View Full Version : "GROOVE" good movie or bad...

i, along with a packed theatre last night witnessed yet another attempt to document and make accesible parties and the "scene" to the public. my mom read a review in newsweek about it and now wants to gp see it because she said it might allow her to see what i have been doing with all my late nights the last seven years...which i will gladly take her to it (as well as sundazed as soon as it gets started)
why? cause I BELIEVE that this movie was quite good in what it attempts to do...that is portray parties in a neutral light (like trainspotting did with herion) the movie shows the fake bliss, the connections people feel (sober and high), the drugs and their affects (good...the pleasurable e high, the bad being the kid REALLY fucked up on ghb, and the god damn nitrous kids) the mini drama of romance in a party, the connection you feel with strangers, the "fake" conversations we sometimes have, the dj worship, the unity of dancing together, the BEAUTIFUL AND NEEDED BLISS OF CHILL ROOMS (sorry, being a downtempo dj here, i am quite biased on that) the problems with cops and finding spaces, and why one promoter would through free ($1 each person actually) parties...
ok...i really liked this movie...i was prepared to hate it, i went there expecting something like "go", which made parties look pretty fucking stupid IMO...i still like that movie though images/smilies/smile.gif
favorites parts of the movie...
~when the kid writes love on the pissy guys arm and the pissy guy writes freak on raver boys arm, and the expression on his face
~the two gay boys and their conversations as they get lost
~the nod
~the ta getting recognized at the party..."i'd like to buy a vowel..." "A or E?"
~the music when first time boy tells everyone to come to his house for breakfast.i have that record!
~when layla tells first time boy about her friend on the subway, and the way it subtlely addresses the need for a balance in your life with parties and everything else..
over all...i liked it...long post...just wondering what your opinion on it was...
ciao!

I saw it tonight. It was awsome. It made me want to go out and dance. There were parts in that movie when I was able to say, I've seen/felt/done that b/f.
"the god damn nitrous kids"
Don't be get down on the hippie crack.
"I'd like to by a vowel"
I'm going to have to try that at the next party I go to.
The kandi kid w/ the red wig was f#ckin' halarious.
Mad props to the downtempo.
O.k. I'm done for now

i didn't like it that much. i thought it
made 'rave' seem superficial & pointless.
maybe if the promoter had given more of a reason for his desire to put together events than 'the nod' i wouldn't have gotten irked.
there were some scenes which rang true & i loved the shots of san francisco...
but overall, i'm not understanding why it's so highly rated both within & outside the 'rave scene'.

I liked recognizing some of the songs they played in the movie, it made me feel connected in some weird way... Like when you're at a party and they play some great song that you know amidst the new and unfamiliar and you're just like, YES!!! I went home and listened to the "sick" song that Digweed played at the end of the movie.

blah kim, you can be so jaded and such a downer sometimes.
what more is there to throw parties than to make other people happy? is it some how revolutionary? did it make it trivial? in your mind. think outside the box.
by giving joy to others freely you are able to make other people happy, and this not only makes you a better person, but it also makes it worthwhile.
the sense of joy that is gained from someone who thanks you for providing them with a place to explore their inner selves as well as meet nice people, in an intimate enviorment, that is obviously not for profit.
i would think that the nod summs that up right there.
look deeper-
i also thought how they showed the "newbie" brother on his first time on e opening up, emotionally, was pretty fucking cool.
didnt remind me of my first time, but made me realize that there are some pretty damn postive aspects of mdma, which you wont hear me say often.
i left that movie smiling and energized and realizing that the scene doesnt have to be all negative.
kick ass movie.
to bad the mainstream wont get most of the humor.

i didn't like "the nod" scene, because it seemed like a bad movie cliche.
same with the cheesy "the party isn't over until the last record spins" scene.. it made me groan.

I think there were serious cheese aspects of the movie, but overall I thought it was great. It was by far the most accurate portrayal of the rave scene that I've ever seen, and I believe that's what made it so great. There were countless inside raver jokes in that movie.
I loved the Red Bull scene.

I have yet to figure out (to my self) weather i liked the movie or dident.. After it was done it sort of left me with this empty feeling.. like "why did i watch that" and "why did i like it". It made me feel like i was at home in the good ol SF bay! and it was the most accrate presentation of the SF rave seen (accept for a few parts)that i have seen to day. but.. avrage acting. and no real plot.. but ill definatly pick it up on dvd once it comes out.. burned of course!; )

i have to agree with **soundboy**. i left the theater with half a smile, knowing, and understanding (and enjoying the music), but still kind of empty and indecisive about whether i liked it or not. but i have to say, there were some pretty amusing lines and scenes in that movie images/smilies/smile.gif *s*

i might take my mom to see it. images/smilies/smile.gif

in reply to marshie-
that wasnt oakenfold. that was digweed.
and- john has been known to when he is in the states......play afterparties for free or for fun- as well as play free parties if he knows the person isnt going to try to capitalize on it....
sure- hes a big name dj.
but people like garth, jeno, and markie and thomas got their start in the scene (not really to build a crowd, and a name) by doing free parties.....
there are people out there that are "big namers" that are willing to play for free.

