then do what i did, practice on other people's gear until you save up enough for all of your own gear...

the dj starter kits are a joke and are marketed towards people who don't know anything about gear and just want something to play on...

some of the better starter kits can be ok though, cuz how does this kid actually know that he wants to pursue mixing? he might just want to try the waters.. and saving up like 2000 bux for the top of the line technics and pioneer mixer might prove to be a waste of time and money. but then again, im sure SkyCries has more experience than i do on this shit, i just started awhile ago.

If you're looking for total packages w/1200's they have 'em in prosound and audio, and also in all the UK dance magazines.

cuz how does this kid actually know that he wants to pursue mixing? he might just want to try the waters

and thats why its a good idea to play around on other people's gear(preferably 1200's) until you can save up to get your own gear...

Any of those dj starter kits you will outgrow in a matter of months and often times won't be able to sell them off because no one will want to buy them used...

play around on someone elses gear and find out what you like and if its really for you first...

i second the suggestion to wait for real gear. make friends with someone that owns the stuff and just chill, learn to beat match etc and save up for yr own set up. those starter kits are WACK, you'll spend a chunk of change you could've used for real shit and then when you try to resell, you'll lose almost all the money you put in, because the equipment is crap. not to mention that it is far easier to learn how to mix on 1200s than anything else. they maintain speed, pitch lock correctly, and won't just jerk to a stop when you try to manipulate the platter.

save up. if yr really into it, you should be able to wait for the reals... don't just rush in and get crap... its nothin' but a marketing ploy to all the wannabes.

Ive got a starter set for 175. It was 300 new
If your serious about becoming a DJ i suggest you take everyone's advise and save up for some 1200's. However if your not sure, it would be a wast to spend $1600+ and have to sell it for a thousand because you realized that DJing wasnt for you. If you buy this set and decide you dont want to spend the majority of your time in your bedroom practicing or blowing your pay checks on records, you could sell it for about what you paid for it. If you like DJing, you still sell it to someone starting out and get some cash back! This set was hardly used. I could throw in some records to get you stated.

got two 1200s, numark (crap) mixer, extra pair of ortofons, and sony MDRv600 headphones for $750 off of a kid that was obviously clueless in san fransisco almost 5 years ago. 1200s are still awesome with no problems, turned the mixer into a paperweight, got me a Rane mixer and the headphones are still champion. just randomly ran into the kid on Haight street, thought everything must be hot, but he had reciepts. weird, but extraordinarily lucky.

If you have a job, there's another alternative... Go to a place like Guitar Center / Sam Ash and apply for one of their credit cards/financing packages. I bought my whole dj system and worked it off during a six month period. They usually don't charge you interest for 6 months to a year. Get yourself some 1200s. Even if you decide you don't want to DJ, they sell very well on the used market. The solution is definitely not for everyone, but I just thought I would throw my $0.02.

ugh, it always has to be about status, huh? shoot....let the boy learn on some cheaper decks if he wants. As long as they are direct drive and not belt, then i dont see what the problem is with him using them as starter/practice decks. True...no DJ's will ever spin a party on a pair of Gemini's, but shit, as long as they hold a consistent speed, and the speed/pitch can be adjusted, then thats really all ya need to practice.

Damn, I live in tri-cities, and am only in contact with one person that has 1200's (yes, yes, i know there are more people around) Maybe this guy that is asking for our help is in a similar situation. Maybe he lives out in the middle of nowhere and cant access someone elses gear very easily. Also...alot of people are protective over their 1200's and dont let just anybody and their friends play with their gear.

I think that....rather than flame this guy...why dont you all just try to be humble and recommend some started decks for him to begin with. Damn...everyone talks about Technics 1200's, Technics 1200's. Well hmm....ive seen mixmaster mike spin, and go figure...the guy plays on VESTAX tables. and ya cant even tell the difference. I sure dont see anyone doggin him.

Thats just my piece of mind. I hope that some of you will see my side and maybe even change your rude opinions.

what does having 1200's at home have to do with status? My point was those are the best and easier to learn on and you will sell starter kits after a couple months of use and often times lose large amounts of $$ on them so you might as well save up for 1200's??

And yes mixmaster mike has and probly does use vestax tables cause of a sponsorship and you know what? the vestax tables he uses cost MORE then 1200's !!

Well hey...I mix MP3s on a computer setup. 2 sound cards in it, and a software interface that is similar to CD mixers. I still use a regular DJ mixer/EQ though. So you wanna flame me too? For wanting to do something different?

himmmm...i don't think dave or anyone else is flaming lowdown for wanting to get anything less. their just suggesting that he get 1200's off the bat!! it'll deffinately save him money in the long run if he really gets serious about it! it's a quality thing the 1200's have almost always been the stongest and toughest decks you can get.

i started out getting one of those lame starter packages. only cause i really needed to get tables and had no way i could get to any of my friends house as much as i woulda wanted to practice. and now i'm starting to get booked more and you can deffianetly tell in my sets that i'm not used to 1200's as well as i should be. images/smilies/tongue.gif

shit and now i'm pretty much gonna go into hiding for a bit just so i can save up to get two 1200's and a vestex pdx-d3.

in the end he should and can get whatever he wants..it's his money and he knows if he really wants to dj or not!! we're all just suggesting that he save and get top of the line gear so he doesn't regret getting lesser gear like so many have before.

=)mischief(=

yeah and mmm uses vestex probably not just cause of sponsorships but because them are some powerful weapons for tuntablist! with that +/-50 pitch bend, and reverse switch!! but they are a bit more spendy then 1200's at $600+

you wanna copy my style?? go to kinko's!!
