Without an enemy, Republicanism disinigrates. The harder people agree, the more they need to dig to find dissent to attack. Failing that, they need to skew the truth. It's just how it is. Since McKinnly, "peacetime Republicanism" has been an oxymoron. Just close your eyes and try to imagine a Republicanism that doesn't search endlessly for enemies, both foriegn and domestic.

The reason for this is pretty simple: Republicanism covers such a wide base. You've got hard-drinking welfare families in Alabama, farmers in Iowa, Ivy leugue market analysts and bluebloods all voting the same ticket. The only thing that serves all their interests is a national panick allowing the powers that be to skew resources in their favor via defense contracts and farm bills. In this model you have some people serving their own interests (bluebloods, farmers and middle class stock-holders) on the backs of dumbfucks who think the best way to stick it to traitors and the NAACP is voting (R).

In contrast, Democrats work on appeasement through programs. Every niche willing to pull the (D) lever gets its share of pork, which may or may not actually help that group. There have been some good studies done which show that "black leaders" often seek programs which offer no real benifit to black people, while disregarding programs and regulations/deregulations that would concretely advance black people financially. (Of course, everyone in power benifits from the status quo.)

Both parties spend a lot of pork. However, Rebpublican pork doesn't always give much back to its voting base, so they need enemies to whip their voters into a furor. "Yes, cut my welfare check!! Show it to those big city liberals who actually have high paying jobs!!! HAHAHA, take *that* NAACP!"*

*It's been shown that rural areas are much, much more destitute than cities. Spend some time in the rurals and that becomes pretty apparent. Not including the actual farmers, of course, who live pretty well thanks to Uncle Sam,Denny Hastert and of course, the big liberal cities who pay for it all.
