I'm going to reiterate some points on getting booked/establishing a positive image.
"I'll spin for free" is a big No-No, per se, in the world of promotion and dj booking. Unless, a) you are a big name DJ, in which case this is considered being cool or b) you owe someone a favor, but again are at least an established dj. There are exceptions of course, but coming out right off the bat as saying "I'll spin for free" makes you sound desperate. While this may get you booked at a house party, or at an event in Dixie, WA, it doesn't fly too well with more established promoters. Broadcasting that message over the net isn't a great idea.
The hard truth to this scene is that it is saturated in POLITICS. It requires an infinite amount of patience and dedication to actually "make it". Unless you have references from other DJ's or promoters, you won't be able to get booked at a sizable event (i.e. Naf or FX) without a demo and at least a year of experience (some promoters require at least 2 years if you have no references).
Getting your name on a flier will only account for about 1/1,000,000 of credibility - it will get your foot in the door, but establishing a positive image among other djs and promoters by actually meeting them and talking with them is the absolute best way for a young dj to get booked. Period. It's a harder longer process, but if it was easy then everyone could do it.
Give it time, get a demo, and shop it around in person rather than on the net.
* - as a side note, I am a professional Dj, I've played everywhere from Vancouver, Canada to L.A., and have good working relationships with djs from every corner of the earth. so i do know what I'm talking about.
Hope this helps.
Peace

well i appreciate your advise but you should have read my profile..you would have seen that i have been doing this for awhile....i have worked with NAF....i have worked with USC.... im staged with "Off Tha Hook Records" and i am a leading Partner in "Rainbow City Productions"...i have already established a very stable name and usually need no introduction but all the same i appreciate the fact that you would look out for another DJ....thats pretty cool and i give you props + alot of respect for that. The thing is right now im just trying to spin one party anywhere....mainly i am looking for a benefit or something along those lines......normally i would charge a fee but right now im not concerned with...make sense????? :D  :D

it's all good i did not take offense or anything...just trying to make point being that no matter what the field of profession is it always requires an extreme amount of dedication to ever accel so if that means performing for free that goes to show that your willing to apply yourself 100%...so i guess speaking as a DJ and a Producer i see what you are saying but i beleive that dedication and flexability show more about your overall performance then anything

dj pinktriangle -
um...actually you need to read into the context of the message before you take the liberty of pasting it into a thread that it has no relevancy. a) you'll notice that Optimus didn't beg for someone to book him...he stuck to the facts, simply that he was available for booking and a way to get a hold of him. That's being a professional. b) offering advice isn't talking shit - telling someone they suck is talking shit. c) technical skill can take you a long way, but it won't take you all the way...and you can argue that point until your blue in the face, but the plain and simple truth is that there is a lot more to being a DJ than just spinning records. It's like a mini- version of Hollywood, in a sense. d) why do you automatically assume I'm a guy?

mine too!!!
Anyways to the point yes it is probably unprofessional to say I'll play for free or what not but you know some people over look the money fact and want to be heard weather they get paid or not I think maybe you should try not to look so desperate on a board for people who say I'll play anywaher anything for free blah blah but instead say I'm a new or upcomming dj I have a demo anyone intrested in a demo drop me a e-mail then let them hear it and go from there weather you work for free or not thats my opinion on trying to get yourself booked weather you play foir free or not should not matter send them the demo then say hey I'll play for free cause I know all promoters like the word free especially small promoters
