lol

Just when I thought they were over...

Dateline is in the middle of their "rave" report (not really on raves, but on [of course] ecstasy, acid, ghb, and special k).

The "brave young girl" who dared to venture into the world of raves is probably gonna get some glares tomorrow from phat pant wearin' party kids at her school. heh.

And I wanna move to Mesa, AZ.. a $5 party? damn. I wonder if that's the norm.

And what was up with the kids paying 5$ for a balloon to basically do whip-its? Why not go and buy some acid and get 10 hours worth of an high for 5$, as opposed to 30 seconds. Crackers...

Highlight of the report? The fact that the music was much better than the 60 Minutes and King 5 report. I could groove in my chair while laughing.

Someone taped this and I wanna project it onto the wall at the next party I help with (along with old "Saved by the Bell" episodes, yo) lol.

If anyone finds an e-mail address for Dateline, post it here and let me know =)

shit, that was fast. thanks =)

Totally random: But I loved the girl who's "boyfriend" of 2 hours was rubbing up against her. She started quoting a happy hardcore song.. which I can't quite remember right now. I want to say "shooting star". She burned herself with a cigarette on e and said it felt good. LOL

I love watching e-tards be cracked out. Fuck bird watching; e-tard watching is much funner.

What have they been doing to take action?

Remember in the report when the news guy was talking to the cop, and he said something along the lines of "Maybe you shouldn't sponser these club owners anymore.." or something like that.. and the cop just replied simply.. "sure"

heh.. suprised he didn't comment on it anymore.

What have they been doing to take action?

FX has been made 18+, promoters have been denied venues ("Beyond the Emerald City", for example), the TDO, etc.

I mean she could have been shot by a mad Exticy driven raver or even wors she may have made an actual friend (or even male friend) I bet that would freak her parents out. Thought it was esp funny how they showed the grls on E with boys kissing and touching and trying to scare all those daddys out there HAHAHAHA I can only laugh at it...mmm I wrote another post on this subject in more detale somewhere else already and dont want to retype it.

You know go ahead and put stuff on tv to scare parents, kewl less kids. Lie about drugs and how everyone is offering you some. I could care less. What really pissed me off, I was so mad I had to turn off my tv and leave the house. They are using us. Exploiting us, lying about us and what we love, for ratings. It is sweeps month. So the shows with the highest ratings get to charge their advertisers more. THAT IS SO FUCKED UP. I think it is really time that we took this shit way under. It has been one bad story after the next.

Want to know something funny though? The first decent article I read on raving in mainstream media was an article in some teeny bopper magazine called Jump. They actually talked about it being about the music and PLUR. WOW - how is it that award winning journalists can't make a story as well as some junk teen magazine??

OK,
this report really bothered me in a lot of ways.

1) They never should have called it or advertised it as a report about raves. The report was not about raves. The report was about DRUGS. They didn't talk about raves AT ALL except for a background for drug usage. Because, you know, that is the ONLY reason ANYONE would go to one of those damn rave parties, to DO DRUGS.
2) They didn't get into the culture.
3) They didn't get into the community.
4) Other than undercover reporting, they didn't interview ANY RAVERS. No one got a chance to stand up for the scene. They tried to interview promoters who turned them down. Well of course they turned them down. They risked there name being destroyed by a nosy news tabloid. Regardless of whether or not they did something wrong, their names would be destroyed. Suspicion is sufficient.
5) The last thing I wanna ask is, WAS THIS REPORT LEGAL? Is it legal to interview minors through hidden cameras and without theirs or parental consent and then broadcast it? Is it legal to interview anyone one like that and then broadcast it without telling them?

So the next time I go to a rave, do I have to look suspiciously at every 14-16 year old girl that says hi to me, to make sure she isn't wired? Or maybe I don't have to worry about that, just because I don't do drugs. Because you know, the only people who will end up on tv are the ones who do drugs.

I would like to say, to the program's credit, that I totally disagreed with the truck full of whip-its. What kind of a production company ("Drop and Roll" Productions?) would cart in a TRUCK FULL of whip-its to a party? Not only are they encouraging drug use, but they are encouraging what is probably the most dangerous of all the drugs present!

