Alright, I know I'm not B/S/Ting anything in this post, but I figured this would be the best forum b/c al you fooz seem to know what's what.
So I just wanted to know, opinon-wise, what the best (affordable) programs, soundcards, and equipment were for recording music on an IBM format. My friend has like, sound factory, or some bullshit, but I dunno. I'm used to the whole 4-trk methood of DIY mid-fi home recordings.
anyway, tell me watcha think.

CoolEditPro or CubaseVST are great software, but expensive. ...of course you don't HAVE to pay, just spend an evening searching the net. As far as hardware goes, you can get a SoundBlaster Live pretty cheap and it will get the job done. Apparently, you can also modify them for extra i/o's.
for just recording or for producing? for recording you can use something like acid or cool edit, or even just the basic windows wave editor. Generally for recording, I just plug my mixer into my soundcard (sb live) and use cool edit to handle the recording and basic editing. Works fine for most things.

Cool edit's pretty good, I'm happy with it anyway.

I may be able to get a copy of SAW Pro in your e-mail... retails for around $950, far better then say cool edit pro, cubase is nice too. I have it on my computer, and no problems at all, e-mail me.

I checked out that goldwave shit. It seems a little less than I need. Not to be snobbish or anything, but I don't think you can sequence with it, can you? The screenshots looked wispy.

( i will defend any slander of trackers with my life..)

there is a post in the questios comments forum about getting a dedicated producer thread..check it if you think it need to be

I have SAWPro right now, and it's cool, but I can't sequence anything yet. I don't have a mic, so I was trying to sequence a few wav I already had on my computer, but It wouldn't play 'em. I'll just go to their troubleshooting site.

saw is a stupid program. you have to make sure that you save everything in the correct format. instead of saving sound files as wave format it helps to save them as a saw sound file format. also make sure that your edit list file is being saved as a saw edit list file. as for sequencing, you should try a program with a midi studio.

heres a good place for finding a LOT of audio programs Thrax (http://thrax.box.sk/) scroll 1/2 way down and click on software.
And for cracks / reg codes ect... if it exists, type the name of the program in Here (http://www.mauisun.org/astalavista.html) and you'll find it.
Have fun.
and yes we do need a section for audio producers / engineers, would be very helpful. heh. I'm prety much figuring everything out on my own.....

Well I use cakewalk and acid 2.0 and it works pretty good for me and if you dont have much money I would suggest starting out with a good computer then acid, fruity loops, and a some good sample discs and when you learn that get a keyboard and some good modules the more knobs the better.

hey,, if you think you are a hard ass and can take on a decent program.. get buzz tracker.. try it for 3 months WITHOUT listening to any songs made on it demo or otherwise.. than once you think you got it down.. listen to what other people are doing with it..
the better the program, the steeper the curve, the wetter the tears.. c'mon.. buy some makers mark and get dirty..

Yeah, trying to record on your computer in general is not quite easy, for me anyway. It's nothing like using a fourtrk and pressing the rec button. It's like a combination of computer savvyness, and logic, and not having a shitty computer.

I use Logic and Wavelab myself.
Wavelab's real nice just for recording in one track at a time and really easy to work with for mastering purposes.
Logic would be god if you plan on doing any multitrack recording, only problem with that is you have to do some hunting if you want to use it on the PC now due to it being discontinued on the PC.
Cubase and Cakewalk are decent multitrack programs as well, I'm just a Logic fan myself and basically know Logic from the inside out better than the latter two.
If I were you just starting out though, I would get a decent Mac, and buy the Logic Gold Package on which you can pay installment payments to finally upgrade it to the Logic Platinum package.
