I am sooo mad!! :mad: If you haven't heard about this 72 year old lady in Newport Beach, CA who has smoked since she was like 17, and she sued the tabacco company and was just rewarded $28 million for damages... WHOA!! She said there was no warning stating that smoking could have ever caused damages to her health...

I would LOVE people's opinions on this... I guess I am just SUPER confused :confused:

I'm kind of mad at the state tax laws.. I know cigarette smokers are a major strain on the public health system, but shit, smokers are mostly poor people. Charging 5$+ a pack is only straining the trailer park persons budget. That money could be spent on ring dings and pork rinds to feed litle children breakfast. I say we give poor people cigarettes instead of food stamps and rental breaks.

But I still think the "common sense" case is outweighed by how cigs were marketed originally. They weren't marketed as a drug (or matter of health) or an addictive substance ~ more of an accessory to living & style. People didn't have 'nicfits,' they just lit up when they felt like it. Different times yo. I'm sure they didn't think smoking was *good* for them, but they also didn't know anything of nicotine or the other addictive substances intentionally put into cigs by the tobacco companies.

Umm yeah i was runnin on the treadmill the other day at the gym and i saw that antismoking commercial , the one with the flash images of what your lungs look like after smoking. Yeah i almost puked, I have to admit that i smoke a couple times a day , i want to quit really bad and have even thought about consulting hypnotism to quit. Obviously my will is not strong enough or i could just quit.

If you would have read my FIRST response, ya know the first response posted, you would've learned that when that lady started smoking, no body knew that the effects would be long time and serious!!! That's the same thing people have been telling you over and over agian.
On top of that, someone (might have been you) said that she should have quit smoking in the 80's. Have you ever smoked? As a second question in the series, have you ever tried to QUIT smoking? It's not as easy as it sounds. I've only been smoking for (almost) 8 years, since I was 12 :eek: Imagine smoking for like 30 years then trying to quit...

So think before you make random assumptions. This lady wasn't suing because she smokes, she was suing for the company compromising her health by not telling her the long term effects, suing because she wasn't told the adictivness, etc.

lady starts smoking at 17. The bad effects of cigs aren't known at that point. She continues smoking for years and years, getting deeper and deeper into addiction. People find out the bad side of smokes after this lady has been smoking for AGES. She tries to quit. She can't because she is addicted, she's become DEPENDANT. According to my grandpa, a retired drug enforcments agent for the US State Marshall, Tobacco is more addictive than COCAINE. It is THE most addictive "drug" out there. Are you still with me? The lady isn't suing because she NEVER saw any warnings. Shes suing because when she started there weren't any warnings, and had become addicted by a product that harms her, and had been harming her for years.

You can still get lung cancer loong after you quit smoking.... My grandpa quit ten years before he finally got lung cancer and died...

And anyways, the particular company she was suing got it so bad because they LIED about the effects, even AFTER research had shown that smoking was related to cancer. They insisted that all the research was bogus...