So anyways, that was my rant.
Love and Hugs,
angel

Angel brings up a point I meant to address in my original post...

I don't think it's legal for them to interview minors without their knowledge and put it on television like that. I would be all over Dateline's ass if they did that to me.

I'd be safe about getting busted on national television, though, since I always tell anyone I don't know I'm sober. No one's business buy my own what I choose to do that nite, unless I decide to tell them. bah.

Yuck! That show sucked....

dateline@nbc.com is an e-mail address...I sent a forward to a lot of people asking them to send Date line an e-mail explaining PLUR and genrally complaining about there story...I also e-mailed Dateline and went of for about 4 pages about how terrible it was!

If we all work together and do the same, e-mail dateline and such, maybe we can get the folks to air a story about the good stuff...but that would make them look stupid...probably never happen...but still, I am sure they will not like getting thousands of e-mails from angry ravers....

What did they expect when you send a preppy lookin girl into a rave? Did they think she would blend in? Of course dealers are gonna pick on the the unsuspecting newbie who naturally came because our friends the media tell everyone raves=lots of drugs

Ah well

Okay.. first thing's first.. there were some real Dumbasses doing the whippits there
you're supposed to sit down and support your back against something while inhaling nitrous, a loss of motor control is pretty much expected.. they were doing them standing up and falling on their asses.. morons :P. And yeah.. aside from the music being pretty dope in the background (especially that hard trance (acid trance?) going on when the girl passed out on nitrous), is it me or are these reports getting progressively worse? One thing I have noted.. they have yet to say anything bad about LSD.. cept that it's available :P
I love the term "rave drugs"
and from what they were finding.. basically every drug could be considered a "rave drug"
OH YEAH, and I loved how every conversation started with "are you rolling?"

And that girl.. being bothered by all the personal touch.. seems to be so standoffish that I don't think she'd even have fun at raves, unless she learns to enjoy being friendly with people. And recommending CURFEWS? Okay that's just messed :P

I gotta go to lunch so I'll make this quick=)

1) yes it is illegal, and yes those were minors they interviewed. A friend of mine lives in Mesa and he knows 2 of the kids that were shown that were spoken with in that humerous little report... and apparently they're suing! whoo hoo!!

2) through the bullshit muttle of PLUR, MOOK makes a good point I want to reiterate, and something I agree with (having dealt a little in my time)...
the media shows raves as being places of drugs and sex (and this IS what mainstream society and stupid high school kids think it is about), so when Preppy Jane and Bob (or G-funk, or punk-rawk or anyone) goes to a party for their first time, they EXPECT to do drugs (unless they know someone in the scene or have actually done real research on it first).... dealers know this! I know I approached all the preps and G's with my drugs long before I tried dealing to the old schoolers who were probably sober dancers anyway...

I don't deal anymore, btw. so shut the fuck up.

they find massives. the find kids who are on drugs. they blow it way out of proportion. fucking dateline is making the rave scene seem like the worst thing that will and has ever happened to kind. they want to promote this message like...drugs will kill you dont let you children out at night and watch out for those DAMN RAVERS. i noticed how they really focused in on E...every other line was "are you rolling". yes yes yes yes i am. and I LOVE IT. they focus in on the few bad things at raves on put it on national television. i wanna kick all their asses. grrr. but i love the rave scene and so do millions of other kids, so i know that a couple shows on tv putting raves down isnt going to make alot of people go "hmm..maybe i shouldnt go to raves anymore". the parties will always be there and they will always be great. the world needs to relize that.

The Media is like a bloodsucking leech. When it's sucked all of the blood from one victim, it moves onto another. This is exactly what's happening. Society today focuses on all the bad things that happen. When you turn on the news, do you ever see anything good? No, it's always some car chase, some bank robbery..some murder..

