being an alaskan, i think i have a sometimes unique perspective on the whole drilling for oil on ANWR deal. regretably i haven't really been able to keep up with current news (if there actually has been any) about the whole deal (damn college "bubble").
so if this is all a done deal already i guess you can just ignore this and go on your merry ways.
but in the meantime on with the pseudo-political nonsense!
right off ill tell you that im AGAINST the decision to drill for oil in the alaska wildlife refuge. but not for the retarded reasons most of the environmentalists give.
for one, drilling is not going to harm any wildlife as long as its done properly as has been done in the past. the fucking migrating caribou arent going to give a flying fuck if they drill on a couple thousand acres. secondly, while it might well be pristine (defintion: undisturbed, pure) it sure as hell aint PRETTY. the coastal plains are about the LAST place in alaska you'd want to visit. looks like someone shat it out.
however, the conservatives have a lot of bullshit arguments as well. they want to reduce our dependancy on foreign oil and relieve rising oil prices blah blah blah. well thats all fine and dandy. but they keep talking like we're gonna be able to pull this oil out of the ground tomorrow, and its going to take at *least* 5-7 years before a single drop of it makes it to market. furthermore, at peak production it'll relieve maybe 10% of the foreign dependancy on oil we have right now.
there are plenty of other issues from either side, all just as dumb on one level or another. but for me, basically it comes down to the fact that the bush administration wants to talk out of both sides of its mouth when it comes to conservation and oil production. they had an opportunity to raise the mandatory milage for SUVs from around 20 mpg to 27 mpg and didnt take it. but he's still concerned about the environment folks. really.
you can almost SEE the hand of big oil in the bush admin's right pocket and the automotive industry's hand in the left pocket. its sick. until they can come up with some sort of MEANINGFUL energy bill and plan for the conservation of the environment, it just seems to me that the bush admin is going to burn the oil just as fast as they can yank it out of the ground.
i know that this issue isnt nearly as interesting as it may have been a couple months ago seeing as we all have more pressing things on our minds now (ie. making sure all our buildings are standing from day to day)
but just the same, cast your mind back about 6 months and see if you can tell me what you think. im interested.
