Ok, i'll admit i'm stumped by this one. Here's the script ::as it were::...
I've nuked linux and MBR on my old box (133 pentium, 24 meg RAM, SCSI HD) and am trying to install win98SE on it. I shoulda never uninstalled linux, but save the public burning for later, penguin lovers. I know my sin, i need help now. Here's the worst part: i get thru setup all the way into the logo screen "setting up windows for the first time"..pause in hard drive grinding away..my computer goes to black screen and the message " windows protection error. please restart computer" appears . I do as it says and restart, and it gets into loading himem.sys driver and the damn thing detects a 'bad memory error'. Now correct me if im wrong, but if i really had bad memory, wouldn't linux have said something too? At the very least, wouldn't have win98 setup detected it also? My real question is, how in the hell do i get Windows on my box? Yes, i know it will be slow. Yes, Winblows. Yes, I should put linux back on. I'm merely putting windows on becuz Samba bit the dust 2 weeks ago, and i haven't been able to do anything worthwhile on my network since. *g33k sob*

sounds like it could be 2 things:
you're using a SCSI hard drive, are you certain that your adapter is set to port 0 and that your hdd is on port 1? have you installed the SCSI bios? (not necessary, but it wouldn't hurt...)
it could also be a bad hdd sector.
if this is the case, you're gonna hear a lot of great ideas about how you can run this scary dos command or that bios hack. you might even get a brilliant suggestion from some genius about how to crack open your hard drive case and clean it off with a brillo pad and a brillo pad. er somethin.
take it from a pro who failed all of his A+ certs. download Boot-IT from www.download.com and let that script kiddy free prog do all the magic. its never let me down. =)
oh, and doesn't win98 require 32mb ram? heh, there's a third option, pop another stick in there and see if you have any love.
good luck.

haha! I was waiting for you two to respond. I now feel it appropriate to add Burnt somewhere into the Nwtekno Bible thread..but off to go tinker with those suggestions first.

what if i gave you gold plates that an angel (ok ok.. the tooth fairy) gave me in exchange for a chapter on you alone? I'll call it the "Lost Book of Burntziah". btw, Boot-IT rawks..but i already have PM for that uber-fun partition job later...I think i'll pop in 32 megs (of different memory, mind you) and feel da luv...or luv.exe..or luv.tgz..or../luv..or..u get the idea! =)