Teens are the target for The media. Everything you see from the media is usually associated with teenagers and are usually bad. This is really sad to me. The Media focuses on the the little society of delinquient teens. Not once do they ever take their time to do stories on the good things that us kids try to do for the community. Sure as hell, we do more good things than bad. All the bad shit that happens gets twisted and distorted into something much worse than it really is.. like Raves for example. Who are the people that mostly attend these parties? It's teenagers. That's why it's such a hot topic for the media. "What are our future Generations getting into?" It's this topic that attracts bloodsucking undercover reporters to the rave scene. The Media makes the public believe that ALL teens are up to NO good. And it's sad, that The Public believes EVERYTHING the Media has to say. The thing with the Media, is that it doesn't take it's time to look at both sides of the story. Like Angel said, they didn't bother to interview the Ravers, instead, they targeted the druggies and interviewed them, making the public believe that the majority of the people at raves do the "rave-drugs"

They have only scratched the surfaced, and they haven't learned the true meaning of a rave. Maybe the true meaning of a rave is subjective. But to me, a rave is a place where I can escape the harsh realities of world around me, and for just one night, appreciate the music.. the people around me and just kick back and relax.

A rave is not a violent place, or well.. it wasnt intended to be. Yes, people have been hurt at these parties, but people get hurt all the time. Like the incident at FX. ANYONE could've gotten hit by that car.. anytime.. anywhere. Does making FX an 18+ venue really make it a better place? That girl who got hit by that car could have been 30. What would they have done, if she really was 30? Make the venue 30+?

My point is, exploiting these events is not only disrespectful to the people who promote them.. but they piss off the kids who support these events by chipping from their own wallet just to get in.

RAVE DRUGS. That is such a cliche. It's just that E has been so exploited, that the media ignores all the other places that E is distributed. E can be done anywhere. You still get the same effects wether you're at home or at a party. Hell, you could be sittin in a ditch and the drug would have the same effect on you as it would anywhere else. A real party kid isn't gonna pay 25 bucks to get into a rave just to take drugs. They're gonna go to HAVE FUN. Again, another subjective issue, but this is just my opinion. I don't believe that fun includes drug usage.. but that can mean something else to another person. The thing with the media, is that they don't know this. They just think automatically that a rave is a filthy drug user infested place based off a few hidden camera videos.

The Media is such complete bullshit. It's sad that it can lure people in so easily. Making them believe everything they have to say before those people can experiece it first hand.

All I have to say is, Barbra Walters, YOU OLD, BITCHY, MEDIA SUPPORTING LEECH. *cough*

I disagree with that entire statement 100%.

I don't believe the media focus primarily on teenagers. I am completely obsessed with shows like Dateline, 20/20, 60 Minutes, Primetime, etc. and have been since I was younger and would watch 20/20 after TGIF.

Shows like that do reports on everything. Murderers, prostitution, drugs, gay rights, and yes, teenagers. But not all of them are about how horrible and evil teenagers are. I've seen many reports on teenagers who do charity work, are politicly geared, and such. Saying that all the media does is focus on negative things teenagers do is a bunch of shit.

They do, however, do reports on bad things teenagers do. Just not all the time. But why do they do them? Because that's what kids are out doing. If kids are out car surfing and dying, they're going to report it. Same thing with kids doing drugs, getting pregnant.. the list goes on. And it's because teenagers are stupid as hell.

I don't particuarly care for the way a lot of things are shown, but it's not the media's fault. They're being brutally honest and that's what pisses people off- the truth. It's like people have this mentality that what they're doing isn't illegal. Everytime you take a hit of e or drop acid, you're breaking the law. Even if you use it responsibly. Our country thrives off of negative things and gossip.

As far as FX being made 18+ because of the girl getting hit.. I couldn't say whether or not it would have been 18+ if the person who got hit was 30. But the fact of the matter is, the person was 14. She was on acid and leaving a club at 5 am. That doesn't look good. That's why there's negative focus on parties. And yeah, it sucks that the irresponsabilty of one person affects so many people. But I can understand why they made changed it. If one middle schooler is stupid enough to do that, you can bet your last dollar that there's about 10 more who are also. Most 30 year olds are smart enough to not run out into a busy intersection.

Maybe, what i was trying to say.. didn't come across clearly..
Let me clarify the message I was trying to send to you.

What I'm trying to say is.. All the things that teenagers do, are a good target for the media.. notice that a lot of tragic and horrible events that have happened were some how related to teens. Hence all the school shootings, gang related activities, suicide rates, rape rates.. etc.

True, the media isn't primarily targeting teens, but when it does focus on them it's almost usually focusing on the bad things that they do. If you watched the news straight for one month, and you counted how many times something bad has happened involving teenagers.. opposed to how many good things that have happened.. chances are the number of bad things will be MUCH MUCH bigger than the number of good things.

