So, i'm AT SCHOOL, and i go to the office to pick up a copy of the school newspaper:Senior Edition (a coupla seniors willed stuff to me in their Senior Wills:P), and I walk out of the office. Right in front of me are the words 'RAVE', 'RAVE THEME PARTIES', and 'ECSTASY', among others, splayed across a huge billboard at the intersection of senior and junior hall. During class, i went and picked up one of the 'information flyers' left there, and this is what it had to say (the capitalized are as exactly read from the paper)
**beginning of article**
WARNING: ECSTASY IS HARMFUL IF INGESTED
Portland police are concerned about ecstasy use at RAVE gatherings. One tablet of ecstasy is able to dump all of a persons serotonin leaving the body dehydrated and without control of body temperature. Neuron transmitters malfunction causing muscle spasms and jaw clenching. Impaired judgement occurs and at some point the body's ability to ever feel good again with or without drug use is destroyed.
Ecstasy tablets are disguised as candy like candy necklaces, skittles, and sweet tarts or like children's vitamins and they smell like black licorice. After an initial 6-7 hour high energy, dancing, feels good, "lovey-dovey" stage there is a post trip crash with a harsh comedown and a 3-24 hour hangover that can continue for days to weeks.
Rave or Theme Parties happen almost nightly in Portland. The pull is the music with good disc jockeys, lights, dancing, and fellowship. The sponsers rent a warehouse, maybe security, and make good money charging admission and inflated fees for water. Ecstasy is purchased amidst the dancing by passing money from one person to another with the drug being passed back by the same route. Since the drug dealer is unknown the sponser is not responsible. A drug tester may even be provided to test the night's pills but the quality and ammount of the drug in the pill remains unknown.
Ecstasy is currently the number one drug of choice in Portland. There is significant potential harm to anyone who uses it. Meth breaks out the back of the body the following day as acne on the face and back. Risks include liver damage, irreversible brain changes, long term depression, anxiety, memory loss, and paranoia.
PLEASE KNOW what you kids are doing this summer.
***end of article***
There is another bulletin board like this right outside of the lunch room. I just happened to be wearing my 'God is my Dj' shirt today, too, so a coupla kids were like 'OMG Amanda did you see the announcement board!?' The school nurse put it up at the request of a student, who i guess their friend has tried it and got concerned. WHY MAKE IT PUBLIC?! Can't you just be a nice person and do some Yahoo-ing to make your friend smart?! Made me and a couple of people look like a total ass is what it did. So the school nurse and the drug/alcohol counseler better make time to talk to me sometime this week :)
*AmAnDa...........is pissed....*
you read the bulletin  ha :P
j/k
heh...my school i sbetter than that :p

Typically, reporters should be citing some sort of reference for their information. Challenge the story. Talk to whomever the faculty advisor for the paper is. Humiliate the writer by pointing out inaccuracies. Laugh when she has no sources, or the sources don't contain the information she references to them.
If her sources are all government-based (and I bet they are, in fact I'll bet most of her "sources" are 20/20 expisodes she vaguely remembers), attack her for having such a weak and biased information base.
Don't let them publish whatever they want and get away with it.

Nah, even better............this lady is a fully grown adult, does not list her resources, AND......she typed this paper herself. Bitch. I already told Sue to tell her the next time she comes in to call me up there to talk to her.
Also.....this isn't just the flyer thats being handed out....the flyer is for the taking underneath the NEON COLLAGE of those words, cut out in cute lil' shapes on construction paper, taking up an entire board......otherwise i wouldn't have caught it.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA stupid, stupid people...
and at some point the body's ability to ever feel good again with or without drug use is destroyed.
HAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHA what!
Ecstasy tablets are disguised as candy like candy necklaces, skittles, and sweet tarts or like children's vitamins and they smell like black licorice.
WTF!??! the part that baffles me the most (although the whole article is baffling) is "black licorice"???? where the hell did they get that one!!
Ecstasy is purchased amidst the dancing by passing money from one person to another with the drug being passed back by the same route.
I envision a line of like 20 people passing money and pills back and forth HAHAHAHAHHA
Meth breaks out the back of the body the following day as acne on the face and back
what?
"Theme Party" HAHAHAHAHHAHAHA

WERD, HexRei!
Amanda, don't let these people get away with such silly sensationalism. True, E is not harmless, but if people are going to post that kind of shit, someone needs to let them know what's up. My advise? If the board is public, create your own informative flyer publicizing the real harms of E. Site sources, preferably ones that are taken more seriously than DanceSafe (who's research is very accurate, but they are seen by many to be "pro-E", which makes them less reliable to some people). You will find that the American Journal of Medicine and other similar publications have very unbias information on the drug. Emphasize the fact that there is no scientific proof that E causes long-term damage to the brain, and that the danger of E is not E in and of itself, but E mixed with other drugs or taken in extreme excess. If your article is written more intelligently and accurately than the school nurse's (or whoever it was), it will not only catch the attention of potential E users, but it will also make the author of the original article look like an idiot. Good luck!!! Give me a hollar if you have any questions. Hell, I'd even write the damn thing for you ( I kind of miss being in school :D ).

and the party was here before the drugs.
I strongly doubt this. I'll bet you anything that when clubs and discos were first turning into rave parties, there were plenty of drugs present.
The drugs may not be a requirement, but they are/were definitely a strong component.

the most inacurate part of the article is where it states that E is the drug of choice in PDX... closely followed by the description of what E looks like.
both of those are mod points and irrelevant to the great amount of truth to that posting.
I'll grant that it's not promoting extacy use, but that isn't the school's job anyway. the school's job (in this day in age, weather or not you agree with it) is to get you NOT to do drugs. and compared to DARE and similar scare tactics, this posting does a very good and truthful job of that.
references would be nice, but just because they're not there doesn't make this propaganda - it just makes it poor literature/journalism.

