[cue dusty wind blowing in desert]

[cue sage brush]

Blackdog: "There was a better time here, you know?"

[cue coyote howl]

Blackdog: "The last time I visited here--the town of mIRC--there was so much hussle and bussle sometimes you couldn't keep track of what was going on. The townsfolk were joyous and new people were joyously welcomed to the developing community within."

[cut scene: The town of mIRC, circa September, 2001, bustling community]
[cue laughter and chatting in the background]
Princess Kat: mmmmm beer!
sothis: Hey! It's all about the 151 dammit!
Trig: I got it awl right hea yo! I'll hook you up!
pdxmonk: Fuck! I've been here ten hours straight and the night crew is not here yet!
siddie: monk, you cant handle the night crew!

Blackdog: "Ah yes! Good times were abound back then. Arrangments and meetings made every minute, and each man or woman waiting to feel the excitement of the community day in and day out."

[cue supamisty plurring all over everyone]
[mAnimal--CENSORED--]

Blackdog: "Of course, bad people did come around every now and then, but the towns people had no problem extraditing them in order to keep the peace"

SuperPlurryFairy: HEY EVYONE! HOW MANY RAVES YOU BEEN TOO!
hd: wtf? Die you weirdo!
[cue hd slapping SuperPlurryFairy around with a trout]
SuperPlurryFairy: WHAT DID YOU DO THAT FOR--
[cue SuperPlurryFairy getting booted]
[cue Buttons humping hd's leg]
TeknoAXE: I'm lost. I think I hit the wrong button.

Blackdog: "Now days and months have gone by. Business and engagements kept me away for so long. Coming back was an eyeopener. "

[Cue mIRC ghost town, with dry rotted buildings and empty streets]

Blackdog: "About half the people that used to live in this once enjoyable and beautiful town have left town or been driven out. Why, I don't know. The most I can get out of people here, nowadays, is some obscure rumor about some newcomer taking over things or a sudden shift in power at the top of town mIRC. Even now it is noticable that some of the former top dawgs "no longer exist" in the memories of most around here."

[Cue winds whistling through empty streets].

Blackdog: "Now, nothing happens here. Nobody who remained here seems to want to talk to anyone. They're all just present, waiting like zombies while staring at each others name-tags. A couple times, things will brew up to resemble the way things used to be, but for the most part, the fire in this town has died."

Blackdog: "Maybe things will get better someday. A new generation is sure to come into town and shake it all up again. But for now, I think I must ride into the sunset. Goodnight ev'ryone!"

[end]

Lame.

Obviously you have found another waste of time activity instead of chat. But yes, Its sad indeed that most people went on to get lives...

*feels bad for AXE*

Yes, there's nothing more a waste of time than school, work and the national guard. Relax, yo, it's just something I wrote. Nothing more.

Eh, there are plenty of people who still use IRC, and the mIRC client is still wildly popular. It's just the nwtekno chatroom that's sort of lamed out... or is this already what you meant?

Well, since I only used mIRC for #northwesttekno, that's the setting Blackdog was describing.

Thats the funny thing about IRC country... if one 'town' [odd allegory for channels I've never encountered before and is therefore amusing] is boring or dried up you can happily hop to another, or even a different 'county' *cough* all together..

Now, nothing happens here. Nobody who remained here seems to want to talk to anyone. They're all just present, waiting like zombies while staring at each others name-tags..

Ah, the fate of all high-traffic channels.. The funny thing is, unless they're REALLY sad, the people you see idling all the time are not really there. Once a certain group of people has chatted enough, they stop paying attention all the time and just float in cyberspace. Its kinda interesting actually, to look at your IRC client that has been running for a week in a few different channels without your direct attention.. You can scroll back through the conversations and get event information, reviews, critiques, behind the scenes, random freshmaker whathaveyous. Its can be a lot more informative then this message board.. The chatting still happens, its just time delayed.

Obviously I'm an IRC whore. Well, I'm not now, but I used to be... I lost 1994-1996 to IRC. However, I'm still a big fan of the medium, and proud of it. Despite popular opinion, you dont have to be a lifeless geek to use IRC properly.... although at the beginning of your IRC career, it probably helps. ;p
