Has anyone else seen this movie?
I went and saw it yesterday, and was quite dissapointed since it was about religion and faith and all that bullshit, rather than flesh-eating aliens and crop circles.

boo.

Blah. I don't even want to see it. Mel Gibson hasn't made a good movie since Beyond Thunderdome.

but I was so, so, SO excited to see it.

It could have been a perfectly good movie if they hadn't ruined it with the religious undertones.
And there should have been more killing. :D

word to more killing. and more scenes w/ aliens, and they could've at least shown the fucking spaceships!! cheap bastards.
i was pretty disappointed, but after "unbreakable" i wasn't going to expect much from m. night shyamalan.

Another thing, the aliens in "signs" were pretty incompetent.
I mean, they wanted earth... but they were allergic to water. Earth is 70% water.
And why couldn't they do sinple things, like get out of the pantry?

tsk tsk tsk.

i'm sure if you were really into the whole alien/religious stuff this is a good movie for u. as for me way dissappointed, alot of build up and anticipation but no satisfaction. this movie was like real bad sex.

Reading these posts has made me feel like a wuss... that movie scared the crap outta me while I was watching it. I was with a friend in the theater and I clawed up his arms and screamed like a little kid. He got so scared, he grabbed his shoulder (too bad my face was in it) and scratched my cheek and made me bleed... so yeah... I thought it was freaky... didn't bother me afterward though. That's how you can tell if a movie is really scary... it freaks you out after you leave the theater.

Nimble*Syd
08-17-2002, 04:07 PM
Yes, it had the token scary "pop out" scenes. Unfortunetly, that doesn't make it any better.

well i dont't know if it hasn't been figured out yet, but the movie wasn't even supposed to really be about aliens. The alien parts were just a way to get the whole religious part across. Kinda spice it up a bit I guess. In my humble opinion, I loved the movie. And I think evreyone should see it.

I have just three words to say about that movie "SCARIEST MOVIE EVER" I still have the claw marks on my arm from the person sitting next to me in the theater, there was never a point in the entire film that left me feeling bored, the plot makes you think about the possibillty of hostile life out there and implants a question of "Are we alone?"

God, you guys are brutal. I thought it was an excellent movie. Very Hitchcock. The religious undertones didn't bother me at all (and I'm an athiest). Though it really doesn't have to be about religion at all, it could have been referring to fate (though I don't believe in that either, but that's beside the point). Shayamalan is definitely one of the best writers / directors out there. If he's got a new one coming out, I don't care who's in it or what it's about, I'm gonna see it.

eeewww..

i wanted to see this movie, untill i read this and figured out that the director also was behind unbreakable.

definately the worst movie ever. i was stuck on a ten hour flight and they delighted me with such movie gems as that and miss congeniality. it basically ruined the vacation.

Actually I laughed out loud when I saw that it was a real movie. I couldn't BELIEVE they'd make a movie about the crop circles. I wasn't interested at all. Glad at least *someone* liked it :)

I thought that this movie was horrible to the point that it was funny. It was very melodramatic..... and all of the acting was very halted... and i cant help but laugh at a movie where the whole underlining (but not hidden) motive is to praise god. *I know i will live through this alien invasion because god will see me through* blah

sorry balloon kitten, but willing suspension of disbelief only goes so far..the whole comic book thing was just downright silly. and how predictable an ending it had!
anyway, back to the topic at hand.

that's an insult to hitchcock. seriously.
the movie lacked real suspense (i was never 'hanging off the edge of my seat' as critics are so prone to assert) and shyamalan seemed to puss out of what could've been a decent ending. the aliens just up and left after mere days?? how convenient! and syd's onto something - why would aliens choose to even come near a planet that's predominantly aquatic when water is their achilles heel?
pfft. the more i think about it, the less i like that movie.

I couldnt agree more with this... you guys are a bunch of pussy whiners if you can't cope with a bit of spiritual undertones in a movie, for crying out loud... the movie was quite excellent (and I too have spent most of my life as an atheist and couldnt understand why anyone in their right mind would take offense to the spiritual references). Christ, grow up...

Heh, I agree that it was pretty creepy, both girls that i know that saw it were horrified by it. Oh and for once (FINALLY) joaquin phoenix didnt *completely* botch up his acting (god that ass has ruined so many otherwise great films)... My one major complaint with the film was how shyamalan cast himself in it with such a large role, he's not very good at acting anyways, and pretty much everything having to deal with his character was cheesy.

I thought the movie was fan-fucking-tabulous.

Here's why:

The focus of the invasion of earth focused on a single family rather than giving us the global perspective like movies such as independence day. The family's shock at the recent events were evident through Gibson's charater's denial, his brother's obsession with media coverage, and his children's facisination with ufo's. The movie's value lay not in dazzling special effects involving flying saucers and pitched battles between alien man. Its value was in the very human manner in which each character dealt with the situation. The brutal shock of the invasion disallowed panic. Such response has been seen in such events as the WTC disaster. Survivors of the incedent reported hundreds of people calmly walking down dozens of flights of stairs despite the fact that the building was falling apart

The aliens inability to effectively combat humans came from fighting on foreign soil. How would an alien know how to work one of our doors? On an alien world opening a door could very well involve pissing in a bucket for all we know. We probably couldn't operate their simple mechanisms and they ours.

I do, however, agree about the whole water thing. That was kinda dorky.

as everyone likes to point out, yes, shyamalan did unbreakable which most people didnt like.

however, he also did 6th sense, which i guess is pretty good. i didnt see it.

whatever.

i liked signs. i thought it was funny + creepy in parts. did fine by me.

The aliens should have been smaller.

Midget-like aliens would have made the movie that much better. Midgets make everything better.

foofy
08-18-2002, 06:21 PM
i really dont understand this supposed fascination everyone has with midgets. its as if someone somewhere told these people that midgets are supposed to be cool and everyone who goes wild about midgets has been playing the part ever since.

yes, they have a genetic fault that causes them to be very short. fucking hilarious.

i think this is a new pet peeve of mine now.

Religious undertones ruined it for some people??? None of you must be T.V. watchers. And heaven forbid some of us like a little more than explosions and nudity in our movies. I wouldn't put this movie in my top ten for the year, but man was it fuckin' hilarious in parts! Oh, and Joaquin Pheonix is the shit.

For me this movie was no better than The 6th Sense.
It was pretty scary for the first two thirds, then it completely cheesed out at the end.
This time, instead of helping ghosts find their way, Melly Gibbs found Jesus.
If you're gonna make a truly scary movie, keep it scary till the bitter end.
This whole "everything's OK now" shit M. Knight Shamalamadingdong keeps pulling completely ruins the overall vibe of his films.
When I leave a scary movie I wanna feel somewhat scared, not all warm and fuzzy because Mel Gibson decided to become a minister again.
This movie blew donkeys.

har har har. 'yer a witty one.
I came to this movie expecting to see scary aliens and spaceships, not some tear-jerking tale about Mel Gibson regaining his faith.
That's the bottom line.
