Mr. Miyagi, what is your basis for saying that Oakenfold is "overrated"? Have you seen him live? Were you unimpressed with his show? Do you not like the type of music? Or is he simply too commercialized for you? I am assuming that you have some piece of information that would back up your claim, that the rest of us, just don't know about. Why else would someone who is so educated about the music, post a reply just to sarcastically congratulate a stranger for being excited about a DJ that they were excited to see. Please by all means, if you have information on a DJ that some new people to our scene, might not know, share. It's how people learn about their new found interest (or love). People do not enter the scene, all knowing, of all the DJ's. Try to remember that you too, were once new, and knew nothing of the musics' masters. Everyone has different tastes in genre, style, and DJ's. We all must RESPECT the fact that we are all individuals, and this is what sets us outside the rest of society. Where else can you get so many unique people from different ages, races, religions, and overall walks of life, in one location with virtually no violence? Remember we stand for something different.

I look forward to reading your answers to the above questions, please help me understand why you feel the way you do.

I think Paul Oakenfold is a talented DJ, but I think his "BIG-HEAD" is all most of us see anymore. Tranceport was good (but that was a Studio-Mix <made w/ computer>, which is why it was SO perfect (timing and track-selection was excellent).

I think the only thing that will make give Oakey his good-name back is for him to loosen his tie mmmkay. His head might fly off, but at least he won't be a total asshole (or at least that is what I have heard).

Paul Oakenfold is what I call a "showcase-dj" which is good for music artists, and record companies. His mixes are short, but well done (for the most part). Which isn't a bad thing, but for trance I really like to hear a mix longer than 5 seconds.

Good things about Oakey
Track-Selection, Beat-Matching skills.

Bad things about Oakey
Big Head (HUGE DJ EGO)
Mixes are Too short.

That is probably why he isn't the #1 DJ anymore and Tiesto is. Although I am much more a fan of Sasha.

<My 2 Fave DJs are>
Sasha < Track Selection, Tone-Matching, flawless mixing
John Digweed < Volume levels are always perfect, seemless mixes

Charlie Eon
>Give me Paul Oakenfold's records, and I will outperform him anyday<

Oaky worked very hard to get where he is today,
we may love to hate him now, but we all used to love him.
Also : George Acosta is the best TRANCE DJ.

Problem is, if you checked the Northgate Music Theatre webpage...it's not just Oakenfold...it's Oakie + Hernan Cattaneo. I don't know about you guys, but I have been waiting forever to see him. I loved the Perfecto Presents SA CD set.

Peace

Yeah I'm with you Bz . I've seen Oakey 3 times and could care less to see him again. He's blown my mind a few times and is passed his prime. If I do go it will be to see Hernan. His new Perfecto Presents South America CD has some amazing tracks on it. He also placed very high on this years top 100. John Digweed even has him for a resident at his monthly Bedrock night. That says alot right there. I don't think most people on this board even know who Hernan Cattaneo is though so I'll shut up now.

word...if anyone is turned off by Oakenfold like alot of us are by all means don't disregard this for him because Hernan is blowing up right now and he's got alot of style and alot of exlusive remixes he's gotten ahold of / worked on himself.

btw, I can't seem to find any solid info on this event...I'm guessing it's in another thread on this board under my nose but I can't find it right now..?

is definitely good, but definitely over-rated. PvD, Sasha, Tiesto are all better. why? cuz their music is higher quality. oakenfold doesn't focus so much on his music anymore it seems in his sets, it seems more to be about having a mainstream/pop flavor (words before music instead of other way around) to appeal to fans of rap/pop/rock, so that he can get radio play/ publicity, which means for oaky that he could potentially make TONS of cash.

it's all about the music? well, not like it used to be, at least for oakenfold

and we all know music is better than words, right? isn't that the point here?

btw i like short mixes cuz then none of the tracks length are cut out if they are good and you wanna enjoy it all. it makes the dj focus on the music more, and I like that.

i have never disagreed about an opinion more on the board than this one. short mixing sucks all the art out of the dj experience. isnt that what the dj is up there for? why not just play a bunch of tracks back to back? the ART of mixing is to find sounds that go well together, and to make (in my opinion) a new mini-track between two songs (the mix). this is the only reason that dj's deserve the $$$ they get. as ive said so many times, its not rocket science, but this is the one thing that dj's do deserve credit for when they are good at it (long mixes).

Having given it a lot of thought, I'm really sick of everybody bagging on Oakenfold. The last time I saw him play, he played solid tracks, he didn't wreck, he kept the energy level high, and the kidz absolutely loved him.
Once a dj has reached a certain level, what exactly do you expect them to do? Is the sky supposed to open up over the decks and have God hand down a new set of commandments to be delivered by Oakey AKA "the new Moses"? I mean, WTF? Let the guy play his shit, and let all the kidz who haven't seen him 14 times enjoy it. If he bores you, then don't go. I thought the new star wars movies were absolute shite, but I wasn't going to spoil it for my nephews.

Good points Guy.

I'm not in to Oakey's whole new "boy band" approach to music but I can honestly say from a guy who has seen him live 3x, the man can just simply throm a wicked set! Some of the best vibes I've ever been apart of have been nights Oakey has been behind the decks. Hell, he's the first show at Showbox I've ever experience the floor going up and down, felt like an earthquake in there.

Yes his Bunkka (commercial) tracks are shit, but he'll make your jaw drop from a trademark 2hr. set.

I was at the chems, and I know its a cliche- but it changed my life.

Ist time in a club for beats where the energy was just like the mosh pit, that night the beat changed for me from rawk to 4 to the floor and I never looked baack.

Of course I had been listening to house but that was the time I experienced it on the floor to that degree (and stone sober) Late bloomer- OK sorta

it was heaven and I was with my bud Kirby

Dj Kirby/ DJ Irenic that is

coool.

well put. I've seen him only once and had a great time, but now , I mean , I guess all artists mature into what keeps them inspired whether it's new genres, money, fame, etc....I'm not gonna hate. well, I can disagree with it for sure but I mean whatever people are in to, go for it. I mean if people are gonna pay 30,000 dollars to hear a remixed track w/ garth brooks and daft punk , someone will be willing to play it so......lol. But yeah, I will not be attending this show. But for those who are, I hope you have fun.

you know, you're right "itsallaboutthemusic". mixing is the most important part of DJing. I would LOVE to hear a DJ perfectly mix together nelly with britney spears, then mix that with some nsync. what a great DJ!! it's all about the music? no no no, it's really all about the MIXING. that's why the best DJ's in the world are the best mixers! music is so EASY!! you're right.

I know this thread is dead, but here is my two cents...

I've seen Oakey 3 times, at Area One, a club and as part of the triple crown tour (fucking awesome: Sasha & Digweed, Oakey and Chemical Brothers in one night! 6 hours of a good time! Something like 25,000 people there)

I can honeslty say I am not too impressed with his mixing skills. His mixes are short, and do not keep the flow going. Kinda sucks to be in touch with God only to have your spirits crushed when an abrupt mix is made. Yeah, sometimes those rock, but not every song.

I'm not retarded..A reason for people starting to dislike Oakey is that dance music is evolving. People are getting tired of trance anthems and the scene is shifting to reflect that.....Oakey built himself on anthems (read: Tranceport).

This is my opinion, so don't berate me if you disagree.....