Good looking out and keeping us all well-informed of such examples of idiocy. I don't believe anything until I read the footnotes, and even then I tend to be skeptical---and of course with this topic we know how misinformed this woman is. Piss on drug fallacies!

hot tub: i wasn't saying the article was good or accurate.. i was simply asking a question. Call me a fool or whatever else you like, your opinion of me means nothing to me.
Instead of just beating down on every article that talks about the evils of e, why not do something about it (instead of laughing at people and calling them fools)and inform people on what you see as being the truth and accurate/usefull information. Ignorance is just as bad as propaganda
When one of your loved ones dies from taking e... come talk to me and we will see who the fool is.
Blah blah blah...

i just thought i'd bump this, because as i walked out of the office at school, i looked up to see the brightly colored collage of those words once again. the nurse is back.
last year, when this happened the first time, i wrote something back and corrected some of her misinformation, posting it on the bulliten board right next to hers. of course, this time around, only hers is present. i'm pretty sure i still have my rebuttle saved on my computer, so i might have to post it up there again.
theres also a brand new poster along with it that has some kids pictured looking all sad-like, and the word "crack" sprawled across the top. dont know what thats all about...
this is really frusterating to me... people in scappoose dont know any different, and their minds arent open to possibilities of things like that the district nurse might not be right. i guess we'll have to see where this time takes us.

Having gone through similar situations just different issues I'd have to say that this is a never ending battle. All that you can do is be smart and post correct information from reliable resources. If you do this in a responsible and respectful way I'm sure there are some literature or current events teachers that may even be willing to give you some outside credit if you are truely willing to do the research and get accurate information. Don't defend the substance just give an accurate account. Good luck to you.

This is fucking bullshit, I hate it when people come misinformed, or even worse, intentionally misinform people like that.
I was watching this documentary on Marijuana and why it was made illegal and it was because of some scandelous shit like that. This one guy named anslinger or some shit who was the drug commissioner at the time, sent around a petition around to all fifty states urging them to sign to make some kind of law against Marijuana.
The information he gave to each state pretty much goes like this, Marijuana makes you go crazy, it is worse than coke, it is worse then speed, it is worse than alcohol, etc. Then when people had questions about that he started telling the states that Marijuana usage led to heroin addiction in 9 out of 10 users.
Upon hearing this some people began to study marijuana and see if these things were really true, well the drug comissioner didn't like that, so in the 1930's I believe, he banned studies on marijuana. Leaving the populations opinion to be shaped by the government to this present day, fucking crazy huh, there's more to it, if you wanna check it out it's called "grass" peace

Hah-I knew you were going to bump this, Des:) Almost looked like I was about to cry in the office this morning, huh? Just..........this has REALLY bad timing for me personally, not to mention it's fucking retarded all around. But THIS YEAR, I've already composed (and in fact typing as we speak, but checking the board at the same time) a personal letter to this vicious cunt that is giving us a bad name. I was.....FIRMLY polite in telling her off, and not like I need to explain myself to the misinformed bitch, but the letter basically reads like my high school resume for college admissions, so that she has a crystal fucking clear understanding of the people that might-and might not-attend a rave.

you should print out a bunch of your responses and staple them to all of the school nurse's pamphlets....so that anyone who reads that garbage will have a sensible and truthful retort to refer to once theyre done reading her propoganda.
Neuron transmitters malfunction causing muscle spasms and jaw clenching.
umm... this is SO wrong I don't even know where to start....
MDMA makes your synaptic vesicles in your axons pick up more serotonin than normal... thus flooding the synaptic cleft with serotonin... heightening the amount of serotonin that binds to the next neuron
there is no such thing as a neuron transmitter
Serotonin is a "neurotransmitter", a natural thing in your brain... that has absolutely NOTHING to do with muscle spasms and jaw clenching...

Our nurse is a neuroitc fool. Seriously. I'm so pissed though that someone stole that "crack shatters lives" poster before I could hang it up proudly on my bedroom wall. *waah* You get her tho amanduh, tell her how misinformed she is. I, on the other hand, will take the childish approach to the situation and write "you're a fag" all over her bulletin board in black permanent marker. Then I'll throw kandie beads at her and say they are covered in lsd. Kick ass.
I hope ever single person realizes that all cases of acne are caused by meth use. Weird....

That made me laugh sooooooo hard!!!!! I'm still laughing. Mainly because I can picture you doing that, hahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!! Ahhhh good times. *gigglesnortgiggle* Poor you. Nathan stole the poster before you could get to it.
On another note, I stuck a letter in the bitchs box in the school office. And she hasn't said anything to me yet-I signed my name, and told her if she had any questions, to get ahold of me through the school office. I was all kinds of polite bitch to her in the letter-I hope she got the point. I also ripped off the bright construction piece of paper that said "RAVES" across it from the board. Grr.
