Ive been spining for about 1 1/2 yrs.And now I am finally getting to practice more advanced moves and techniques. :D (dj persona!).I love Energetic djs that are really excited about there music.Like Myphisto Odyssey When does a judo kick at the same tim he slams the cross fader over that shit is wicked.Or when Jimmy Hoffa starts a mix then backs away from the tables and looks at them like they are alive and Mixing themselves. :o When Lil mz Booty shakes that booty mmmmm! anyways what were talking about? Oh yea, spinbacks are tight also. so id just like some ideas....Dj SkEptiK p*l*u*r*

I like playing two dnb records at the same time, past the breaks... so that the basslines are going... but I cut out one of the basslines with the mixer.

Then, at an ideal moment, I turn down the first bassline, and bring in the other. It sounds neat methinks.

I like playing 2 copies of a record and juggling the same part of the chorus or lyric; for example "Find A Way" by A Tribe Called Quest:

"Messin' me up my whole head" table 1
"Messin' me up my whole head" table 2
"Messin' me up my whole head" table 1

You get the idea. I do that about 3 or 4 times and then turn around so that my lower-back is touching the crossfader and I throw my right arm over my left shoulder and left arm over my right shoulder and cue back the record while using my lower back to move the crossfader back and forth.

It's dope and took me awhile to learn. Beat juggling is another cool trick but I'm not going to get into all that right now. :)

My favorite (yet stressful and not even planned) technic when spinning is when I go out onto the dancefloor and start dancing to one of my records, then towards the end of the song I suddenly snap out of it, exclaim, "OH SHIT! I have to mix!!!," run back to the tables, and manage to mix into the next track without any problems. :D

Great toopic! I like to find people in the crowd that are really into it and go at the decks like I'm playing the music just for them. I'll dance and just move all funky like behind the decks in coordination with the tweak-out of the mix intensifying it until the break at which time I'll be trying not to bump the tables cause I'm dancing so hard back there. Anxiety for the break, cutting the bassline out for extended periods of time, and then start teasing by bringing it in a little bit at a time and then blasting it right at the right moment. Just then I pull my arm back like the drum roll leading to the break is a grenade that I throw into the crowd and it explodes in the form of pounding beatz! Well not really, I've never spun at a party but that's the kind of stuff I'll do as soon as I start doing shows. I think crowd interaction is a big plus.

I like it when a dj has a progressive beat going on, something like a hardhouse or trance beat that machinegun rattles, and while that record spins, he/she takes the volume control on the other deck (crossfader is directly in the middle), and is just playing a straight 4/4 beat. Okay, so while that progressive beat plays, the dj flips up the volume on the 2nd deck, and times it just right so it goes "THUMP!! THUMP!!", the progressive beat keeps rattling and the dj does it again "THUMP!! THUMP!!", and by now, the progressive beat exsplodes and the dj can mix in the other record. But I just love that trick...... :D

My favorite trick is when a dj is playing his record and he puts on another record then he places his nutsack on the crossfader and then scratches the upfaders with his penis. You get a really unique sound.

I got a nifty cool trick that someone should try!! :D (It's a fun way to get rid of records you don't like too!).

Play a record (preferably one you don't like) to start off your set.

Part way through, spontaneously take it off and throw it as far as you can, while exclaiming "WHEEEEEEEEEEEE!"

