Flaming? Against the Rules? Why not?

I originally posted this in OT under Kim's question about deleting that forum, but I feel it needed it's own thread.

Here's a crazy idea....

Why not ban flaming? Who needs all this crap about insulting others.
I certainly don't need to get me rocks off bashing peoples heads in for being dumb, why not leave the criticizing to the moderators who could gently suggest someone stop being an idiot.

This was in response to a gentle little joke (no swearing or insults) that I made. Now I don't need anyone's approval, nor do I value his opinion, but his post is indicative of so many people on NWTekno. Why are we allowed to write posts that directly insult, aggravate and demean other members?

Why can't the people here grow up and just be reasonable? Post your opinion about _the topic_ not the previous poster.

Personally, I feel that there is no way ANYONE could or should control peoples minds. Everyone is different. Some people are "cool." Some people are "immature assholes." Some people call "immature assholes" "funny and witty!" It's opinion, and varies per person.

Although I also don't appreciate "immature assholes" either, I don't think that banning them or making naughty words & phrases illegal would really accomplish anything besides apply one persons opinion to the whole.

There are already suggestions to "think before you post" and I think the VOLUNTEER mods do do a good job of locking threads that have lost control to the monkeys.

And I don't see how that would elliminate the problem of people crying censorship & facsism on the Moderators part with the exception that if there was no unkind language allowed, they would be right.

Did you have an idea on how it would?

P.S. I remember that thread with Sondr. I think that was his way of telling you he doesn't appreciate what your mind has to say ;) Instead of focusing on the manner that he told you in (after several of your posts to him) why not just respect that he doesn't want to chat? Seems like the end to your problem. *shrug*

for example, people have asked me why i was flaming them when from my perspective i was just stating the factual information i had about a subject... and had no intention of coming off as mean.

If you had any appreciation for how much idiocy there really is, you wouldn't be making such an outrageous suggestion. The Mods already have enough crap to deal with around here than to start scanning the forums looking for morons to privately PM with a request to "smarten up."

I'm with Effendi. (As usual, I guess. :D) If someone said something stupid in real life, you would laugh at them. And there is never going to be any law passed, much less enforced, that will make people play nicely. Kim also makes a good point: I, too, have been accused of flaming people when I didn't even think I was doing so. Banning "flames" would be entirely too subjective, and would stiffle a great deal of expression around here.

Besides, flame wars are already against the rules. You may have noticed that several threads have been locked for denegrating into nothing more than back-and-forth flaming. When the topic is lost, the thread is locked. There is already a system in place for this.

And how boring would OT be with idiocy left to flourish without at least a smartass remark in the defense of intelligent thought?

I've belonged to many message boards where flaming is not all appreciated or tolerated and they run fine. Censorship or no, an electronic means of communication provided for free in the interests of building a better Northwest electronic music scene is being used as a conduit of hate and negativity.

If NWTekno has shown me anything that it does it's first effect is to foster an overly dramatic, negative vibe here in the northwest.
I understand now why Kim posts that she is depressed to see the board in the state it is today...it's not a community, it's a savage no man's land where assholes can run about and terrorize the populace.

I guess intelligent conversation can happen on the board. Hell must have finally frozen over.

No it's not. There are 9,410 registered users and probably 10 that "flame" regularly. This site is being used for the exchange of information.

I don't understand how you can feel that way but not do anything proactively yourself. Why do you let people bother you? Just don't talk to them! It's easy! ESPECIALLY with the ignore feature. You complain that everyone is mean and disrespectful, but then reply to Scott's rhetorical questions (that obviously upset you) instead of the legitimate questions regarding your "proposition." That makes me think you just want to bitch, and don't really care anyways.

If you don't like what people are saying, ignore them as you would in real life.

I'm honest.

Although sometimes too honest.

I would rather see someone posting a witty and insightful flame than replying to a post with a "WERD, DUDE!" or some other pointless and uninspiring monotony. I think a good flame is worth at least 10 other boring posts with no point.

And didn't Corinna reffer you to NWTekno? If so, it surprises me that you would take such a stand against flaming.

And I do. However, you ask me to be proactive and the only thing I can do as a user is open up a discussion on the subject. The only way I can make change is to convince those with power that change would be a good thing. I do not live or die by NWTekno, that does not mean that I do not want it to change for the better. My concern and my feelings about flaming are certainly not the end-all of my existence.
