freakin' hilarious.
However, there are definately NOT FUNNY moments... Mango comes to mind...

for all you old skool SNL fans...
there's a house track by dirty gringos called cowbell. it samples an old SNL skit with Christoper Walken. It is friggin FUNNY!
"It's sounden great guys, but it could have used more cowbell"
(mad cowbell solo)
"I gotta have more cowbell"
(more driving cowbell beats)
"Guess what, I gotta fever. And the only perscription...is more cowbell"
(cowbell rocking out like you wouldn't believe)
Great tune. Hasn't been released yet,but look for it!

In Alaska, Saturday night amounts to about any other day as there truly isn't a nightlife if you aren't 21.. unless you wanna hop from house to house in search of amusement and more Steel Reserve. So SNL is (and always has been ever since I can recall being in existance) an integral facet of entertainment for the weekend.

In recalling recent GOOD sketches to my mind, Mom Jeans was the first and foremost, I word you Boyd Main!! I shit too! WEIRD!
SNL is the kind of show you grow up with, it's always a little lame here and there but with ultimately redeeming factors like the 58% of the time when it's truly hilarious. Jimmy is the man, Kattan and Farrel are downright laughter in human form (anyone remember the HUGE picture of Kattan on his apartment wall? What do you wanna bet it's chillin in his house right now?) All and all SNL is good by me: the AK 2¢. Nuff said.

Saturday Night Live has highs and lows. Eventually if you give it time it will right itself back to equilibrium and then even become funny again, often with the rise of some hot new star who is the epitome of hilarity.
Because SNL has been and still is the PREMIER vehicle by which many a movie comedian's careers are launched.
the first two seasons (75-76) were spectacularly stupid funny....like on the realm of Monty Python type absurdity and humour, but after that many members of the cast quickly started a trend--that continues to this day--of leaving the show to go onto bigger and better things. So many legends: Dan Aykroid, Chevy Chase, John Belushi, Gilda Radner, Bill Murray, Steve Martin (he was never actually a cast member. He just hosted a lot)
Then 77-81 was where the show lost steam, was unfunny, and generally was as bland and boring as the Carter Administration they tried to lampoon.
81-84 was all about one man: Eddie Murphy. Though not the most talented comedian SNL has discovered, he was by far the funniest. And this era among the most memorable as his sketches always show up on SNL specials. The whole show revolved around him for practically 3 whole years.
84-87 Murphy left to do movies, show started sucking again. Celebrity guests were brought in (like Billy Crystal, Harry Shearer, Martin Short) to try and give it some omph, but the writing was just too weak.
87-92 was when I started watching SNL, and considered by many the most talented cast ever, as it shows when ALL of them are doing bigger, better things now. Myers, Carvey, Hartman, Dennis Miller (BEST WEEKEND UPDATE THAT EVER WAS AND EVER WILL BE), Kevin Nealon.......the skits were so numerous, quirky, and memorable.
93-97 was the worst years ever. Golden cast left to do movies....leaving wet-behind-the-ears cast to try and pick up the pieces. Farley, Spade, Meadows, Sandler et. al did their best, but I've never considered them funny. Well, they're funny in a "ha ha" funny, but nothing that blasts me out of my seat laughing so hard my stomach hurts funny. The writing got really bad too. Skits dragged on for too long and for no reason, repeating the same mono-dimensional joke to no applause or laughter from the crowd. I stopped watching regularly during this time period because the show just wasn't interesting anymore. It was like a chore to sit through and watch another stupid episode of Farley falling on his ass while yelling some damn thing. Norm McDonald's deadpan delivery was the only thing worth watching.
98-2001: Lorne Michaels decides to clean house. Gets rid of the stale cast funking up the previous half decade, and brings in completely new unknowns. And it still wasn't all that funny. I mean, come on. Okay: I get the Cheerleader skit, but its one joke getting recycled over and over again. And it wasn't even funny the first time. Please don't have a new episode of those stupid twits every friggin' weekend. This is really before Will Farrell hit his stride too. He's kind of uneven and spotty at times......hasn't quite yet smoothed his performance. But he's the only guy that kept getting better as the years wore on. Cheri O'teri was fucking annoying in everything she did. Molly Shannon was stupid. Tim Meadows was just Tim Meadows (for the longest running cast member in SNL history, he sure is a forgettable one). Chris Kataan and Bill Hammond can be better if given better writing, but it was just so weak.
2001-present: I haven't really been paying attention to what the current cast is doing because I don't watch it all that much anymore, but I don't really see much notable improvement. Mad TV seems to be punchier, funnier, and more risque.
Another trend I see is the quality of humour. I noticed how many skits today have a kind of "Talk Show" format, where the characters are talking into the camera. Just average people, though, kind of borrowing influences from Wayne's World a decade earlier, but the skits aren't as amusing as Wayne & Garth were.
It's just that the targets of most of the humour seems to be college students and frat-houses. That is....low-brow. What I liked about oldskool Saturday Night Live were the skits that were odd and made no sense at all, but were funny simply for the weirdness and avant-garde flavour to them. Like Sprockets immediately comes to mind. A skit like that would never fly today, because nobody would understand it. But it was a perfect ploy on 80s east german bohemian intellectualism (complete with Kraftwerk musical score!) that would fly right over the heads of most people today.
And that's the thing that kind of unnerves me about SNL. Before their target audience was probably 20-30-somethings (as one of the original shows mandates was "Giving people an excuse to stay in on Saturday Night", though I haven't heard the show utter that line for years), but now its mostly directed at teenagers. So obviously the humour becomes less dry and subtle, and more over-the-top, obvious, prat-falling, loud and obnoxious.
And I really hate Jimmy "this is so funny I can hardly contain myself" Fallon. Must that stupid goof try so hard not to burst out laughing in every skit he's in? Weekend Update is weak, mostly because a lot of Tina Fey's jokes are getting panned from Fark and other internet comedy sites that do it with far more zing since they don't have censors to worry about.
No. What SNL needs is what always rescued it in the past: a superstar to emerge and make the show funny all on his own. No, Will Farrel is not the answer. He's good in a supporting, soundbite role (before he gets overbearingly annoying and hence unfunny), but not as a lead.
If it weren't for Robert Smigel's cartoons, Saturday Night Live probably wouldn't be on the air anymore.
Crap, this post is long. I'm going to shut up now.