*or*

Take it off, scream at the top of your lungs, throw is as far up as possible, and run away. When people ask you what happened, just scream and run away again.

hehehe

I have always been partial to spinning the record backwards really fast. I know it's an age-old trick, but I love the sound it makes.

actually, on some other tables like the nice ass vestax ones, ive found that beatmatching you record, then reversing the platter and fading it in every now and then give it a cool sound. *shrug*

but im always down for some nutspin dickfading, too.

yeah, my trixx are pretty used already, but i'll just say sum of my favorites anywayz.. during the build up of a trance tune, four beats before the break, just slap the crossfader across to a breakbeat record, then slap it back, that always sounds good. and lesse, spinning two copies of the same record, one of them two or four beats behind the first one, and turn the second ones' bass all the way off, and then fade in and out of that one, while fucking with the EQ's the whole time, it sounds SO cool! it kinda echoes, and sounds nice and distorted. :) there are others, but they've all been said, i especially like the "step back and let them mix by themselves" that jimmy hoffa does, that was cool to see that, cuz i do that all the time, but i have no idea why, just nervousness i guess. hehe...

the dopest trick i saw was this guy scratching and he started to drool, the spit hung off his chin and hit the record. as soon as the drool hit the record there was a splash sound.

I'm a big fan of any of the really tight turntablist tricks. In the 1998 DMC World Finals, Prime Cuts (of the Scratch Perverts) did the sickest crab scratch I've ever seen...it just went on and on and on...totally solid.

As far as mixing techniques...
I really like stepping back and just letting the records spin together. It requires a leap of faith...if shit starts to go bad you can't just reach in real fast to fix it up. I also like to take a record with a long boring section and play little bits of other tracks over it. I have one record I can play about 3-4 other tracks over.

Prime cuts is phat I have the 99' Internation turnatablism federation champion video. Primcuts wins for best scratch artist. A-trak wins for overall turntablism techniques. He makes some tight beats and shit out of a stevie miller band song!
That video is tight dj realm is fuckin dope too!

I still like layering. When you find two tracks that are perfectly keyed and go together really well, and you turn both of them into one song. Take the vocal and bring it in to the build up the first one, stuff like that. I love hearing a set with perfectly smooth mixes between songs that just flow like they were meant to be played together.

I really really love energetic dj's. Probably why I love Donald Glaude so much. I also love it when a dj has their own style that you can distinguish from every other dj spinning the same genre. My pet peeve is when a dj just puts a vinyl on the table and just lets it spin for a while then change it. Like they don't get the crowd involved, or scratch it or add little ditties...just let it spin CAN'T STAND that...it's just not my style..but yeah...bye

if you wanna check out tricks you gotta check out turntablism. actually making music with turntables rather than just spinning someone else trax. plus the body tricks are ill as hell. not sure if anyone would get me if i dwelled further though. peace. TURNTABLISM4LIFE.

try mixing on 3 turntables with 2 records going at almost the whole time ;) that takes some skill depending on what kind of sounds you're trying to mix.

Or get into scratching. Nothing beats a good dj who can scratch somethin up with behind the back, over the neck, or something like that. Kinda like Bad Boy Bill's table trix.

You got to be careful about that though. I know of a girl DJ who did that and hit some guy in the head with her record. She didn't last very long at the club she was working at. :)

Ok, I've got a trick. I used to work at a club that had two dancefloors. Two DJs, one for each floor. The other DJ was sick one night so I was spinning on both floors at the same time. Had to time it just right running back and forth to make sure the other record never ran out. Kept it up for a couple of hours. What a pain in the ass.

it's nice when swamp sticks a pile of records on one table and then proceeds to scratch one then whip it out and scratch the next without ever using his other hand. then he smashes the record over his head! ha ha ha. what a maniac. I like to tweak the volume fader when I am mixing in a song with a heavier kick than the other track. And then cut out the kick entirely and then turn the bass up on the heavy record. then it goes whump whump whump!

Word to what Andrew Cox said, I love me some harmony mixing too. Also i like the long butter mixes that linger on for about 2 and a half minutes. That is when i back away from the tables with the fader in the middle and just close my eyes, drop my head, and smile and watch as the two records build and then fade one out ever so gently. That is by far my favorite trick, although i do like to scratch... another trick, a la Mark Farina, is to drop out the bass with the eq, and pump the high end twice, then throw the bass back over... i just never get enough of that... as for backspins..... well, we just won't talk about those...