The media, in general.. focuses on bad things. It's rare to watch the news, and see something "heartwarming." The media focuses on bad stuff, cuz it's much much more appealing to the public eye. Would you rather watch a report on a loose serial killer or on a scientist who found a break through treatment for a terminal disease?

Just because there are more reports on the bad things that teenagers have done, doesn't mean that we do more bad things than good. The media makes it seem that way by airing and printing more stories that make the public look down on us.

"Our country thrives off of negative things and gossip." - Misha

See thats the sad thing. People complain and complain that it's always bad new.. printed on the newspaper.. aired on TV. (I'm one of those people) Why doesn't the media make it an extra effort to show the public that the majority of the things that go on in society are not bad?

That 30 year old would probably be dumb enuff to run into the road if he was on acid too. A 30 year old taking acid is just as stupid as a 14 year old taking it. It's true that teens are out there doing stupid shit like getting knocked up, taking drugs.. etc. I don't deny that they aren't, but it's the fact that Dateline went and did a report on the rave culture.. and didn't even focus on the rave that pissed me off. They focused on the drugs. I'm not saying that people don't do drugs at raves, but Dateline implied that that raves are just all about drugs. Which isn't true...If raves were just all about drugs, I wouldn't set foot into one. It'd be the same thing as setting foot into a crackhouse.. right? A lot of the people who go.. go for the music, and to have fun. Dateline didn't mention that in their report. Dateline did mention that it wasn't a safe enviroment. Is it really safe anywhere anymore? Hell, it's not safe at school anymore.. notice the 4 cops that waddle around the campus.

Just one snipit regarding the comment about Ecstasy being used in other situations aside from parties. Ecstasy is one drug that derives a lot of it's pleasureable effects from being a social drug, I've known people who rolled alone before, and they did not enjoy it, in fact it made them feel hyperemotional swinging from feeling happy, to lonely and depressed, now, it can be used among a group of friends in a house and probably derive even greater pleasure than it does at parties, but sitting in a gutter.. no :P

Isn't this what they EXPECT though; they were trying to make a point regarding the overuse of drugs at raves, and this only proves that they have succeeded. By writing 4 pages about their report and discussing how biased it was, you will only seem defensive. Of course they EXPECT you to deny that drugs are a big part of the scene; after all, you are a "raver." Rather than constantly defending raves, why not give them a message in a more subtle manner that lets them know that the music and atmosphere are important.

In the media, any publicity is good publicity.

Someone had an excellent idea(I can't remember who I heard this from), about writing letters to Dateline with an exception: NO MENTION OF DRUGS. If drugs aren't mentioned, Dateline is more likely to believe that their message was not loud and clear.

He gave an example that included a letter, stating that the music he heard in the background at the rave was interesting, and inquiring if Dateline knew who he could contact for more of this music since he liked it so much. Another option would be to write a letter, asking for more information about DanceSafe. But above all, he stressed that there should not be any mention of drugs, or the rave misinformation that Dateline portrayed.

Frankly, I think it's a fucking great idea.

I dont mean to sound like the party pooper or anything..But pretty much every thing they mentiond on that report is true..Some applies to more than others. But they were not lying...They should focus in on the positive things more than just the negative things but Dont deny tha fact that what they say is true

I know this may sound wierd, but I didn't see the report. However I was wondering if any one else noticed what the ravers were wearing. Because in 1994 Dateline did a similiar report on raves. And for starters 1. They sent a 16 year old in to the party
2. Whippits were still big in 1994
3. Raves ran about $5.00 or even free in 1994 as promoters used them mostly for drug promotions usually acid.
4."Drop and Roll" Productions existed in 1994
5. the report focused alot on XTC "a new drug" LSD and nitros.

So is this the same report?

I know these things because I was in Tempe the last tiem this report was ran, And I was in the scene there and remeber it being a big deal then.

It wouldn't be uncommon for Dateline to replay a report if there was much success with other shows and news papers such as USA TOdays frontpage article two weeks ago.

Anyway if anyone taped take a good look at the fashion and the pills. And get back to me It would be interseting to know.