Uhhmm.. It was alright.. It made more bored though.. cause I've seen all that before.. been there done that.. and watching it one big screen did'nt make it anymore interesting...
BUT I did like the way it was very realistic. It was'nt exaggerated or dramatized at all. It's exactly how a party is! I expecialy liked DJ Snaz... cause I could totally relate with him. Except with the part where he's kissing digweeds ass.. I thought that was pretty lame...
yeah that whole "till the last record spins" was WAY cheezy...
but all in all it was alright... very unbiased...

no one should be aloud to see groove without then seeing modulations.
I think
I know this girl who wanted to go to parties based on the movie groove which she really liked, this same girl fell asleep on my couch while modulations was playing.
certain people need to get a fucking clue.
of course i havent seen groove and am not passing judgement on it. Although it looks dumber than snot. Why does it look dumber than snot? cause everyone looks the same.

I expected it to blow (the movie Go! comes to mind)
In the end I found it to be an entertaining movie with some stereotypical laughs. (which i believe that was what they were aiming for) Therefore I would say the movie was good.

i liked was the music they were spinnin. the could identify with the DJin'(except for that DJ snaz asskissin' as well) but thats mostly because my hard earned money gets dropped on wax instead heavy cover charges.
The "can i buy a vowel" thing was pretty hilarious though but i agree that it didn't really put a purpose behind the whole thing.

i liked it and i think anyone who thought it was horrible is jaded beyond repair.
why?
because it showed things that people actually do + feel during a party. trying to find a ride thru a mailing list on hyperreal, watching some kid who took too much ghb, laying in a chill room and talking, feeling disoriented the first time you're on drugs at a party, chuggin' the redbull, how a whole room can just go off on a certain beat.
a lot of people have experienced that.
and i don't see any reason a promoter would throw a party except for "the nod". he throws them because he knows it's going to make someone have a better day/night. because it makes people happy.
and if that's not a good reason to throw one, i sure as hell don't know what is.

I thought it was an ok flick, it is definitely a way to patch through to people who aren't involved in this to get some sort of understanding of what goes on...
for those who live the life, it works its way like a cheesy 80's movie...which may have been sort of the point, but still....sheez!
I'd rather be watching Human Traffic
I did find it interesting that now all the DJ's that were in Groove are asking for a -lot- more money now to play gigs...like a couple thousand more..
then again it's a pretty impressive thing to put in your promo pack

This movie was a joke.
While I liked its attempt at portraying raves and ecstasy in a positive light, it cheesed out way too much for my tastes.
The guy who played the promoter was a HORRIBLE actor wand seemed more into the image than the character. The "nod" comment was insipid and pretty much every other line that came from his mouth was equally contrived.
The love story between the newbie guy and the seasoned girl was silly. Although I did like the portrail of the e-tarded couple. It gave the story its only sense of weight and realism.
Over all tho I was very dissapointed.
I still have yet to see a good American rave flick.

Take a look at the date that question was posted, quite some time ago this post was originally created.
As for my opinion about the film, I enjoyed it. I definately felt it was honost, nothing flashy nothing extraordinary. It brought across an image of what a rave truely is. I actually just went and picked up a used copy on vhs so that I'd have a copy on hand if I want to share w/ an outsider what its like to go to a 'rave'. I also picked up Human Traffic, cuz imo thats the funniest movie related to club culture out on the market right now (nice one brotha!)

i think the movie slurped it up big time
i mean really, did you guys really pay attention to this movie
ok i will admit i sort of liked it the first time but then again i was really fucked up and it was a monday night so go figure
i agree with g-kim it does make the scene look artifical and shallow
and for alot of people the scene may be but i think for many kids out there the scene has more meaning
so in conclusion if you started partying this is the movie for you but if you have been around for awhile then it does seem dumber than a box full of rocks

All in all I thought that this was a pretty good movie. probably the best movie out there about raving. It gives people a look into what the scene is really about. The newbie dooing it for the first time, the candy kid, showing how people can go insane to the music. Also the stupid people out there like the nitrous kids. So all in all I thought it was a pretty good movie.

what a movie... and yes for the red bull scene, but even more, is the kid that dj's and tries to switch over to the next record and then blows it in front of the hot girl, but then later like i think before digweed's set, he totally blasts it and everybody goes nucking futs......

I dont see how anyone could not like it. This movie summed up the "underground" rave scene PERFECTLY.
There were sooooo many inside jokes and situations that were just *dead on* It truely brought back memories from "the good old days"
Everything from getting a ride from strangers off the internet... to the redbull... to Polywog zoned in the chillroom... to "The Nod".
I think that is what made the movie for me right there... THE NOD. Oh my god... I almost fell out of my chair because i was laughing so hard (and simulatanously almost crying)...
THAT IS WHY *I* THROW PARTIES. (and im not joking either)... After *EVERY* really good party... there is always someone who comes up and says "thank you"... how their life is transformed... that they didnt know parties could be like that...
and their are others you dont know... who look... and make this special kind of eye contact... a deep emotional eye contact that sends you a telekentic emotive message that words could never do justice to. and they smile... and nod... and you nod back... and you know in your heart you have altered this persons life... forever.
