I was just wondering who the techno fans out there are??? It seems like alot of people on this board are into trance, and I know alot of people into house and jungle. Techno people are harder to come by.
So, yeah, if you like techno, let me know.
I'm obsessed with it, so, I just wanted to find the crazies that share my interest.

most of my experience is with the acid techno that comes out of london. i love that stuff. but stateside, it gets labeled as acid or hard trance so i'm not really sure if that counts. images/smilies/smile.gif
i'm getting more acquainted with techno from the groovetech archives. i think there are 2 frankie bones sets in there (one from molecule on dec. 4th, one from his studio set there earlier that day) that are pretty cool.
and then of course, i really enjoyed seeing richie hawtin, and masa did a great set that evening, too.
the more i listen, the more i like it. it seems to be generating an intolerance for epic progressive trance in me, though. images/smilies/smile.gif

[-o-] I am with you on the techno tip [-o-]
when I started spinning...techno was the dominant genre I played with....jacky, minimal, detroity at first..stuff like hyperactive, angel alanis, woody mcbride, rob hood, plastikman, speedy j, abstract beating systems, damon wild, jeff mills......and then I discovered the swedish, english and scandanavian sound...cari lekebusch, adam beyer, ectomorph, le car, christian vogel, dave angel, marco carola, neil landstrumm....and all I can say is my collection is yum
but not yummy enough...always looking for fresh innovative sounds

??? Wasn't there just techno 1st, and then all the other forms came to be... such as: breakbeat, trance, trip-hop, acid-jazz,house,etc... I always thought they were all techno in general? Could someone shine some light on that?? And if there is just "techno", what or how is it comprised? I thought techno is like what came out in the late 80's and early 90's (like "rave" music)joe

Hmm... I am not the expert, but
I believe that House came from Disco... and developed a little bit before techno started.
Techno started in Detroit, after house was already going... as a faster, much more emotionless form of music (at least that's what I remember somebody telling me).
The electronic music evolution story is very intresting... especially when you look at where jungle, and HHC came from... because you have to go back SOOOOO many steps.
I don't personally remember the whole deal, but I've heard the story (at least one or two people's version of it) more than once.

House did indeed develop from disco. It was a very raw, basic sound with vocals and pianos: the Chicago house sound.
In Detroit, people were more into Kraftwerk, Parliament and Funkadelic. That's what formed the basis of the detroit sound which later evolved into techno.
I'm not too familiar with the evolution of the concept "techno" in the US, but in Europe, techno has always been considered a separate style. It was House that was used to describe all forms of music that had a four-to-the-floor beat.

In response to Elroy's statement about techno as "emotionless"--
I think (from my knowledge) that Detroit-style techno was actually a response to the frustrations of urban life in Detroit. It's hardly an unemotional form of music to my ears. It's about finding something to be passionate about that uplifts you above the rhythms of everyday life--music!
Elroy
03-02-2000, 03:52 PM
Well obviously it does something for us, or we wouldn't enjoy it as a music.
I guess maybe I should have said it "Non-human"?
To elaborate on what i mean by that, techno has such driving, electronic sounds, it is hard to associate it as something humans have made. Unlike hand drumming, or guitar playing, which have much more of that human side to them.
Maybe... non-organic... or purely-synthetic.
That is closer to what I mean I think.

Ok, seems like a good time to ask. I've pretty much figured out a majority of the trillion different sub-genres of electronic music in the short time I've become a beatfreak. I considered techno as an umbrella term for electronica, and obvuosly I was wrong. Only thing I really know is it originated or is more well know for it in Detroit, I think! Could someone maybe break it down more for me: structure, time, different sub types, etc? Maybe a web site?
Thanks, I appreciate it!

Techno sounds like house, but it is more repetitive, there are more weird sounds and effects and the structure is usually different: no real melody or anthem, no epic climaxes. A lot of DJ's play techno related tracks around here, but there are very few that spin techno-only.
Techno is a feeling, that is the best way for me to describe it. Listening is the best way to get acquainted with that feeling.

a friend once told me something about the birth of the music...(Now I only remember bits of it) Techno like originated in Detroit... From there, DJ's in new york took what detroit created, and ny changed it, from there, britian followed ny, and added their sense to the music, and then it came back to the states once more where like every city;their DJ's more of the less continued revamping what others had done, and how peepz in their individual areas responded to it... Hence, different areas of the country we have unique scenes...some based on house, jungle,etc... If this is somewhat right, please lemme know... joe

I like techno...it haven't developed into a love yet, I think because of a lack of exposure. There are so few techno parties or parties with techno rooms on the island and in Van too.
I don't want to end up like so many techno-lovers who seem to be irritated by other music. One thing I really value is my ability to love almost all kinds of electronic music...provided that they are in context. I don't want to lose that.

*ditto for me*
Although i don't like it so much on the minimal tip as i do like it hard as fuck and banging -- kind of like Masa's set at Paradox. That was delish.
Oh and i did dig the majority of Richie Hawtin's set both of the times i've seen him. Need more... =)

"I don't want to end up like so many techno-lovers who seem to be irritated by other music."
I'm not in favor of any kind of purism, but after 10 years of listening to all kinds of electronic music, I've slowly developed an intolerance for the more popular forms. There are just some things I can't appreciate anymore, like epic trance, booty house and two-step dnb.

it's in German, but hopefully the names will speak for themselves.

When I first started buying records, I only bought the most evil and dark techno I could find, and I love those records dearly.
But I recently got some Detroit techno records from 89-90 and I am in love. They have alot more groove than most of the techno I listen to nowadays. I find that most of the records I listen to are really repetitive, and while I understand that techno mixing is all about layering, etc., I have very little DJ skills thus far, and I want tracks that have some variety. I guess there's just nothing better than the original. Some old skool courtesy of Derrick May, Jaun Atkins, Jeff Mills... what more could you ask for??
I also agree that listening to techno has made me more selective. I really can't stand prog/epic trance and basically anything that's repetitive. I like house, but I find that I just crave techno.
And it's also true that there isn't enough techno around here. Roman spins some kickass techno, but really, there are a lack of major techno locals.
I think that techno is probably a more sophisticated taste.
But it's all good to me.

I've heard Roman spin a couple of times and I don't consider him a techno dj, he plays more of a mix between techno and tribal house.
I love dark stuff but I'm also getting more into the dirty raw detroit sound.

if so many people like techno, why are promoters so damn afraid of booking techno artists in this town?
im talking about clubs and raves. Mcphilly and system 6 cant be the only mo fo's out there that book techno.
Sounds to me that techno is gaining popularity, which is great, but I really would like to see people book more good techno artists.
